' W- Q 71 ij cz message fam the college president The presentation of world problems has received more than usual emphasis during this academic year. The idea to stress important international problems of today in the convocations and Alumni Lectures during l959-60 took shape last August while attending a church convention in Detroit, Michigan. It is my confident opinion that there is value to be attached to attending lectures where opportunity is given to have the problems which the world faces defined by men or women who are competent to discuss the issues. And the meaning to us as informed and intelligent individuals is that ' l' tren th of the Christian college may continue we cannot escape a response. Ihope that the pecu lar s g to lie in its capacity to motivate the ablest young men and women to dedicate their lives and serv- ices to those causes which aim to meet the needs of man wherever they are known to exist. gdfiruvf 2 22414 PETER JORGENSEN HELVINE MAILAND Dean and Registrar SIV JOHNSON Language ROBERT F. We've had coffee and now we takea few moments to rest from the turnult of our college day as we turn our thoughts to God. ln Old Main lounge we meet to find inspira- tion, faith, and fellowship. These fifteen minutes each evening have become a treas- ured part of our Grand View life. 'Blessed Be The Tle That Bmds semznapf Grand View was established in i896 with a dual purpose: that young men and women might be educated for life in the context of the Christian faith and to pre- pare men for the ministry of the church. For 64 school years these two purposes have been served together and two communities, that of the college and that of the seminary, have lived together as one ln l952, the two schools were formally separated but they continued to share common quarters and the same board of directors. This year this immediate relationship ends. Grand View Sem i nary will reopen this fall at Maywood, I I I i no i s , in affiliation with Chicago Lutheran Theological Seminary. The influence of the College and Seminary upon each other cannot be evaluated here, but it is certain that it has been profound. The proportionate sizes of the two schools has changed during the past few years but the definition of an institution, as that of a person, is rooted in its past and the deposit of almosta lifetime will continue in part to define Grand View. ln the thinking of those ultimately responsible for the continued lives of both schools, their purposes and goals will continue to be closely linked. In sentiment and thought they can never be completely separated. Leave-taking will not be easy for the individuals in- volved. Although we are enriched by the past, life is not served by clinging to it. For the last time these pages are included in a VIKING--we bid farewell with a thanks and with the prayer that both schools may continue to serve man and give glory to God. Dean Axel C. I've found that the girls are in their most 1 state when I make my rounds at midnight. For instance, one Friday night, as Iwent up to second floor, known natura , as the quiet quarters, I saw a pink glow coming from the corner room. I peeked in and found Janice D. stretched out on her bed, in a hypnotic state, while Joy I. was psychoanalyzing her to find what impulse had made her sign them up as co-editors of the Viking, I was jolted out of this relaxing atmosphere by the unmistakable strains of My Fair Lady. Upon entering the noisy room, Ifound Berit W. serenading, in rapid Oslo-English, her picture of dimpled S t with Wh can't a woman be more like a man? while Leota L. with a quick glance in my direction, turned wee y y p p down the volume on her stereo. As I approached the next door, I saw clouds of dust floating out. Elaine S. was deftly brushing the dust and dirt off Esther C. 's clothing after one of her evenings of office cleaning. In the next room, Karen ' d l B.' was combing her short blonde curls and bemoaning the fact that Ames is so far away. Sylvia D. trie to conso e her by saying that she would have been glad to take her if brother Ivan's taxi were still here. I heard a scream from across the hall, and found Alice O. frantically looking under the bed, in herwardrobe, and behind the furniture for the missing picture of her Mister. Kathy M. , tickled by her roommate's frustration, suggested adding a Kookie'AComb to her reward list. A monologue could be heard from across the hall, where Judy O. was chatterin in.her' usual fashion, to her roommate LouAnn R., who seemed to be wondering which boy was going to ask S her to the next dance. The next room has beensilent all year. First semester, Connie E. lived there but she was always visiting on third. Now only the weaving looms stand there in the dark. No trouble here, so I moved on. Wanda T. was ' ' ' ' ' 1 'd h I i ked sitting on the floor of her room, eating saltwhrch she loves so dearly. Despite Lola A. sattempt to ll e t em, p c up the four empty salt shakers from the dresser and shook my head as I walked out. There was a loud conversation oin on in the next room where Jeanetta C and Mary Io F. were comparing notes on the many telephone calls they 8 8 1 - had received 'that evening. From Emme U. 