Throughout the long winter the mem- bers of the team industriously set about rounding into condition. Their efforts were well rewarded with victories in the first matches. From an unusually large turnout, Mr. Veenboer narrowed the team to eight men. The first three, Alex Martin, Ken Kimble, and John Hesse, were of such even calibre that their positions showed frequent Changes. The other five showed much promise and were instrumental in the first matches. This year marks the thirteenth year of coaching at Junior by Mr. Veenboer, during which time he has produced many outstanding tennis teams. The Raiders lost their first match with Calvin 5-4. The next three were victories over Alma O-8, Hope 4-5, and Central Michigan 4-5. 59 W itfit l if it if 1 ,, Www if flu . ., is it if

H. Geurkink had one of the brightest prospects in 'years for a victorious 1947 golf team. The team was chosen by an elimination process in which the winners played the winners of their coupled groups. Being cut down to eight men it included Miller, Zylstra, Helm, Scruba, Stracotenko, Hula, Rooney, and Wall. Early competition was very stiff for number one position. Zylstra, Miller, and Helm were low scorers in the first matches. The Raiders had a fifteen game schedule which included seven home games and seven trips with a tournament meet at Port Huron. As the team stood early in the season its record of four Wins and no losses was impressive. These scores were Alma IIV2-6V2, Central Michigan 9V2-BV2, Calvin 11-1, and Muskegon .l.C. 12-0. 58 't
