Uulz, UL Jnmofuww Parents Mebers of the Board of Educatron Faculty Class of 1952 and Frrends Tonrght we the Semors of 1952 are facrng the challenge whrch all those who have completed 12 years of educatton must meet We are only a few of the many young people who are con fronted wrth th1s challenge Many have gone before to set examples and bulld for us the stepprng stones e1ther to success or to farlure Strll others W1ll follow wlth better solutrons to the problems whrch W1ll contlnue to arrse But today the challenge IS ours to accept For 12 years the class of 1952 has worked together co operatrvely Tonrght we separate each one gorng hrs own way and how we shall deal wrth th1s challenge rests wlth each one 1nd1v1dually Now our country 1S 1nvo1ved ln a confllct rn Korea We as c1t1zens of the Unlted States are responsrble for solvtng the problem of war whrch l1es before us In attemptrng th1s we must look about us and see where our strength hes Our country rs un1ted by a Constrtutron whrch QIVGS us a democratrc way of l1fe by guaran teelng to every man woman and chrld free dom of speech relrgron and press But th1s doesn t seem to be enough to solve the growrng problems of th1s age Could rt be we are are not applyrng these freedoms rn the rrght way? In a recent lssue of the Look magazrne l read an artrcle entrtled Are Unlted States Teenagers ReJect1ng Freedom? It began by stat1ng that rf Amerlcan hlgh school boys and glrls could go to the polls tomorrow a shockrng number of them mrght very well vote to throw away some of the most rmportant freedoms guaranteed to all c1t1zens of the Unrted States My belref IS that they would not knowrngly do so but because of changed condrtrons ID the world today those freedoms erther have lost therr real rmportance or have become less srg nrfrcant rn the mrnds of teen agers Further drscussron drsclosed that one group of teen agers has an open mrnd on controversral rssues and the other group consrsts of those who re1ect our basrc freedoms IS not 1nterested rn controverslal lssues and IS more llkely to accept commumstrc pr1nc1ples Regardless of the type of teen ager to whrch We mrght belong we have common responst b1l1l1SS Today the government requrres all young men to regrster for mrlltary servrce upon reachrng the age of 18 Thelr responsrbtltty then IS to fulfrll the demands whrch the govern ment exacts from them erther 1n a mrhtary or c1v1l1an way Due to th1s demand many frelds rn educatlon and lndustry are left open The challenge to f1ll them must be met by the young women and others from whom the government does not exact mllrtary seryrce Thts changed manner of l1v1ng has contrrbuted to an un settled cond1t1on ln our famrly l1v1ng In sprte of all the d1ff1cult1es confrontrng us scrence cont1nues to come to the rescue and Joln together all peoples of the world Many modern 1nvent1ons a1d us electrrcal advance ment 1n the freld of radar and televrsron d1s coverres rn medrcrne rncludrng penrcrlhn and sulfa drugs and rnvestrgatrons and experrments rn atomrc warfare These are a few of the way rn Whrch modern scrence has un1ted all natrons In Berne Swrtzerland a monument was erected a number of years ago to rllustrate how the world has been un1ted by the rnventron of the telephone A huge sphere carved from rock IS mounted on a pedestal surroundrng the sphere are statues of all races of the world A yellow man a whlte man a red man a black man etc untrl all races are represented each holdrng the hand of the other and makrng a complete crrcle about the sphere Today we have th1s world unrty but we lack greater co operatron on a world wrde scale Our greatest present day attempt at th1s rs our Unrted Natrons plan Great mrnds from all parts of the world are workmg together unceasrngly and surmountrng untold drffrcultles to accomplrsh therr arm of world peace Thrs too IS our challenge along Wrth the pre cedrng ones 1 have enumerated How we shall meet them only the future wrll decrde And 1n the words of the poet Longfellow Let us then be up and dorng Wrth a heart for any fate Strll achrevlng strll pursulng Learn to labor and to wart KARLYN IOHNSTON . , , , . . . . . , ' . .
