Let us before Thy face Walk here in truth and graceg And lea.d us on to grand and noble visions! Teach us the highest artg Wisdom that warms the heart! Give richer life to youth with true ambitions! QUE X DSX! 6660379 President Nielsen Whether one reads Sholem Asch's, THE APOSTLE, or Boris Pasternak's DOCTOR ZHIVAGO, one is deeply struck by a common witness from two different worlds to the place of suffering in the lifeof the people one meets on the pages of these two books. Personalities emerge. Both books are profoundly religious. They reflect the high talent and the complete dedication of the authors to their literary mission. There is a personal dedication for which each of these men has had to pay, thus confirming their central wimess that sacrifice is part of human life. In THE APOSTLE and DOCTOR ZHIVAGO, onecon- fronts the inescapable question, What did it mean to be a Jew? during the periods which these two books cover. Somehow we nearly always have an answer on hand to this question. Is it because this question does dis- turb our conscience? Strangely enough, we probably find it more difficult to ask, What does it mean to bea Christian? Many religious leaders are asking seriously for a lay-witness to this question. Although we do not deprecate such a development in contemporary Christian- ity and do recognize that many students from Christian communities in Asia and Africa are disconcerted, yes, even disappointed to find many Christian students in America rather reticent in matters of faith, reticence or slowness to speak tuttil one has something to say is better than shallow, religious verbiage. My point is that our generation is not without significant lay-witnesses to the creative and redemprive power or redemptive power of religion. We meet this in many contemporary writings of serious literature. The Christian college is an ideal place for students to begin to read great imaginative literature in religi- ous terms. There are modern authors whose writings show that modern man cannot come to grips with the basic concerns and issues of life without encountering religion. The source of such serious literature is inevitably trace- able to the individual writer's own person, his concern with the antitheses, tragedies, inevitabilities, and potenti- alities of man and life, and his deep commitment and dedication to his literary vocation. The pages between the past and the present are replete with records of those who dedicated themselves to a godly way of life. Perhaps they were fools in the eyes of their own generation, but in the case of many of them their deeds follow them and their legacy is ours. Although our knowledge is limited, we are not without light. We hope that students will follow the light and continue the pursuit of liberal education throughout life. Ernest D. KILDEGAARD Professor of Theology DONALD H. ZINGER Professor of Church History p Seminary Faculty Seminary education, as all education, attempts to comprehend the timeless within the context of time. Our lives are constantly involved in change, but we seek an anchor- age in those values and insights wherein men have known their security in the past. Grand View Seminary, in the midstof its sev- enth decade of service, has been aware ofthe tension of change more than ever as the church it serves moves toward closer fel- lowship and organic union with others. Our future at Grand View is limited to perhaps l one more year, but the realities of God's gifts of the past live more intensely as the fact of change becomes more imminent. Our true securities assert themselves with more positive vigor as false securities are exposed. God's love, and His gift of Himself therein, makes itself known in specifics. We do not know or serve Him in the abstractg the Christian faith is a proclamation, not a speculation. We study together in this conviction, knowing that our life has received from His hands but knowing also that our hope in Him is secure in the midst of change. For these few months the faculty and students of Grand View Seminary are intimately parts of each other's lives. Soon we will be scattered by circumstance over the breadth of the land, but in the faith and study of the timeless which we have here shared, we know that we will continue to be members of one another. AXEL C. KILDEGAARD Dean of Seminary REUBEN SWANSON Professor of Bible 2 . . we too behave, and so we speak.H II CORINT HIANS 4: 13 These three men are our upper classmen of the seminary. J' oe and Ivan are seniors this yearg and, as ordained ministers, they will go this summer to their first parish ministries. .Toe and Betty, his wife, and their fine family are originally from Waterloo, Iowa. ,T oe