's room came the dramatic tones of the recitation of The Raven. I decided not to disturb her thoughts. I found Diane B. alone in her room pining over the loss of Casey, and brushing peroxide through her bangs. Bonnee L. was alone too, diligently studying for her second semester's straight A's.r 78 I drew a deep breath, for I knew what was coming next. As I neared third, appropriately known as the roar floor, I heard squeals and pounding, and saw Liz J. tear madly out of her room, croaking Help! Bertha I. was right behind her menacingly holding a glass of water in her hand. However, when they saw me, they tried to resume the dignity of dorm president and representative. In the next room, which was pitch black, Fran S. and Marilyn O., who were crouched on the floor, turned on the flashlights under their chins, apparently trying to scare me with the shadowy faces. They succeeded, and I left, shakily. Across the hall, Ifound a serious Sally D. reading the joke book Have You Heard This one? Since Judy K. wasn't there to explain the jokes, and Sally didn't seem to catch on to them I spent a few minutes explaining them to her, and her peals of laughter followed me down the hall. Lois K. was practising the cha -cha, while her roommate Kayo H. dreamed fondly of her Gus, the Goose. flf Alice is still looking, her picture of Dan is in this room.J I heard a loud squeal of protest from the next room, where Neta I. Had put her legs into her sewn up pajamas and Eina Lee D. was lauhingly brushing the cracker crumbs from her bed. Next door, Shag M. was wearing one of her twenty- three pairs of pajamas and playing her uke for Ginger O., who was trying to listen to the slightly warped record of Songs of the Sea. Kathy I., who is a science student, was trying to study Western Civilization, but found it slightly difficult since the book was upside down. Her roommate, Judy S. , was unconcernedly sleeping and probably dreaming of linen bags, In the next room, Barb C. was laughing hysterically over her brother's latest letter, and translating the catchy California words like Snarf to Deanna J. who was using them in letters to Larry. Across the hall, Linda S. was typing folk-dancing programs while still patiently waiting for Betty P. to remove the bobcat rug from the middle of the floor. Back across the hall, I found Solveig P. and La Vonne T. dancing madly, Askov fashion, to the newest Elvis Presley record. At the end of the hall, and the end of the midnight round, I discovered a battle being waged between Diane C. and Jean S. and their neighbors Soni P. and Phyllis H. over Ambrose, the dorm cat. They had lost their previous mascot, Jeremiah Tiddlywink. I stopped the battle by taking the cat and the salt shakers downstairs where l could at last relax in peace and quiet. Ah, welll Such is the life of a dorm housemother. 79 bmw, dormitogf ZW The time is 12:30 A. M. Mr. Graham, boys' dormitory proctor, is enacting his nocturnal dorm inspection. All the boys have returned to the buildingg the girls' dormitory is locked. Mr. Graham first visits the second floor suites. Behind the first door he finds Jim C. sleeping soundly after atrying day of classes. Sleep has also fallen upon Andy N. , who is happily dreaming of his own Kathrine the Great. Moving on, Mr. Graham comes upon all sorts of interesting situations, Dick P. is busily putting the finishing touches on one of his original paintings. Near by, Phil B. sits on the floor beside his bar-bell and works with his slip stick qSlide rulej. There is a peculiar chomping noise coming from John L. 's room. Of course! A new shipment of apples has just arrived from home. John's roommate, Dan M. , ignores thechomping by conjugating his favorite German verbs. Down the hall, Grand View's Napoleon, Wayne F. , is throwing a card party. The sweet aroma ofcoffee seems to becoming from his room. Sherlock Graham Holmes kneels to peek through the key hole. Why it's Wimpy J. playing cards with Wayne! Mr. Graham resists the temptation tojoin their seminar and continues on his way. Soon he comes upon Roger F. , who is exhausted after having lifted weights at the Y. M. C. A. all day long. Roger is on his way to dreamland, but not Dave E.! He is seriously meditating on the respiration of the Platyhelminthes. Stealthily, Mr. Graham ascends the creaking stairs to third floor, hoping to find Tom B. among the third- floorers. Ah! Mr. Graham pauses with a new refreshed feeling. No, it's not coke time, but organ music! Yes, and it is coming from Lynn N. 's room. Here also is the lost Tom B. Further down the hall, Ted K. appears to be studying--this is the first time he has had to himself all day, but ah, love! Calculus seems to be dominating John J. 