SCIIINIL HISTIIBY In the summer of 1831. Charlotte Howard, a sorightly maid of seventeen, who had just arrived from Dresden, New York, was engaged to teach a subscription school, for which she was to receive one dollar per week and board around. A room was secured in Robert Howard's dwelling, a log house. which stood near the west line of what is now the ul. XY. Kerr farm, and was about half a mile from any road. Thirteen pupils were enrolled. ln 1832 Bliss Howard taught another school in a little shack that was built for a smoke-house, lt stood where George Tonjes' dwelling is. For this second term she received one dollar and fifty cents per week and boarded 'round. This schoolroom was I2 x I2 and had an enroll- ment of ttu-ntt, The pupils were known as the Sardines. In 1832 lidward lloward, William Pratt and Emanuel Arnold, the first trustees of Xteston townshipithen comprising what is now Grand Rapids, Heston, Milton, jackson and the western part of Washington townships- established five school districts. Of these, No. l, from which the present Grand Rapids schools date, extended along the river from the Henry county line, east two miles and from the river south one mile. This territory at that date included about 75 per cent of all the school youths in the township, and hence the other districts were made larger, in order to include enough youths to form a district: for instance, No. 5 was four miles wide and fifteen miles long. It is said that the farthest pupils in this district had to start the day before in order to reach the school house on time. That same year the first school house in the district was built. It was a low log shack, l6x20. with a shack roof, puncheon floor and benches. lt was heated by a Ere-place. and was erected at a cost of sixty-seven dollars. including the architect's fees.