joined the seminary three years ago, after deciding to give up his success- ful career in photography. Ivan and his wife, Natalie, came to the seminary from Ventura, California. During the three years which they have spent here, they have been blessed with a son and a daughter. Everett, our rnidd1er now has only one year before his ordination into the ministry. He originally lived in Lake Benton, Minnesota. He and Miss Trudy Hansen were married on January 1 of this year. A. NELSON Pictured here are the three latest to make their entry into the seminary. They are the Juniors. Ralph, from Irene, South Dakota, joined the group after being graduated from South Dakota College last spring. Hans, who is from Exeter, Nebraska, decided to come to the seminary while he was attending Drake University. These men are all single as yetg but their time will be coming. Though small in size, our Grand View Seminary has benefited from a unique fel- lowship through our Thursday afternoon discussions over coffee, our evening group gatherings throughout the year, and our attendance as a group at various other meetings and lectures. One common hope of the seminary members is that we shall be able to share this fellowship by increasing our number in the future. TRUDY HANS EN Among the most popular activities at Grand View for those who like to sing, is the A CAPPELLA CHOIR. Under the direction of Mr. Speed, the ensemble rehearses regularly and performs at various times, both on and off campus. Each member seems to gain a better appreciation of the joy of music as the choir strives for perfection. The annual spring concert tour provides an unforgettable experience to those traveling with the group. This year the choir visited cities and towns in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and northern Iowa. RUTH P ETERS EN fa, QU mi? 59 I 379 QW CU I could not permit an opportunity such as this to go by without express- ing my sincere appreciation to you for the unselfish support accorded me throughout the past year. As I look back over the year just closing, there are many events that stand out clearly in my mind. I recall the remarkable victory dance, sponsored by the town students in honor of Bud, the F all Formal, the Christmas Dance, the U. K. Programs, the sock hops and the many other activities that were benefited by the full support and co-opera- tion of the student body. I should like to make a request. I know the value of your support, your encouragement, and your willingness to help. I now ask you re- turning students to support my successor in the same unselfish manner in which you have supported me. Decide now to help him whenever the opportunity presents itself. The council is composed of two dormitory students, two town students, one seminary student, one veteran, a nurse, and three faculty advisors, who, working together, help to make Grand View's student life successful. The president and vice-president, Leon Nedegaard and Keith Sweet, respectively, were elected at a special convocation meeting in the spring. The new council elected the secretary, Elizabeth Jenseng and treasurer, Ralph Anderseng at its first meeting in the fall. Bud, the mascot of Grand View College, the wooden bald eagle, had become sick and had died. The Saturday night which was to have been a party for poor Bud became instead his funeral. Oh, what weeping and wailing came from the black-clothed mourners as they shuffled into the lecture hall and sat in the seats just below Bud's coffin. So sad was the occasion that the Honorable Reverend Klein could barely speak the last rites without breaking down to weep in unison with the other mourners, Our poor, poor Bud! After the funeral, the immediate family, behind the pallbearers and beside the torch carriers, led the pro- cession through the streets to Union Park. No sooner had Bud been thrown into the river than the mourners clasped hands to snake dance back down East Ninth to the campus. Home to weep more? Why, no. Everyone gathered in the gym to await Bud's revival. Meanwhile there was music to dance to and refreshments to eat. And Bud did appear. At the close of the even.i.ng, he was thrown to the middle of the floor. The lights went out, there was yelling, there was scuffling, and finally there was victory. The town students emerged from the scrimmage with Budg and, as the old tradition goes, he was theirs to hide on campus, to be found, to be hidden, to be found again, and on and on until next year when he will probably die again -- so that he can be born again as the symbol of a new school year. The highlight of the year was the trip to the thirteenth annual Model United Nations Conference on the campus of the University