Vander The Christian High Circle is composed of a group of mothers and other friends of the school who wish to work for its welfare. The funds we raise from our activities, such as sponsoring the Hostess Dinners, catering, tray rental, and four new project this yearj checking service in the Gym, are all distributed among the various needs of the school. At our meetings we enjoy various programs - a book review, a Christmas music pro- gram, a library tour with Mr. Smilde, pictures of Holland, a debate arranged by Mr. Day, a style show by Miss Newcomb's group, and several sewing meetings for our Christmas Bazaar. There is fine mutual cooperation between the Circle and the school through Miss Zandstra, o,ur sponsor. May God continue to bless our efforts in behalf of our school. ' ' Joe Ollebeke' Gcmge The Board To the Graduates of 1958: The Board wishes to take this opportunity to congratulate you upon reaching this stage of your education. According to lfVebster, education is: instruction and training in an institution of learning, and the systematic development and cultivation of the natural pow- ers, by inculcation and example. To be sure, Christian education to which you have been exposed these past three years, is all this and much more. Christianity in education is not a separate course in religion that has been added to the other courses of study, as one would attach a garage to a house. The Christian theory of education is a positive belief in the idea that Christianity is a world and life view, and as such must permeate each and every course in the curriculum. Human reason is used in the process of learning, but it always must be guided and corrected by divine revelation in jesus Christ and in the Bible. Mfe believe that you, as graduates of the Christian school system, are now better able to dis- cover your abilities and their meanings, and, as a result, will now go forward encouraged to use your education not to get things, but for the glory of God, by being of service to men. What lies behind you and what lies before you is not nearly as important as what lies within you. We say this because as you face an era of vast scientific development, rest assured that God is not found in the test tubes of the nation's laboratories, but in the hearts and lives of each one of you. May the secondary Christian education you have received be a means of open- ing up the way to far greater accomplishments, and may the principles of Chris- tianity be of primary consideration in whatever field of endeavor you choose to follow. Alfred G. Gelderloos, Secretary Mr. E. R. Post The student body would like to express their appreci- ation to Mr. Post for his capable leadership and direc- tion of Christian High. His pleasing personality and post-marked humor have been evident in all his deal- ings with us, and his kindness and understanding have made our stay unforgettable. With the exception of two seasoned veterans, the mem- bers were all new, but everyone willingly tackled the topic - Resolved: that the United States Government should limit economic aid to individual countries to technical assist- ance and disaster relief. Last year we had met with other Christian schools in our area for a practice round prior to the official debate season, and Coach Day's hope that this might become an annual event came a step closer to fulfillment with our second such round with Unity and Holland Christian teams this year. The Debaters also went to Grand Haven and Battle Creek for State tournaments, and, in return, entertained Muskegon 'Catholic Central and Muskegon Heights here for the other State debates. The Christian High Ladies Circle helped us to also entertain the City League teams for a round of City Debate. All this added up to another season of a helpful accumulation of experience and information. The Club, which is composed of Varsity and Reserve Cheerleaders, and mem- bers of the student body, has been very successful this year in sponsoring pep rallies. In addition to this, it sold both pom poms and Screams of the Eagles , a pamphlet composed of all the Christian High cheers. The Club would like to thank Mr. Vander Puy and Miss Tucker, its sponsors, for all the hard work and enthusiasm which they have put into it. President .................. The club met regularly to learn about music. This year the members studied Bach, a Mozart symphony, Amahl and the Night Visitors, My Fair Lady, and The Vanishing Island. Projects of this year included selling paddle pops at a basketball game, and selling brownies at school. This money helped the club reach its goal of giving a half scholarship to both a vocalist and instrumentalist for two weeks at Inter- lochen. l lst Row' M Van Vliet L Toerin M Groot R Hulst L .. ,. g, . , . ,.VanEss 2nd-Row: C. Vander Puy 1 Phil, Mfard, Jack, Dave The Concert Band was raised to a new AA classification this year as the school enrollment expanded to 1100. Members of the band met the challenge and competed with top honors in Dis- trict and State competition. Highlights of this year included the fall and midwinter concerts at which the band combined with A cappella Choir to give two very out- standing programs. The band also enjoyed play- ing their spring concert with guest conductor, Mr. Falcone. Participating in the Midwest Band Festival and marching in several parades added to the activities of the band. Socially, members of the band had fun, too. They thoroughly enjoyed both their banquet and their spring outing held at Camp Manitou- lin. Throughout the year the band worked hard under the capable leadership of Mr. Vander Puy, and the members were rewarded by their fine musicianship and fine performances. 95 lst row: Lois Spaninga, Nancy Daverman, Marlene Bass.
