'lk I DEDIC TIO To the community of Grand Rapids for their everlasting interest, untiring effort and abounding sacrifices in making our school activities happier and more successful, we, the annual staff of 48 most sincerely dedicate this annual. SCIIINIL HISTIIBY In the summer of 1831. Charlotte Howard, a sorightly maid of seventeen, who had just arrived from Dresden, New York, was engaged to teach a subscription school, for which she was to receive one dollar per week and board around. A room was secured in Robert Howard's dwelling, a log house. which stood near the west line of what is now the ul. XY. Kerr farm, and was about half a mile from any road. Thirteen pupils were enrolled. ln 1832 Bliss Howard taught another school in a little shack that was built for a smoke-house, lt stood where George Tonjes' dwelling is. For this second term she received one dollar and fifty cents per week and boarded 'round. This schoolroom was I2 x I2 and had an enroll- ment of ttu-ntt, The pupils were known as the Sardines. In 1832 lidward lloward, William Pratt and Emanuel Arnold, the first trustees of Xteston townshipithen comprising what is now Grand Rapids, Heston, Milton, jackson and the western part of Washington townships- established five school districts. Of these, No. l, from which the present Grand Rapids schools date, extended along the river from the Henry county line, east two miles and from the river south one mile. This territory at that date included about 75 per cent of all the school youths in the township, and hence the other districts were made larger, in order to include enough youths to form a district: for instance, No. 5 was four miles wide and fifteen miles long. It is said that the farthest pupils in this district had to start the day before in order to reach the school house on time. That same year the first school house in the district was built. It was a low log shack, l6x20. with a shack roof, puncheon floor and benches. lt was heated by a Ere-place. and was erected at a cost of sixty-seven dollars. including the architect's fees. This building stood near the southwest corner of the Edward Howard farm, about where the Claude Inman hottie now stands. ,K 'MX .J K, Cll00l Ill T081 Con t In 1833 and 34 'Vltss Howard taught tn thc new school house Hung now tn thc pttbltc schools hcr s1l1rx was adx tnced to two dollars pcr week botrd as beforc one racc cnrollmcnt thtrtx Thc coursc bctgtn 11111 cndcd wtth 11 cbstcr s Spclltnc Iioolt ltt 1837 thc grett monex ptntt ctusctl 1 profound dcprcsston 111 all cnterprtscs tntl thc contmon schools rcccttcd at great btclcsct Ileoplc rctnoxcd from thc X l lagcs sccktng dlJl10l'l1I1C11U1'115C cttough on w htch to ltxe Onc ohn C Qptnlc of Pcrrx sburg lllfl purchtscd the Edw 1rd How 1rd farm 1t1d as thc tow nshtp h 1d no tlced for thc sc l1ool proocrtx tn Dtstrtct lNo 1 'X1r Sptnlc de mtndcd rcnt but thcrc was no moncx 'Nlr Sptnlc fttled tn thc P11111 tl1c propcrtx thcn wclll btc lx to Mr llow 1rd 'Ilc pcoplc h td thctr school b tclc bttt no tnonu so e school -.luntpcd 845 thc N c Jcgtn to ton f lot w purchtscd md 1 ttcw school housc crct tcd thc httcst tn ood Lountt lt as c ts now thc 1111 part of thc dwclltng of ohn 11 caver I 11 lcndcrson A P Donaldson Edward Olnex Dtxtd Dontldson and others of more or less rcnown taught tn thts butldtng In 1851 the schools of Hood Countx gttncd constder able tmpetus bx the teachers organtztng and pettttontng the commtsstoners for funds to defriv the cxpenses of an tnstttutc to be held at Perrtsburg thu recctxed S40 Of the tcachcrs pettttontng we wtll mme thosc frotn thts tmmcdt tte vtcttutx Thu were Ccorgc Kttnbcrltn I dward Olnev Adelwa Olnu Marx I' Olnu A F Donaldson Marta Bamber and Hamtlton Pratt In 1857 thc school had grown so hrgc tn Dtstrtct 'Vo 1 that tt had to be dtvtded and a log cabtn whtch stood on the ground now occupted bx the Cl1rcnce Sweet Shoe Shop was rented for a prtmarx school Marx F Lacw was h1red as teacher The enrollment was ftftx ntne Por a greater number of the puptls thts was thc ftrst school and the toungest of then1 1f ln tng todax would be ntnetx stx xetrs old 111 1858 a new school house was btttlt 1c11n tt w as the largcst 1nd bcst tn Vlood County It was a two storx framc intl stood on the thrcc lots ttow occuptcd bx the dwclltngs of J -X Vlanor and I'lave Paxnc Latcr tt was Box cd down to Front Street and bectmc the Commertcal otcl thts tlatc thc pcoplc lt td ifUp1LCl the MXlxrot1Stl1ft aw ct cn ict l111L tc fl t PX in s c rst 1lX1'111lt114ll1l 111 NLT NK UU S f' X 1 1 'Xltss l ucx N20 r nc irlx to s ools mg tncn 11 ge r n c t cc couuttcs to tttcm st too fhcrc wcrc tnorc fortt 1 puptls tn thc Htch School th1t1 thc rc wcre rcstdcttts In tl1c wttttcr of 1811 lug, tn i111tlXC111t'f11l,U1'1l1l crcc tton a ncw school house 11 1 w s c ed to iuthortlc tht bztrd to purchasc ground 11141 td 1 school housc tl wott c rttd -1-1 t 17 7 t ntrtct w s s Il1il1lSUl1 11 cc tt hts otlc s x 1 o class rooms on c lfll floor c s 011' bctnc thc Htgh School lt scrxcd the QUI11l111l11l1N tor fortt xcars Thc school botrtl mcmbcrs tn 11416 wcrt lttrlcy rr lcc Hexmtn 1' I- HUH111111 Itrtntn Crtf 111 Howard Dax ts Rollo Shull w 18 clcrlc of thc Botrd The present school btttldtng was complctcd 111 1017 It was destgned bx Howard tntl N1crr11111 trchttccts 1nd tt bx thc C li trnct Con-.tructton Co tt 1 cost 333 10700 A CCHl1 il17LfI school cltstrtct was formcd of tcljtccnt sccttons of Lttc ts Hood 1nd Hcnrx Counttcs 11111 buscs were htred to tr tnsport students to 1nd frot11 rural dtstrtcts The old butldtng was sold to Clark Patton w ho demol tshed tt and used thc brtclcs to butld the Patton Butldtnq on Ham Strcct In 1936 wtth the atd of the Publtc 11 orlcs Admtntstratton a combtnatton audttortttm LXHIIIISIUII1 was added to thc south stde of the school butldtng at a cost of 332 000 O0 In 1937 thc htg,h school w 18 certtficd ts a stx tear htgh school On unc 1 1939 bcctuse of the choltrshtp at tatnment of the school tt was tpprox ed ts a ntc mber of The North Central Xssocntton of secondarx schools 1 71 7 0 J I 1 ' - y :Xt ' I - - 1 tl 1 ' ,tl 5 , -' ' ' f ' ,Q - ,Q 4 - - - I..