of Wisconsin at Madison, Wisconsin. Even Mrs. R. got inon thefun the night the girls challenged the boys to a snowball fight. The emaciated lawn told the story of that furious battle of the sexes. P. S. The girls won! The number of sprains and strains has turned Grand View into the limpingest college in Iowa. Why does Helena's boy always come late to breakfast? Some morning we'll pry his eyes open and ask him. Dr. Nielsen must be pretty lucky. Out of all those people present at the Bud Victory Dance, he had the winning ticket, and Bud got a new father. Have you heard about the swimming pool in the Girls' Dorm? At least there was one Plain J' ane night when the combination of boys and buckets gave the girls a very wet evening. Evening devotions offer opportunities to our more talented pianists. Katherine Nyboe made her debut with the World of Song on the magnificent grand piano in the main lounge. A good time was had by all -- except Kathy. Mrs. R. took a sleeping pill on Halloween. What a ball! Too bad you didn't see the pop bottles fellasg you might have gotten away with it. Music Theory must be a tough class. Janet White, while under the influence of measles, wrote a Bach Chorale that ended up sounding like Chinese honky-tonk. No wonder Mr. Speed is getting grey! We all hope that J' im Doop isn't type-CaSt in those clever pantomirnes he does. It would be tough sitting next to him in a movie. All those navy blue sweat shirts that you see on the campus indicate members of some communist organization or other called the Peasants. We don't exactly know what it is they're dedicated tog it has us all mystified. Every Friday afternoon Lois Madsen gets that longing look in her eye and decides she is absolutely going to go home to Cedar Falls for the weekend. T. C. must be quite an attraction. Mrs. Williamson threw up her hands when she read the proof copy of Bob and Keith's Boys' Dorm News for the Viking. We've heard through the grapevine that it was pretty rare reading. The Girls' Dormitory smelled like a flower shop on Valentine's Day, which is just another indication that G.V.C. girls are pretty popular. We wonder if anyone has noticed what a. darling couple Mr. and Mrs. Parker are. Having 3 Sweet' heart isn't limited to the younger generation. Sandra Buck really rates. She goes with a faculty member! Who Pegasus is you may not know. Well, he's a winged imaginary horse. He'll always be with you wherever you go, So watch your actions or all will know. While flying over, he talks to us And told us some things you've been doing. If you heard your name please don't fuss, Remember it's only Pegasus. Our Homes Away From Home ...ForTheBoys... This is the Men's Dormitory, Grand View College. My name is Bud. I'm an eagle. I don't work here, but I manage to get around. I'm closing a big case, code number G.V.C. 1958-59. The date was September 14, 1958. As I roamed Old Mainl noticed some new tenants mixing with the returning sophomores. I checked the mug shots in the main office and found that they were new students. Their records were clean, but to make sure they stayed that way, the thoughtful sophomores gave them all showers one night. Time passed, and all remained quiet. CWell, at least it was pretty quietq I checked with Gil S. and Jens H., the cops on the beat. They said the boys were all going straight, butl decided to fly the route once myself. I started the rounds, and as I passed Nile B.'s room, I noticed the head mortician conducting his class in ernbalming. The word had slipped out thatPhilB. and Henry ,T . had died, but I soon stopped that rumor. I had warned those boys that this would happen if they continued to be so quiet. I resumed my patrol. A few doors down the hall, I nabbed ,T ack K. on a charge of disturbing the peace, and impounded h i s g u i ta r. I tried Arne C.'s door, but he had hidden out in the furnace room, where he was raising the roof with his trumpet. John D. was trying to convince Ken N. of the value of weight lifting. Ken was more interested in his Danish homework. As I headed on down the hall, I heard footsteps behind me. I turned around just in time to see Andy N., being hotly pursued by Wayne M., dribbling a basketball down the hall. Finally I calmed these two stars down, and paroled Andy to the care of ArtP., his trusty roommate. Peace was restored to second, except for the comment repeatedly heard from Ken R.'s room: Get off of my electric blanket! Suddenly an explosion rocked the building. It looked as if the local fireworks store were having a big display, supervised by Paul Z. I continued walking the beat, and soon I came to Mortensen's Casino. The head dealer, John M., was playing Black ,T ack with John