Shield what our hands have wrought! Bless Thou the house which we have here erected! Save it from storm and flame, Evils of every name, Let by Thy Fatherhand it stand protected. We laid foundation here Facing defeat and fear, But Thou hast built the house and Thou didst cheer u Now as it stands complete, We kneel before Thy Feet, Whom Thou art near is safe, so be Thou near us! Let us before Thy Face Walk here in truth and grace, And lead us on to grand and noble visions! Teach us the highest art, Wisdom that warms the heart! Give richer life to youth with true ambitions! Shed on young hearts the light of inspiration, That all good seed strike root, Grow up and bear much Fruit Worthy of Thee, our homes, our church, our nation. Kr . Proverb Before graduating, every Grand View student is pro- vided with the key which may open for him that treasure of knowledge and skill necessary for the mastery of the English language. This key, or learning experience, is a most en- ioyable one bec a use it constantly reflects the personality and the humor of the person who provides it. She disciplines, but is always fair. She laughs, but never ridicules. She corrects, but does not fail to encourage. She is a teacher, and ever a friend. With our thanks for the part she has played in our college Career, we the 1958 Viking staff, dedicate this book to Cleo G. Williamson. 5 We ace We meet We w W live . . orship . . . the old an We love if! We progress . the new when meet! Greta arrives . . .' Nielregisfers . Elaine plays . We dance . . . xv1A'll Pueaident Ylielaen THE KEY TO TOMORROW There are many approaches to today's problems in education. The one which we shall give first consideration in T958 is the community approach. The inter-relationship which exists today between the college and the community is the result of the increasing number of situations in which members of the college, both faculty and students, work together with other individuals, groups, organizations, and boards for a better community. Besides a growing mutual appreciation between the college and the community, there is develop- ing a real awareness of the need for Grand View College in the city of Des Moines. The real task that lies ahead of us, as the next step in the advance of Grand View College, is to present the need with the view of obtaining very substantial aid for the college, for democracy and education can never be the concern of only the few. My challenge to the students of today is to accept the idea that there is a place in life for Christian stewardship in higher education with the view that one's college has a legitimate claim upon the benevolent giving of its graduates and former students. The key to tomorrow is an educated citizenry committed to learning, to responsible partici- pation, and to voluntary sharing in the cost of maintaining free schools in a free society. lo Ernest D. Uhoae who wean White Every afternoon at 4:00 a caravan of Yellow Cabs pulls up in front of Old Main. Not every student at Grand View has a private chauffer rain or shine, but the privi- leged few that do, add an important something to our campus: it wouldn't be the same without their presence. Of course, we're speaking ofthe Iowa Lutheran nursing students who do their college work here at Grand View. They spend many long hours each week in Hubbard's Cupboa rd, cutting up cats and looking at little bitty bacteria. The highlight of the nurses' year was March l6, when they received theirstarched white caps and recited the Florence Nightengale Pledge, signifying the successful completion of one semester of training. Wiht the first phase oftraining behind them, the freshman nurses, proudly wearing their new caps, turn eager eyes to the future when they will be com e full-fledged Nightengales. During the year, GV students enjoyed watching the Iowa Lutheran games prior to the college home games. Under the capable direction of Coach John Nelson, the girls ex- perienced a very enioyable and suc- cessful season, playing in the regu- lar city league competition. Action! I f-- . ., f I . .. w.. - Qi ll -it .F 5. 11+ Axel C. Kildegaard ll ll . .Realize 'Jhe '3ull Qlonq. . Students in the initial years of their college educa- tion are confronted with many choices. A lively interest in one area often has to be sacrificed in order that another may be explored more thoroughly. Doors open with every choice that is made as the student becomes more informed and more capable. But doors also close, and the options of yesterday are lost today. The educational process in exciting in the op ortun- ities which open up, but it can also threaten the human- ity of those it involves. A Christian who regards his par- ticular work as a calling necessarily submits to the dis- cipline of specialization. But as a Christian, he regards his calling as his means of service, not as the lord of his ife. The ministry of the church is served best by those who are sensitive to all human needs. Grand View