You must have been looking forward to graduation. A sense of deep satisfaction should be yours because this is the realization of one of your ambitions. We of the Board extend hearty congratulations to each member of the classes of l954. The Association has placed upon the Board the mandate to maintain Grand Rapids Christian High School based on the Word of God. Being committed to the Reformed world and life view, the educational principles of the Association must therefore be distinctly Reformed in emphasis and character. Through the administration and the teachers the Board has tried to carry out that mandate. Your teachers' devotion to duty with the sacrifice of your parents plus the loyal support of our constituency have made that possible. Distinctive education has prepared you for your future whether that be in the home, a vocation of your choice, or at other educational institutions. The debt of gratitude you owe to the school as recipients should make you its ardent supporters. Upon you rests the future growth of Christian Education. We look to you to assume your share of the responsibility in the growth and expansion of Grand Rapids Christian High School. Secretary of the Board H. L. Homan, D.D.S. mI2. G. R. DOS11 Mr. E. R. Post has been a true friend during our stay here at Christian High. Always there as a counselor when we were in need of help and encouragement, he spurred us on to the point where we are now, that of graduating from the school which he so competently managed. We, as students, are grateful for the guidance which he gave us, and for the patience which he showed us in rather trying moments. Mr. Post has been a definite influence upon our Christian youth. 7 2-JT INR. m. li. O6 VROOITIE Known to all as our capable registrar, Mr. De Vroome has helped many of us choose our future vocations by guiding us to the proper courses. To him who has carefully and pains- takingly made up our schedules year after year, we owe a debt of gratitude. mm. J. p. hoekenoa Sooner or later every student at Christian High comes into contact with Mr. J. P. Hoek- enga. Respected by all, Mr. Hoekenga has ex- pressed his friendly attitude by his helpful ad- vice and iudicious council. Our aim is to give financial aid to the school and to promote Christian fellowship among women working for a mutual cause. The meetings are held the first and third Tuesday of every month during the school year. Many of the fall meetings are de- voted to preparing for the Christmas Bazaar. We have enioyed many fine programs with members of the Student Body participating in panel discus- sions and favoring us with instrumental and vocal music. And as we listen to these young people we are again reminded that we are working for a glorious purpose. The Work-Committee, Ways and Means Com- mittee, and the Hostess Dinner Committees have worked diligently in promoting hymn-sings, teas, rummage sales etc. with a fine spirit of co-operation. ' We deeply appreciate the support given us by our sponsor, Miss H. Zandstra and the faithful leadership of our President, Mrs. H. J. Mulder. This included eight wins and two losses in a pre-season tournament at Ferris Institute, five wins and three losses in the city league, four wins and four losses in the state league, and one loss in the state tournament. Because of its regular season record the team won the right to participate in the state tournament at Ann Arbor, but was defeated by a strong Hazel Park team. The team also debated before the student body in a special assembly. This year's topic was Resolved: that the Presi- dent of the United States should be elected by the direct vote of the people. We have studied the lives and works of the great composers. One of the most outstanding meetings was the one in which Mr. Donald D. Armstrong, from the Grand Rapids Symphony, spoke to us. Every year each of us subscribes to the Literary Cavalcade so that we may keep up with the best writing done by high school students in America. The purpose of our club is to teach aspiring radio operators how to become hams and how to operate ham equipment. The first step was learning the Morse International Code. Next, we learned the basic fundamentals of radio. To supplement our studies we made a trip through the telephone company, and saw a movie on the electron tube. Officers, left to right: John, Mr. Vander Lugt, Les, Mr. Vryhof -- standing:' Gord, Rog - sitting The aim of all of us in the club is the acquiring of a Novice Class Amateur Radio License. To qualify for this test we first have to pass the Fed- eral Communication Examination, which means more practice in the code and theory. ln future years the club hopes to have a school radio station where everyone can really be authentic radio hams. We would also like to express a word of appreciation to our sponsors, Mr. VanderLugt and Mr. Vryhof whose advice and direction were so helpful. JOHN NEWHOUSE KEN RITSEMA DAVE FLES LARRY MIENDERTSMA .rfb 1 BASKGIZBAU Christian High opened the basketball season with its traditional opener against East Grand Rapids. After a close first quarter our boys broke away and went on to a 42-23 victory. The next game saw the Eagles dispose of Godwin without too much difficulty. The next game was our first league encounter, against Central at their gym. The contest was close all the way with no team ahead by more than 5 or 6 points at any time. Central managed to gain a 2 point advantage when the final gun sounded and we lost our first game. Our team could not be kept dawn, however, and they bounced back against Catholic Central, and Creston with decisive victories. On Dec. 29 we played host to Holland Christian at our annual homecoming game in the Civic Audi- torium. The Eagles really rose to the occasion and broke the game open with