W ,ac W as Q x Q f Q Q X - Not too steady was the reaction of Deana Bates, Lynn Hill, and friends after getting off the elephant at the San Antonio Zoo. The Alamo was only one of the historical sights seen by band members on their tour. San Antonio, here we come. After four years of working and planning, the band was ready to take off on their trip to the San Antonio Fiesta. When we arrived at school at 6:15 Thursday morning, moun- tains of baggage, instruments and junk were piled around wait- ing to be loaded onto two char- tered buses, and band members and mamas were scurrying around organizing everybody. Arriving in Austin, we took time for a short tour of the capitol and LBJ Library. The beautiful capitol grounds provided an excellent place to eat the sack lunches we had brought. With the sun shining brightly Friday morning, the group toured the Alamo, rode the riverboat, and just looked around at all the people. When news broke out that a sniper was firing into the crowd gathering to watch the parade, most of our group were only five blocks away. Sponsors hurriedly got the group together, and we huddled under a bridge for about two hours until we heard that the sniper was dead. Back at the motel, most were at the pool when Mr. Shively told us we were not marching as sched- uled inthe night parade Saturday. Saturday we spent either at the San Antonio Zoo or at the pool. Hamburbers were served pool- side, and most members enjoyed going to the theater that night. Sunday morning it rained, and everyone got soaked loading the buses. We were glad to get home. All seven members of the band who tried out for All-District Band in Canton January 15 were cho- sen. A concert was held on Janu- ary 2O after an all-day rehearsal. Members were Lynn Hill, Deana Bates, Ginger Gary, Libby King, Leta Ellis, Sandy Waddill, and Susan Garland. Making plans for the trip and other future events as well as dis- cussing current problems was the special job of the band council. Libby King, drum major, ai Ginger Gary, head majorett were automatically members the council. Deana Bates, Jul Faulk, Kip Humphrey, and Bec Dickerson were elected repr sentatives. Singing instead of playing at the last hoi football game are senior members Sus Yarbrough, Charlotte Peterson, Det Jarmon, Lynn Hill, Laura Dickersc Deana Bates, Anita Chandler, Hot Davidson, Lynn Stephens, and Lori Pre: wood. Hitting the right pitch to balance with the rest of the band is the toughest require- ment of French horn player, Ginger Gary. i 2