Sem- inary is, as all graduate schools, concerned with spe- cialization. But we are also concerned with realizing and helping others to realize the full glory ofthe life for which man was created and to which he is redeemed. Students make choices in determining their own callings. But there must be windows in the doors closed behind them lest they lost their humanity. N . Leroy Norquist D. H. Zinger These three men comprise the full-time faculty of Grand View Seminary. Axel C. Kilde gaard, who serves as Dean, also teaches ethics in the college. Dr. Leroy Norquist, The Greek God , is very popular with Grand View students by virtue of his quick smile and interesting de votlons. The Reverend D. H. Zinger, new at the seminary this year, came to us from the United Lutheran Church of America. He taught seminary Church History and college philosophy this year Dr Emest Nielsen has also been teaching on a part-time basis in the seminary. 50 'Jhein Uenm .94 Done But Wouk .95 fluat Begun The four smiling gentle- 1en pictured here have com- leted their seminary training nd will soon become ordain- d pastors. His past profession of photography is now his hobby. Ivan is also married and has a new baby boy. Evy is single .... give him timel The seminary has held Wednesday afternoon coffee sessions nearly every week. These sessions find the faculty and students discussing everything from Bach to Brubeck, the nature of the reve- lation of God to getting a ticket for double parking, or the relevance of pantheism to going on a diet. One Friday night a month, the families get together for fellowship and entertainment. The highlight of the year was the Christmas party, complete with dinner, entertainment by the chil- dren, and a visit from Santa Claus. One thing still puzzles the group: Why did Santa Claus have all the wives of the seminarians sit on his la too? This year has found the senior students and the faculty members doing more weekend preach- ing than any other year in its history. It was not unusual to see six names on the schedule for preaching in Cordova, Nebraska, Waterloo, Iowa, Ames, Iowa, and other places. This was the only employment most of them had time for. Ivan, learned the ins and outs of the egg business, though, and Joe and Evy found time to be recreation directors at 'unior high schools in the city. College students heard the preachers of the future practice on them on weekends at devotions. lt was beneficial to the seminarians, if not always professional. This sem i nary is u n i que in its smallness. Although there are some disadvantages in being small, the fellowship enioyed in this size outweighs any disadvantage. It is their hope that the college students benefitted knowing the seminarians as they enjoyed knowing and working with the college students. 52 V-7 ll. K. Pueaident Memories. . .we all have memories from various experiences throughout our lifetimes. Some of these memories are and will forever be from our col- lege days at Grand View. U. K. has played no small part in these memories. Looking back over the year '57-'58 you will remember the mixers, dances, picnics, Saturday night programs, intra-mural sports , plays, a nd countless other U. K. sponsored activities that made you and me a part of U. K. and a part of Grand View. We leave all this behind now and move along the road of life toward new and unknown horizons. The extent of our success in life will depend largely on what we have done and what we have learned in the past--not only what we have obtained from books and study, but also what we have learned through our relationships with friends and companions in these growing years. By par- ticipating in U. K., helping to plan and take part in its activities, we have laid stepping stones that will lead to our individual goals in life. The old saying that you get out of life what you put into it still holds true. Give unselfishly to enrich your life. Remember Grand View. Be true to your God. Good luck and good-bye .... When looking back o- ver our pleasant memories of the past year, we should give bouquets to Paul Sor- ensen and Mark Johnson, co-chairmen, and their ef- ficient committee. 'lan 'Eau Ha The Publicity Committee is re- sponsiblefor the many decorative and well-done posters exhibited in the lobby of Old Main. Phyllis Raymond, chairman, and her staff have capably performed the time-c o ns u m i n g task of informing Grand View students of present and future activities. Congratulations to a cooperative and talented committeel Dr. Nielsen and his two able as- sistants, Betty Sondergaard and Marsha Parrott, plan the weekly convocations meeting for the Grand View students. With the leadership com- bination of Axel Kildegaard, faculty advisor, and Forrest Smith, president, the club enjoyed many interesting meetings. Some of the special meetings in- cluded a picnic and campfire discus- sion, an ebleskiver supper, and a visit to a Jewish synagogue. The religious discussion club met twice a month