All through the fall and winter, Elbert Veenboer, Junior Col- lege's able and competent coach, worked with the girls' tennis team in the gym. There was an unusually large turnout this year with a number of hopeful prospects. The top four girls from last year's team returned again this year. They are Betty Barnaby, Loraine Anderson, Carol Frazier, and Glenna Moore. Enthusiasm was high this spring, and the girls were smashing the overheads and drives with vicious strokes. TRACK When frost was on the ground and snow flurries still in the air, JC's thinclads could be heard thumping their way into condition on the hardwoods of the East Building. Inconsistent weather was the hampering factor this spring. The Raiders traveled to Kalamazoo to stage their first meet with Western Michi- gan. JC garnered 34 points to Western's 96. This meet demonstrated Jack lilap's ability in the field events, however, for he was high point man with 13 points. Hlap broke the school shot-put record with a heave of 41' 10 . In the second meet Hope was beaten 72-59. Kiselewski's ability in the hurdles and high-jumping enabled him to be high man with 13 points. Posthumus was a dual winner, taking the mile and the two-mile races. Miller was impressive throughout the season in the century while Foster was the mainstay in the broad jump. ! t, , S 4 A T -Y ,y -E On Guard Vicious Smash Charlotte Runnell and Glenna Moore Betty Barnaby What will it be, badminton, archery, rhythm, or -folley ball? Twice a week the girls meet to learn and enjoy the game of their choice. Badminton seems to fascinate .laysee girls and is a game of great speed and skill. Of course, archery holds its usual attraction, and many of the girls become tops before the end of the semester. Rhythm is another favorite of the girls at laysee. Those who join are particularly interested in achieving grace and poise, but fun and good exercise is found in country dancing. Many a would-be tennis champion is a great enthusiast of paddle-tennis, which is the foundation of tennis. The girls certainly show their stuff in the volley ball classes. These sports really give the muscles a workout. Heep it up, girls! Badminton Ardith Stevens Square Dancing-Joan Crawford and Donna Lenning -'Vi t