's thoughts, so Mr. Graham continues. Suddenly he hears strange sounding names from far away places. Yes, it is Bruce H. reading the letters from his harem. Gordon L.' is working problems on his slide rule, while his friend Edward S. tests his theory on the benefits of eight hours of sleep per day. for shall we say per nightj. Don J. and Kam S. are in ecstasv listening to the flying experiences of Ken N. David F. is muttering a Bostonian sleep-talk! Near by Donald W. indulges himself in a study of Hatha Yoga. Mr. Graham sallies forth to three and a half. There he sees Vern J. serenely sitting in heaps of newspaper clippings telling of his engagement. Erling P. is discussing his new transmission with Glen O. , Rebel qLarry C.J and Eric K. ln the background, Mr. Graham's organ music has given away to the- sound of the beating of the skins fbongo drumsj by Bruce M. Above the beating Bill J. can be heard talking about the last basketball game to his roommate Ralph J. , who strangely answers by repeating different girl's names. V if? - . After saying goodnight to Tom W. , who is polishing his car bumpers in his room, Mr. Graham continues to the east wing of third floor. What's this? Karl S. is listening to Radio Moscow on his short-wave radio. A new announcement has just been made! Khrushchev has just invited General Motors to open a plant next to the Kremlin! ! ! In the next room, oblivious of the exitement, Erling D. contentedly sings himself to sleep. Bur Richard S. is not sleeping! He is studying his favorite subject, German. Mr. Graham bids him to Heil Hitler and continues on his tour in a new goose step. Suddenly a vociferous sounding song is heard coming from the end of the hall. lt is a grand California stag party The ecstatic participants are Alan F. , Melvin H. , Gene G. and Frode J. Rock! Rock! Rockaround the Proctor. Rock! ! l Across the hall, Lenny F. quietly counts extra pillow-cases over and over and over again. Johnny S. is carefully polishing his shoes, he is unaware that near by the future president of the United States, Keith D. , is rehearsing a political speech to Dennis R. CRASH! World War lII??? No, it is merely Henry J. 's rebuilt radio blowing up a little. What a relief! Once more, Mr. Graham resumes his way pausing to comfort John D. , who is expecting a telephone call, but Dave F. seems to have monopolized the telephone. At his last stop, Mr. Graham discoversjim B. dreaming ofMarilyn, after having spent a long hard day at the Psychic Ward Qwhere he worksj. Exhausted but content, Mr. Graham gratefully returns to his room. Because of the high enrollment, several of the fellows live across the street in the seminary residence. Very late on this particular night, Doug M, is performing a psychoanalysis of a one-celled animal. Frank H. is busy hitting his Western Civilization book Qwith both handsj. Loel J. is engrossed in a study of hot rods, while his friend Don B. is frantically thumbing through a medical journal in search of a remedy for baldness Qanswer: Don't lose it in the first placelj The third floor tenant, Kermit B. , has just been given the news that he is a one-celled animal! ! Living in the seminary is almost like living at homey no loud hi-fi or stereos, limited telephone calls, but no T. V. to bother studying. Shhh! It 's quiet hours and time for all the boys to embark into dreamland. Let's tip-toe out before one of them hears us ----- , pegasus I am Pegasus, a winged imaginary horse. Over Grand View I fly, for that is my course. I'm always with you wherever you go, Watching your actions, and that's how I know Your thought and your mood, your laugh, and your tear The striving, rejoicing which make up the year. It strikes me now that some'thoughts from my flight May interest you, let me say if I might That you've all had a part in carving our year, You've helped make the image shine strong and clear. But now for a moment, let your thought go astray-- Try to think of Grand View in a different way. For instance, picture Elsie T. with short black hair Or Harry Jensen' falling UP a stair!! Imagine Mrs. Rasmussen teaching gymnastics While Mark Nussle is dorm mother. What a contrastics! Think of meeting Linda without her Ted. Picture the choir by Mr. Parker led, Because Bob Speed is playing tackle for Yale. Making everyone forget the 9:30 mail!! Can you see Judy as guardwhile Louis leads cheers Or a six foot Wayne Foged and a little Karl Sears?'?? How would it seem to watch Alice club Dan? 'Twould be like Maverick being shot by his man! Try to think of Frode in a new Tuxedo Accompanying an aria sung by Paul Wheedo! I ! Let's not go further. You understand How the spirit of Grand View goes hand in hand With individual people and particular events. To have it otherwise just wouIdn't make sense. Now as the end of my flight draws nigh I wish you the best and bid you Good-bye. grand views sta From left to right: Paula Maxheim . . Reporter Douglas Campbell . Reporter David Eldred. . .