a terrific third quarter. This game provided revenge for last year's defeats with our team winning before an excited audience. We stopped both South and Ottawa and then boarded a bus to go to Muskegon Heights. We put up a valiant fight but bowed before the powerful Heights for the second defeat of the season. In the next game Ed Start made his final appear- ance as a player at Christian and led our team to a resounding win over Union. Tension was now running high, the next game was with Central who had handed us our first loss. Our boys were really up for this game and exhibited their best form of the year. Everything worked to perfection and we gained revenge with a 57 to 37 victory. The Eagles then went on to defeat Creston, Catholic, South, and Ottawa as they began to smell the championship bouquets. Against Ottawa Tom Newhof set the city league season's record with 32 points. We now went to Holland to face the Maroons from Holland Christian once again in the second game of the series. Proving to be an exciting con- test from beginning to end, the score at the end of the game was deadlocked at 39 to 39, and went tension high but at the end of this period our boys were looking at a 39 to 4l score with a tired, sorry look in their eyes, but then it is said you can't always win. Shortly after the game we were noti- fied that Central had lost to South. Now only Union stood in our way to a championship. We were not to be denied, the next week we dumped Union and Coach Vryhof had again led his boys to a city league championship. As a warm up for the tournaments we engaged Kalamazoo Central and turned them back after an exciting game. In the regional tournaments we defeated Creston and Ottawa which scheduled us to play Muskegon Heights in the regional finals. Again we had a very fast game with both teams giving all they had. The score was close throughout the contest and the final gun sounded with Muskegon Heights ahead by 3 points. Thus the curtain fell on another very successful season as the Eagles again were perched on top of the city league basketball standings. The scores of the games are as follows: 42 23 Christian .... East Grand Rapids .... Christian 56 Godwin ........ 32 Christian Central .. .. . Christian Catholic ...... . Christian Creston ......... Christian Holland Christian Christian South .......... Christian Ottawa ........ Christian Muskegon Heights Christian Union .,..,,.,,, Christian Central ......... Christian Creston , Christian Catholic . Since the weather was favorable, we accomplished a great deal dur- ing our practice sessions. The team ran against six city schools, and also against Holland Christian. Although we did not win many contests, we showed much promise for next year, particularly in Ed Lapp, who finished among the tinest in the league. The season provided rough competition for the Christian High racketeers. Though at this writing the season is not com- pleted we hope that with the strength of three re- turning lettermen, a freshman squad loaded with talent, and under the leadership of coach Hoekstra we will be able to exchange our second place in the l953 city league standing for a first in l954. aol Back row: T. Future Nurses Club 'l, Christian Service Club 2 3 .,- V ' E 1 ptzesioenlfs aootzess Dear Friends: This program is called commencement because in being graduated from school we are encour- aged to look forward to the beginning of a life of service. Education is preparation for life and service, and we count it a privilege to have been trained at Christian High. A Christian education, more than any other, equips us to face and to meet the problems of our lives. Although we are looking forward tonight, because we have spent three years together at Chris- tian High, we shall often look back and we shall always cherish the memory of our high school days. When we entered this school, it seemed as though three years was a long time, but now that gradua- tion has come, we can hardly believe that our high school days are over. Tonight, as we are being graduated, we feel that at last some of our hopes are being realized. As we think of leaving this school, we realize that we have been greatly blessed in having the 'founda- tion of our education laid here. ln building a house, a most important part is the foundation. So too in building a life, the foundation is most important and we are grateful that our foundation has been a Christian education. We would like to express our gratitude to all those who have made this education possible. As a class we express our gratitude to the Faculty and the Administration for the guidance and direction so willingly and unselfishly given us and also to the Board for making our Christian education possible. Our class sponsors, Mr. Feyen and Mr. Stravers, deserve our sincerest and warmest thanks for iheir kindness and helpfulness throughout our three years at Christian. To our parents we say a sincere, Thank you, for your sacrifices in sending us to Christian High, and for your guidance throughout these early years of our lives. Above all we thank God for Christian High, for its ideals and aspira- tions, and for what it has done for us. To our fellow students and all whom we now leave behind at Christian High, we say with deep feeling, We'll not soon forget you. . And now as members of the class of January, 1954, we shall go our various ways. Some of us will be going on to school, some will probably be going into military service, and some will go to work. All of us will be going out to face the world. As we go we can do no better than to follow the words of our class text, Trust in the Lord with all thy heart, and lean not upon thine own understanding. Bob Bast FLOWER: Orchid. COLORS: Lavender and White. MOTTO: Forward and Upward as God Leads the Way.
