The Board To the Graduates of 1956: From the Board, hearty and sincere congratulations upon the completion of your chosen courses of study. During your three years the physical aspects of our school have changed as greatly as during any comparable period in the 35-year history of our school. The Madison Building was acquired at a timely occasion. Tempo- rary classrooms in adjoining houses, which had long been a part of our campus, were demolished to make way for a long cherished goal--a physical education building and gymnasium now under construction. In the midst of all this change and growth there has been an important phase of your school activity which persistently strengthens itself. Our covenant God has not withheld His blessings from our school. Your Christian parents have unstintingly encouraged and faithfuly stood by you in your needs and problems. The staff at Christian High, principals and teachers, sympathetically guided you. Our Christian community continues to respond to the needs of our school with its liberal support. These favorable factors which you have enjoyed while at Christian serve as an ideal foundation in your life's plans: but they will also require a response from you. It is our sincere hope and prayer that these several influences may be strengthened and blessed by our God toward realizing your hopes and ambitions, and that through his grace you too may be a blessing to His kingdom as we hope our school has been to you. The Board Louis Van Ess, Secretary Mr. E. R. Post The little fellow with the big job of prin- cipal at Christian is Mr. E. R. Post. He has ably guided us in everything from morning chapel talks, with his funny jokes added, to problems of the most serious of natures. His pleasing personality has al- ways spurred us on and with his leader- ship we were inspired to attain higher goals and to maintain high standards. We will always remember Mr. Post. Poelstra, N. Heitier, V, De Vries Student Council The purpose of the Student Council is to promote better relations between the faculty and the student body, to enable the student body to have a more effective witness for God, and to unite the student body for all-school activities. The Student Council meets every Thursday noon to discuss the problems brought before it. This year it has been very active in promoting better rela- tions with other schools. The Council has become a member of the Inter- High Student Council, which is com- posed of representatives of all the Grand Rapids high schools. During this year, the Student Council has also reg- ularly sponsored chapels, printed the Student Guide, and sponsored an all- school skating party and a Career Day. It has been ably guided in all its proj- ects by Mr. De Bie, its sponsor. lst Row: R. De Leeuw, K. Pastoor, C. Terpstra, A. Haeck, M. Ellens, L. De Heer 2nd Row: A. Worst, N. Reitter, I. Postema. D. Wiarda, D. Fuller H. Koning, T. Hoogeboom, K. Verhulst Debate In September, 1955, the debate team was re-activated, after an absence of more than a year from active compe- tition. Christian High debated with the five high schools in Grand Rapids and with Muskegon High in a city round-robin debate meet. We also met Ionia, Big Rapids, Lansing, and Muskegon Heights in the state tournament. By the yard- stick of growth and improvement we know that Christian High made strides toward regaining its formidable posi- tion in debate circles. We have sold paddle-pops at bas- ketball games to raise money. This money in turn is often donated to the school for various ip deserving projects. Membership in the club is by election or by seniority, at the present we have 25 members. Upon entrance into the club each member must go through the process of initiation planned by , older members. Having passed this initiation, the new prospects are then admitted to the The initiation club. We wish to thank our sponsors, Mr. Zwier and Mr. Ruiter and club President, Bob Vroon, for their co-operation in making this year a success. ,-L. l ff Q 'un The Varsity Club, which is composed oi all major letter winners, has had another very ac trve season Durrng the past year we have grown ln sxze due to the add1t1on of track of our sports currlculum Thrs year as you pass the front of school you w111 see one of the Varsrty Club s accom phshments a steel schedule board wrth the current sports schedule on rt We also pnnted small pocket sxze schedules for the basketball and sw1mmmg season The Varsrty Club would lrke to thank our sponsors Mr Boelema and Mr Vryhof for the1r earnest effort to make the club a success We would also llke to thank the students for buyrng our donuts every Wednesday Thanks a lot Varsity Club Varsxty Donuteers PV' ' 'W aw+- cz: 1stRow I Vandermeer B Doezema R Betten L Hamstra R Van Dellen R Brummel B Even house I Rxtsema 2nd Row Mr Boelema P Noor I Veltman D Vander Wall I De Vnes L De Heer R Verhey D De Mol Mr Vryhol 3rd Row B Kunst V Haan K Greenwood C Rozema I Steele A Vander Meer B Vroon C Boelkms 4th Row I Harkema D Hoekwater T Haga I Vander Lmd G Hoekzema B Nanmnga V De Vrxes C Pastoor I Venema P De Vos . . . , I 1 - - I i' V. We are especially fortunate in having the services of three nurses as outside sponsors, Mrs. Richard De Mol, R.N., Mrs. Henry Kamstra, R.N., and Mrs. Cornelius lbershof, R.N. All the clubs are under the school sponsorship of Miss Zcmdstra. Our meetings are scheduled for the second Tuesday of each month, from 3:15 to 4:15. The purpose of the meet- ings is to acquaint us with the different phases and the many possibilities of the nursing careers. We show films that picture the kinds of work nurses do, and we have nurses and student nurses come in to talk to us and an- swer the many questions that always come up. Once a year we take a field trip to some place of interest, to see nursing or some related phase actually at work. Tours of our city hospitals are also on our annual program. fmt iw lst Row E Hollander M De Vrres R Van Tongeren M Walters I Wrers C Huxsman I Klanderman 2nd Row Mrss Ten Broek L Hoekzema B Van Dreal M Horjus S Helmus Mrs Haan 3rd Row E Werkema I Vander Laan L Haan K Vander Wal B Vander Woude N Kemmk H Te Velde P Kaastra 'funn 'I ll ll Walters M De Vrres R Van Tongeren Music Club The Mus1c Club has agam had an en Joyable cmd profrtable year under the spon sorshrp of Mrs Haan and M1ss Ten Broek Its mneteen members have held meetmgs on alternatmg Wednesdays at whlch they studred musrcal composmons and hstened to var1ous members perform The Mus1c Club ralsed funds for mcreasrng the fac111 t1es of the school s mus1c department and some of lt was set asxde for cr mus1ca1 scho1arsh1p At the request of the student counc1l the ofhcers conducted a Mus1c Club sponsored Chapel servlce A hrghhght of the year was the Faculty tea whxch the members gave Lookrng back on the year s act1v1t1es the Mus1c Club can say that thxs year has been truly successful O 5 V 7 . 1 , I ' f - ' ' . sig Q., Sq K , . A rebuilding program being necessary he concentrated on younger material with an eye for coming sea- sons. Though we lacked the height and experience of former years this year s team accomplished more than the local newspapers predicted for it at the be- ginning of the season. Two high points of the season were our three-point loss to champion South after having led the entire game and our one point tournament victory over strong Catholic Central. The team suffered a severe blow at mid-year when Carl Rosema graduated. With him went what little height we had and one of the league's three lead- ing scorers. Our fourth-place finish attests once again to the leadership, spirit, and un- derstanding of the game of our able coach. Va rslty Basketball Christian . . East Grand Rapids. Christian . . The Reserve Basketball team had a fairly successful season finishing with seven wins and five defeats in the City League for a third place. Each member of the team, having gained necessary experience, has hopes and dreams of making the Varsity team next year. We feel that the high point in our season was defeating Ottawa 62-44 at Burton gvm. Our managers, Don Kuipers and Don Koop- man deserve sincere thanks for their work. This also holds for our Whole student body who supported us so faithfully throughout the season. As Mr. Zwier leaves, we would like to thank him for his very capable coaching of the second team. ll' lst Row: R. Beute, D. Beuzekom, L. Blok, C. Boelkins, I. De Bie, B. Decker, I. DeGroot. L.