J. and .Terry H. He was running a clean game as far as I could see, so I let the joint stay open despite Larry M.'s complaints about the noise. As I came into the hall again, I noticed the sound of several voices coming from Dick K.'s room. As it sounded suspicious, I checked on the noise. It was just a meeting of the core of the local cell of Peasants. They were just adjourning, and lsaw Erik.,G1en O.,C1em B., and Sam B. slip out of the room and disappear into the darkness. I headed into the business district. The night had brought a close to most stores, but ErikA.'s Top Chop Shop, Leon N.'s Dry Cleaning Service, and Bob J 's Art Supply were still open. I checked Pete M 's room, on the way past, for any hot license plates, but he was clean. Word came in that there was a rumble breaking out in Ted K.'s and Dan H.'s room. I opened the door, and barely ducked a flying pillow. I heard a cry of Vive la Beethoven, and then Ted, pipe in mouth, headed for the hills. As I headed east on the beat, I noticed two feet sticking through a transom. I figured it was a prowler, but it was only Wayne F., trying to get into his room. I stopped by the precinct station. Sergeant Gil S. was trying to pry confessions out of ,T im B. and Soren D., but they stuck to their stories: I didn't touch his bed. Keith S. was turning in a complaint of potato-water hands, while Willie M. was being held on suspicion of bulb-breaking. Max B. broke the silence by emitting a loud Gil- llllbert! andI said farewell to Sgt. Sorensen. The local record shop was just opening as I passed by. I stopped by the place just long enough to hear the manager Lee H., trying to persuade Erling D. to make a new record. Music to Shower to. I lost interest in this business transaction when I heard the local branch of KIOA radio start broadcasting from Ivan K.'s room. As I wound up the beat, I found Orland J. in Larry C.'s and Vern J.'s room, known as the haven to girls lost in the Men's Dorm discussing the importance of rutabagas. I didn't have any time to waste, though. I had a report to fill out, and this is it. ,Tust the facts, folks. I don't want to be dogmatic about this, but why are those girls never in their own rooms? I was merely looking for Elaine Sorensen the other day, and I ended up sticking my nose into every room in the Dorm. I started up the first stairway to second floor and found Mrs. R. straightening the pictures. As she didn't seem to know where Elaine was, I came around the corner to Jeanette C. andSandra G.'s room. Sandra was busily translating her French verbs and keeping an eye on the clock for that 9:25 coffee date. Jeanette wasn't there, of course. Probably down studying C?J with Maggy. In the next rooml saw J' oy with stars in her eyes - polishing her diamond, and there was Kathy doing piles of homework. Hers? Elsa D 's room was next, but she too seemed to be gone. I decided I'd probably find her when I found Elaine. The next empty room belonged to Neta S. and Leota L. I de- cided that N eta must be on third dreaming about that trip to California with Linda, and that Leota must be in the Church practicing organ. In the next rooml found Jean S. and Diane C. curled up on the floor, working jointly on one of their beautiful posters. Diane's roommate, Elsa M., was in front of the mirror experimenting on a new hair-do. As I passed the john I heard the strains of I'll never stop loving you floating out from among the soap bubbles. I guessed that Carol Ann must be washing her hair, and I wondered idly if Maverick was still in the first stall? Farther down the hall, I met Arla on her way to borrow something from Maggy, with Cassy close behind her. Must be nice to have Cousin' Mag across the hall. And speaking of Maggy, I found her busily scrubbing her face with Babo while telling J eanette, who was filing her nails, that it was hg turn to buy the cokes. When a look into ToveJ.'s room told me that she wasn't at home, I went on to Liz J. and Bertha I.'s room. I didn't really expect to find Bertha since Jens has a monopoly, but lo-and-behold, there was Liz, goofing off in her usual sweet, silly way. As I came up to Joy and Sandra B.'s room, a jet-propelled force knocked me back on my heels, and I watched breathlessly as Joy somersaulted down the hall. I wasn't quite sure about going into the room after that, but Sandra was earnestly pinning her mementos on the bulletin board, and I had to take a look. The next room was empty too, andl remembered that this was Pat J.'s old room, and since Janet W. had the measles nobody will live there. In Carol B. and Lois M.'s room I found Tove, mooching lemon drops as usual. Lois was in her customary slow dither, be- ginning to think about