'blk 'I' Mr. Burham The worth of a teacher is measured in many ways--by his abilities as a lecturer, his scholar- ship, his service to school and students, the respect of his co11eagues.By all these standards Robert L, Burham is a good teacher. Mr. Burham, professor and head of the chemistry department, director of evening division and summer session, came to Grand View College in 1955. In the years since, he has accepted many responsibilities and given many hours to the school. He also has advanced professionally with post-graduate studies. He is liked and respected by both students and faculty members, In recognition of his scholarship and service to the school, we, the staff of the 1966 Viking, dedicate our book to Mr. Burham. To believe, love, worship and obey God are the most fulfilling, worthwhile, rewarding goals a person can attain Organizations ' I3 Sports - 37 F 2 H Student Life - 53 Advertising - 99 Faculty - 6I Students - 7I 7 A yearbook tells the story of its school. It is supposed to represent the people of the institution, the buildings, and all the abstract things that go to completing the school such as spirit, tradition, and customs. It must be remembered by the reader that the following pages are simply a representation of the aforementioned aspects. During the production of this yearbook we, the staff, have had to use our own judgment accordingto time and alloted space as to what should or should not be included. We undoubtedly have broken some cherished traditions and included some things felt unnecessa.ry by many people. However, the book must stand as it is. It is the story of Grand View College for 1965-66, and it is a book of memories for many years to come. The Viking staff for 1965-66 presents the yearbook we produced. Its worth lies, in the people who read it, those close to the college and who are concerned with its life. G.V.C. The entire student body of Grand View comprises the powerful youth of our school and are represented on a governmental body called the U,K, Council. The U,K, does not merely represent the extracurricular or social activities of our school but the true SPIRIT of it. If U.K, functions well, Grand View as a whole functions well. The social activities of the college are as important to the educational process as are the classroom activities. With as diversified and large a student body as ours has rapidly become, the problems of pro- viding a unified and pleasurable social life become greater. I believe that the U.K, Council and the student body as a whole have met this challenge quite successfully with their hard work, enthusiasm, and spirit. I wish to thank all those of you who have cooperated by your participation to make this year successful. qw, Mags, Llnge Kraefter The U.K, is one of the most active organizations on campus. It is an organization of elected stu- dent representatives and faculty advisers. The U,K. has committees organizing formal dances, weekend activities, and publicizing these events. The organization also promotes a better faculty-student relation- ship and inter-student body relationship. This committee of dedicated students and faculty is working to make Grand View a better well rounded institution. OFFICERS--Jane Hagen, President, Jerry Crab, Vice-president. The year began with the select- ing of an editor. Unge Kraefter chose Doran Morford as editor and he began choosing a staff. Rod Orr became the assistant editor, Ron Bayles became photography editor, and Dave Getman and Denny Cook became the advertising editors. Chris McFar1in, Marcia Loewenau, and Paula Martins joined the staff as layout and copy personnel. As the year went on, so did the VIKING staff. They gathered information, scheduled pictures, took pictures, planned pages and even took a couple airplane rides to get the aerial photo- graphs seen throughout the yearbook. Toward the deadline things began to fall into place and the yearbook was again finished. Now the VIKING staff may rest assured knowing that it has just put out another yearbook .that is well done. fi' 4 Q .V .x-. F ,Q .-. e' SNS -N5 v. wx r X, .ix bis x. Bill McE1ree, who has since been outstanding in other GVC games, led all scorers with 29 points. In the Viking's second encounter of the season they struck again. This time they trounced Muscatine 101-80. Duane Palcic, former all-stater from Woodward - Granger, led the attack with 24 points. Ron Fillman and Bill McE1ree each collected 19. Waldorf was next on GVC's list. Although Waldorf claimed the leading scorer, Grand View seemed to be more balanced in this line. The Vikings won, 109-106, on a last minute rally. McE1ree again led the team with 32 points. The Vikings suffered their first loss in five games when they met Creston. Even with Bill McE1ree's 44- point effort, the Vikings fell, 94-93. Steve Mi1ton's late basket gave Creston the winning margin. 39 Duane Palcic took the spot-light with a 33 point evening as Grand View flew past Marshalltown, 87-82 in overtime. McElree added 24 points, No. l-ranked Burlington put on a great exhibition of basketball in its win over Grand View, 100-86. Despite Bill McElree's 35 point effort, the Vikings cou1dn't cope with Burlington's Sam Williams. No. 12-ranked Ellsworth fell to the hands of Grand View in an 80-'79 contest. Bill McElree's free- throw with 10 seconds to go gave the Vikings the winning margin. Grand View exhibited 43'Z, shooting and skyrocketed toa 96-'77 victory over Centerville. Roger Owens, playing his second game since starting in late December, pumped in 23 points. McE1ree once again took scoring honors with 31 points. Our own day is also characterized by fundamental changes in practically every area of life, including education. Sometimes it is extremely helpful to turn to the primary sources of those who have left their marks upon our civilization, lest we tend to despair and forget the legitimate role of the light of reason. Normally, we think of Calvin as a theologian, but he gave considerable attention to education. I suggest that you ponder upon the question which he asks: Shall we deny the light of truth to the ancient lawyers, who have delivered such just principles of civil order and polity? Shall we say that the philosophers were blind in their exquisite contemplation and in their scientific description of nature? Shall we say that those, who by the art of logic have taught us to speak in a manner consistent with reason, were destitute .of understanding themselves? What shall we say of all the mathematics? Shall we esteem any thing laudable or excellent, which we do not recognize as proceeding from God? He is asking the right questions, which, Mahatma Gandhi observed, are the conditions underlying any meaningful dialogue. Rather than tell you Calvin's answer, seek your own first. God speed you.
