Lack of equip- ment was a big problem and added to it was the need for a practicing and playing field. To top it all off the weather was most unpredictable and caused a late start for practicing. From a huge original turnout of fifty-five men, the team was narrowed to a nucleus of tryouts consisting of 20 men. When questioned about the team early in the season Mr. Waters stated, This year's team lacks experience. The hitting has been impotent but is sure to improve as the season gets under Way. The team had a large turnout for the pitching staff. Counted among the candidates were Jim Butler, Norman Woodstra, Bob Heena, and Joe Volmer. Butler was heavily depended upon for mound duty. Hen Hausser and Nick Wehrman divided the catching duties. Hard-hitting Stewart Myers played first base for the Raiders. The key- stone sack was defended by Bob Taylor, Bill Hibbert, and Jack Schaver. Hibbert played second and Schaver was short-stop, while Taylor alternated between the two spots. Coach Waters had a difficult choice for third base. Simmons and Bob Zaremba both showed excellent ability. Pete Kramer, capable at most positions, was used as utility infielder. From the turnout for outfield positions J. Lapley, Neil Slagter, Tom Ohland, and Harold Mitchell seemed most prominent. They showed a better than average hitting ability. At the time of the Olympian deadline the base- ball team had lost one game to Calvin College by the score of 4-3. This was a heart breaker for .lim Butler who pitched a great game only to lose out through a cluster of errors. A greater loss to the team was that Butler might not be able to continue the season because of a sore arm incurred while pitching the Calvin game. Lapely, Myers and Simmons did the best hitting in this game.