starting the term paper that was due in twenty minutes. Finally concluding that Elaine wasn't on second, I headed toward third. In Nancy O. and Janet W.'s room on thirdl found Nan fidgeting at the window. Dave must have been late again. Janet was sitting with -a U. S. History book on her lap, dreaming of Joe. Out in the halll found Marge in front of the mirror trying to decide which outfit to wear. Too bad Janet P. wasn't there to advise her, or lend her another outfit. In the next room, belonging to Alice O. and Bev. H., Bev. was feeding the goldfish while waiting for the iron to heat, and Alice was entertaining Barb. O. and Kathy M. with ga rendition of Rudolph. Bee R. was in her room butl cou1dn't get her attention, and the faraway look in her eyes indicated that Elvis had taken over. The thump-thump from the next room told me that I had found two of the G.V.C. cheerleaders. Sally D. and Connie'E. were working hard while Judy K. was curled up on the bed, giving advice. I found Sonja P. across the hall, combing Linda's hair, and Janice D. was getting ready to do her Staircase exercises again. Neta was there, too, just as I had suspected. Marilyn A. was sprawled on the bed recuperating from a folk-dancing session Nile, and Carol C. was just leaving for her own room to start another sewing project. I proceeded down the hall and found Mary ,To F. wasn't at home, but I remembered seeing her downstairs on the phone a half hour ago whenI came up. I remembered, too, that her room used to belong to Trudy, and I decided that meg was a girl who was very much satisfied with her new roommate. In the next rooml found that Karly K. missed her old roommate Betty, but Shelly B. and Edith A. were keeping her company by comparing Iowa with California. Finally I found out where Elaine was. She was trooping down the back stairs with a load of pop bottles, and Elsa D. was right behind her ready to pick up the pieces. Wait'll those freshmen get here. Mark, I. Kerr, L. Jacobsen, Coach D. Sisam. SECOND ROW: R. Randolph, D,. Kaupp,C. Omvig, An Nielsen, J. Hall, W. Madsen, and D. McCarthy. An example of a well-balanced basketball team was Grand View's basketball team this season. With the capable coaching of Dave Sisam, the Vikings compiled a sixteen win and five loss record. This record gave them a ntunber one rating in Conference season play, runner-up in state tournament play, and a berth in the ,Tunior College Regional Tournament. Depth is the main factor responsible for this impressive record. Of the fifteen players on the squad, there were eight starters during the season. All the players were outstanding, but the stand-outs were: Dick McCarthy, leading scorer with a 18.3 average per game, Jim Hall, leading rebounder and second highest scorerg Leroy Jacobsen, Bril- liant floor playg Clayton Omvig, all around fine performancesg and Wayne Madsen, all around fine per- formances. Due to a severe sprained ankle, Don Hansen, a starter last year, was unable to see much action. Andy Nielsen was laid up for six weeks with the mumps, and Rich Randolph, also, was slowed down at the first of the season with a sprained ankle. All in all, this season's basketball team will be one to remember. After months of fervent practice, the gymnastics class developed into an excellent exhibition team. After the members had executed a series of strenuous calisthenics, they acquired their necessary form and skill. Along with developing a sturdier body, gymnastics gave the participants a great appreciation of the European heritage which makes Danish gymnastics unique. This year the intramural football was revised slightly. Instead of the sock in the pocket foot- ball played in seasons past, the boys played straight touch-football. In touch-football, the defensive players, using both hands, must touch the ball-carrier below the waist, instead of pulling a dangling sock from the pocket of the ball-carrier. Despite the revision, the games proved exciting and the teams displayed enthusiasm and varied offenses. At the end of the season the Stargazers had the best won and lost record, and Scarlet Riders took second place. Intramural Football SEATED, Left to Right: T. Jespersen, I. Jorgensen. STANDING: R. KERR Grand View's baseball team played a six game season, this past fall with Ellsworth J. C. of Iowa Falls. The Vikings won two and lost four to the Panthers. The two Grand View victories were credited to the pitching arm of Larry Sowder. Sowder was also G. IOTZKE L. SOWDER one of the outstanding Viking players at the plate. He drove in the winning run with a bases-loaded single in the Vikings first win. Ivan Kerr, Gary McCoy, and Eric Ellgaard were also outstanding players for Grand View.
