We are fortunate in having this group so deeply interested in the welfare of the youth of this school. It was the members of this Board who had the fore-sight to plan and build the new Elementary School Building in Grand Rapids. We owe them our thanks for seeing and planning for the future. 3 grand JZ pub fublzc Sell l NO MAN J N JJWVQH GRAND RAPIDS OHIO ,1.,f,fJfn.,4fn4j yyffb f9J'3 M14 WMJHM 0 0 Cl 00 R DF. Salutatory R0 D TO SUCCESS Parents Faculty and Friends On behalf of this 1953 graduating class Iwant to welcome you to our commencement our beginning Probably a few years ago you my frlends were on a similar commencement stage maybe this one ready to step into an unpredictable future In spite of a troubled world and many hardships you have been successful to a great extent You have experienced two great wars and won them Between the wars you established years of peace but unfortunately had to face and experience a depression During this time doors have been opened to new fields of sclence roads have been started toward world peace Unfortunately there have been failures also We realize this especially as we look at our communist threaten ed world and its state today You are however growing older and your work is nearly completed Now it is our job to cope with these complex problems and f1nd a place in this troubled world We today have a goal to live 1n a peaceful world enjoying our many freedoms just as you had in the years of yesterday By this however l do not mean that the world will gain Just sixteen more inhabitants This IS hardly probable If we would give the world just one doctor who might bring health and comfort to his fellow men we should be successful lf we would supply the world with two or three excellent writers or musicians who would enlighten our world making it a more pleasant place 1n which to live we should be successful lf from our class could come two or three upright salesmen who will do their best to serve their community ters of the next generation we should also be successful Successfultoo would we be if future employers might be leaving thts stage who would be more concerned with the interests of their employees than their vast profits Most probable of all IS that fact that from this stage tonight will step slxteen men and women who will spend their free I1l'l'l6 guiding their children and molding honest characters of the next generation Then too if our children w1ll be able to take their place upon a commencement stage such as th1s tn the next generation still enjoying the same freedoms thatthis generation has preserved for us we shall be exceedingly suc cess ul Failure may seem to dominate a great part of our lives but as I consider this I think of a man who IS said to have really failed ln 1831 he failed 1n business in 1832 defeated in legislature in 1836 he suffered a nervous breakdown ln 1838 defeated agam tn public office in 1843 he was defeated tn Congress in 1848 defeated tu the Senate in 1855 was defeated for Vice President in 1860 was elected Prestdent and in 1865 was assassinated This failure was Abe Lincoln Yes our success IS yet to be tested Yet l feel that with the aid of our faculty parents and community we have been readled to obtain success in its fullest form Th1S Road to Success IS far from being a super highway yet we have been laying the foundation in these last twelve years Now we are to go on seeking more training and experience to complete and pave this our Road to Success 13 QQ 99 and their customers truthfully or maybe just one teacher who will spend his or her life molding the future charac- BACCALAUREATE COMMENCEMENT PROGRAM May 20 1953 Superrntendent Normand F Jones Prestdrng Invocatxon Rev Lours Haskell Musrc Glrls Chorus Lonely Mountarn Saluta tory Ma rrlyn Culbertson The Road to Success MUSIC Gtrls Chorus Alrce Blue Gown Valedlctory Rtchard Heyman Success Musrc Trumpet TI10 Drck Yawber Glenn Feather B111 Thomas MY Lloyd Dull Class Address S Mr Lloyd nun A Desxgn for Lrvrng Musrc Instrumental Duet Dlck I-leyman 8s Sharon bong Presentauon of Class Mrs Suzanne Donnell Presentatton of Drplomas Mr Ben Pollock Benedtctton Rev Louts Haskell Prelude Processronal Invocatron Msulc SCIIDIUIC Mustc Class Sermon Muslc Benedrctlon Recessronal Class Motto May 17 1953 Pomp and Ctrcumstance Bless Thrs House Rev Tom Alverson Tom Alverson Louts Haskell M1X6d Chorus Rev Louls Haskell Marrlyn Culbertson Rev Lours Haskell The Lord Bless You and Keep You Class Flower Rose Class Colors Blue and Whrte Mtxed Chorus Rev Louls Haskell Tom A lverson Hrde not your talents they were made for use What s a sun dlal rn the shade?