and proved to be a much desired asset to our busy campus life. p-Ftrfrxr it-V1 ls tiki ,MRP gpg? AWV? if Lp.: fn 'ifLfNH LMP fi A L. Each year Bud, an eagle representing the preceding year is buried, then a new Bud symbolizing the forthcoming year is born. As most students know, or soon find out, our mascot is not a real eagle. Over the years he has taken a variety of sizes, shapes, and forms. This year's Bud was a medium-sized wood eagle. On the fogg , dreary evening of September l7,l957, the stucientsof Grand View once again buried their beloved Bud. With the immediate family howling and carrying on, it was quite dif- ficult forthe most Reverend M. Nussle to give his tearful sermon. After the funeral, the immediate family took their positions behind the pallbearers and the pro- cession started. With the student body following, Budkwas adoringly carried to the r ive r in Union Par . Reve rend Nussle gave the parting words-- Ashes to ashes Dust to dust If you don't kiss your boyfriend His lips will rust. and SPLASH! , Bud was gone. 65 Here now! Maybe you'll find it better this way though, since whatl have to say has been-stored up so long that it has improved with age. As my friend archy the cockroach would say here it is with both barrels. The end of the year finds the girls' don'n keeping pace with the other improvements on our campus. I guess Harry must have taken pity on the girls' sore backs and broken ear- drums because the new beds and buzzer system have finally arrived. Speaking of improve- ments, Mr. Burham has at last been paroled from his dungeon and can be found brewing up a stonn in the new science building. Unde r the guidance of two capable Nielsens, Evy and Dave, the students' pride and joy, Valhalla, has become a reality. I guess gyeq politicians live up to theirpromisesl It beats me how.Dave can go out with all those girls and still get so much done. Evy has done his share of socializing too, but it seems that he prefers alittle blond with the initials Trudy Hansen. The Nielsens haven't had the corner on romance this year thoughi Cupid managed to arrange three engagements--Vema and Tom, Bobbie Grimes and her man from Minneapolis, and Lorraine and Howard IHe 's here so often that he might as well move into the boys' dormj. Pegasus suspects that similar things will happen soon to Harold and Carol A., John and Elna, and to Gil and his beau- tiful blonde Brenda from Chicago. Tom, Lee,-and Pete have not been seen around campus very often. I heard that they have been dating Broadlawns nurses. The love bug hasn 't been able to appease his appetite on the student body, so he has taken the faculty by storm. Is that Miss Moravec and Mr. Speed I see ruminating in the contiguous shade? I'd bet on it, and, moreover, I'd lay odds that the French and German tests are being typed by a private secretary. What made me the happiest of all was our housemother's marriage during Christmas vacation. I guess those Canadian lumberiacks really know how to make 'em falll If my memory serves me right, the freshman girls really got a good taste of dormitory life in the first week, when they were fonnally, or should I say informally initiated into the fold. The sophomore femmes went beserk with peanut butter, vaseline, and con- fiscated shoes and paiamas, while the innocent freshmen were being introduced to the faculty. Donn life was made more exciting by virtue ofa few unorthodox visitors, name- ly, Arabian princesses, an Asiatic flu nurse, and a mysterious ostrich that lost all its feathers on the second floor of the girls' dorm. The same floor served as a roller rink for Joy and Dagmar during one of their more conservative moods. The skating wasn'tso bad, girls, but at 3:00 in the morning? The boys in the dorm publicly exp re sse d their disfavor of confom1ity in the girls through a newspaperarticle written by Mark Nussle. This article caused a mild revolt as the girls appe a re d at supper in their Plain Jane attire, trying to prove the truth of Mark's statements. On this occasion we were favored with speeches by Sally and Tom D. , accompanied by appropriate hooting. The old place didn't seem the same second semester without the DX Buddies hanging around. Maybe the reason I haven't seen Lee, Bos, Ed, and Wayne isthat I'm not in the right places at the right times. But then, I'm not twenty-one yet. Look out for Steve Larson, he does more than play the piano with those talented hands, he entered the Gold- en Gloves and came out a winnah! Congratulations, Steve I G.V.C. was fortunate in hav i ng a fall play this year in addition to the Studenterfest plays. Mrs. Noyes saved money on makeup since Tom H. was able to cultivate his own red foliage. No one recognized him, once it was removed. once Speaks: H Students took mattersinto theirown hands this fall, protesting the cancellation of the picnic, by initiating a skip day. The doors of Main were chained and barred before rise in hopes of keeping faculty and town students out. I think Harry was tired of the y weathertoo because he made a public announcement that we would have the picnic, or shine, and we all took off for Pioneer Park. I can't seem to find the Venerable Four anywhere, they must be off to Osage again a Iime--pffft--freeze--pffft. Why has Tom D. given up dating the dorm girls? Show us your toothpick scars, Tom. Our downtown ball team really played downtown basketball at the downtown te tournament. Hats off to the team and Coach Sisaml Sandy and Marge were really in a stew over Mark and Tom F. The boys brought them Fastelavns in a bubbling cauldron. Also appearing at Fastelavns was a group of mys- ious Hottentots. I think Willy Williamson must have had something to do with that. I heard that Naomi Knoll received a gushing valentine this year from an anonymous 'er. Tsk, tsk, what next? Just because Dan F. drives around in January in his open convertible singing On -e Road to Ma n da I a y and Martha H. gobbles chocolate-covered caterpillars while ving her pick-up truck is no sign that Grand View students are peculiar. They're just ginal! Seems that Don H. and Erik E. played other games besides basketball at Webster City two Muscatine cheerleaders were the opponents. Meanwhile, back in the cafeteria, carrots were flying. I guess Greta didn't approve the flying vegetables though, because Gene Tam wound up with a glass of milk down neck. G.V.C. almost acquired its first satellite the n ight Clayton Omvig burned out the lkes on his dad's carl Jerry Hall really believes in spicing hislife with variety. How about that, dorm girls? As Ivan Dusek drives up to the dorm with a right-side door that opens only from the tside, an old Danish proverb comes to m ind, Step into my parlor, said the spider to e fly. I am a firm believer in giving credit where credit is due, so I feel it's only fair to I you girls that you can thank Wayne Ga nde r for paint i ng your Flame Room in lhalla. Could that possibly be Elaine Sorensen galloping down the hall to the tune of l int to be a Cowboy Sweetheart? Those hysterical shrieks issuing from the science building are only the thrilled com- nts of Jens H., Ken H., and Eivind L., who have just discovered that they are to be ned loose as the only men in the nurses' microbiology class. The first of them is Carol Ann B. who is getting ready for another big date with...say, who is it this time? Carol 's roommate, Tove J. is absorbed in listening to Scheherazade. As we enter the room of Suzie P. and Kathy N., we see Suzie, nestled snuggly in her bed. Seems as if she's the only person in the whole dorm who hasn't got night and day turned around, she must be or- ganizedl Kathy, the other occupant of the room, is the envy of every girl on the floor with her million and one home-knit sweatersl Next, we find Bobbie G. and Mir- iam T. sitting in Bobbie's room having a serious discus- sion about what kind of silver to purchase for their hope chests. When we notice that they are both sporting rocks the size of head stones, we realize that they are both about to tie the knot. As we leave the room, who should we bumpinto but Joan J. and Jeanette C. These two girls have a great deal in common these days and it looks like they're hoping to have even more in common in the future. As we peer around the next corner, we see Phyllis Raymond, on hands and knees, holding a paint brush in her teeth and designing a poster that ad- vertises the next U. K. dance. When we ask about Sally Buford, her roommate, Phyllis tells us that she is some- where between the Thriftwaystore and cheerleading prac- tice. Guess all she does is run between the two. The Vikings beat Marshalltown in the opening game of the State Junior College Basketball Tour- nament by a score of 86-64. The Vikings were always a threat at the plate, being led in the hitting department by the power slugging of Jerry Hall and the timely singlesof Don Brady and Ivan Kerr. R. Gray, E. Ellgaard, B. Williams, T . Stone, D. Johnson 90 Jntuamuual Spouta The Intramural sports program at Grand View is designed to provide wholesome physical exercise for the students who do not play varsity ball . The boys have an opportunity to play touch football and basket- ball andthe girls play volleyball. This year, Kasner's Ten copped the football titlebywinning every game on their schedule. Snow and mud seemed to hamper the style of the other teams. In basketball each team tried to out-do the other when selecting team names. The following examples shows the ingenious of the team members, Ancients, Danish Five, Gym Beamers, Naughty Norsemen, Nomads, Wildcats and Highballs. These seven teams were formed giv- ing some sixty boys a chance to run up and down the court. From the scores, it seems they pushed the ball through the hoop at a rapid rate. The girls' volleyball champs were under the guidance of Mavis Utoft. Ruth Sorensen's team finished second with only one loss. t It ,.i.,, CHAMPION VOLLEYBALL TEAM L. TO R.. SEATED. M. Kraft, M.
