Even though bedridden for the greater part of his high school days he has possessed an optimism, perseverance and a firm belief in God that is truly remark- able. jack, we salute you. l 3 6? How well We remember the times We have been taught the threefold relation- ship of God, others, and ourselves, so aptly symbolized by the triangle. The purpose of the 1953 NIENIOIR is to show how this relationship exists at Christian. VVe are thankful to those who have taught us this, for we know that in order to live a rich and full life we must understand our true relationships. Gonfenli Swarm I. 5 Zzaufnmen 14. Dear Graduates: lfach member of the Board of Grand Rapids Christian High School heartily congratulates every one of the Classes Ol 1953 in your academic attainments at our school. Our chief objective, as representa- tives of your parents, has been to provide a thoroughly Christian Education. VVe are thankful for the devoted teachers, who were one with us in this ideal and have so faithfully performed their task. . lVlost of your class have now finished formal training and will enter various vo- cations, others will continue studies at institutions of higher learning. Prayer- fully We trust that all of you as God's covenant children have caught the mean- ing of this distinctive type of education with its great responsibilities. This large graduating group has a great potential, by God's grace, to perpetuate and develop Christian education in all its phases. Maintain an active interest, not only in this school but in the whole field of this endeavor. Display a zeal for loyal Christian education that even surpasses that shown by those who militate to main- tain a neutral secular education. VVhat you have received demands this and then God's Kingdom will be extended and His name Glorified. Farewell, best wishes, and God's bless- ing Classes of 1953! It requires hard work, devotion to duty, and the help of Cod. Gaining success can be compared to reaching the top of a tree. There are two ways to get to the top. One is by sitting on a SICICID and waiting until it grows into a tree. The other way is by climbing. I'pon the completion of our high school education we have begun the climb toward a successful life and we might say that we have now reached the lower branches. We can have the false notion when high school days are over that 'fwe have arrived . It is true that we have established the basis for further education, but the real task has just begun. That further education may be college and university or it may be the actual experience of a job. But whatever happens, the foundation is there and we are thankful that this foundation is not only an education but an education with a special meaning and background. We were taught to see God and His Glory in every phase of our life. This God-centered education was possible only because of the foresight of our fathers many years ago. They sacrificed TIME, MONEY and EFFORT and they are continuing that sacrifice so that a Christian High School education will continue to be available to the students of this community. We are not unmindful of the devotion of scores of teachers who have devoted their lives to teaching the covenant youth. VVhat a wonderful opportunity this class of '53 has had. Many of us will be faced with military service and this background of a Christian education will enable us to face circumstances to which we are unaccustomed. This will give us a better opportunity to let our light shine and be better Chris- tians and better citizens. As we continue the climb towards success we must constantly keep in mind that success must not be measured by the mere accumulation of wealth. But rather that success is a more noble attainment which can be measured by our devotion to duty, our willingness to sacrihce for our fellow men, and living to the glory of God. Our sponsors, Mrs. Haan and Miss Ten Broek, have been most helpful and cooperative during our years at Christian High and we thank them. We also express a special word of thanks to Miss Zandstra, Mr. Hoekenga and Mr. Post for their good advice and counsel, and we are deeply grateful to all of the teachers who have been so patient and understanding. As we are graduated, it is our hope that the guiding principle expressed in our class motto will be constantly in our mind, 'Success lies, not in achieving what you aim at, but in aiming at what you ought to achievew. We will achieve success if we follow the words of our class text: 'eTrust in Jehovah with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding . James Yan Kuiken, Prefiderzt Friends: For the Class of june, '53 this commencement exercise marks the high point of our years at Christian High. At least in some measure we feel that individually, we have succeeded. Perhaps we are inclined to boast and exaggerate our degree of attainment. Yet to us it is a significant thing to reach the goal for which we have long striven. At times we become pessimistic, questioning the value of an education. At other times we become optimistic, so optimistic in fact that we regarded school not as a threshold of learning. but a place where we could enjoy extra-curricular beneflts, often forgetting our purpose and aim. Those were times we all will remember. Still, it was perhaps in the striking of that happy medium, the medium of applying our abilities to the business at hand, that we found the greatest satisfaction. Thus, having tasted the sweetness of success, we once again look forward to greater achievements. For some, these achievements will take their form in fame, education, professional positions. For others they will be less tangible, less definable, perhaps more honorable. There are times too, when we will taste the bitterness of our struggle. Then, let us remember our class motto in which the poet Longfellow has stated so simply: Life if real, life if 6'61?'llE.YZ,' and the grave if not its goal. Dust thou art to dust returnext roar not Jpoleezz of the Joulf' Again, there will be times when we are optimistic, when life seems too good to be true. At this time, particularly, let us not forget our God who is the author of our measure of success, small though it may be. Now, in behalf of the Class, I would like to express our gratitude to the Board, Faculty, and Administration for the Christian guidance which they so willingly and unselfishly gave to us during our brief stay at Christian High. Our class sponsors, Mrs. Yer Hoef, Mr. Boogaart, and Mr. Vander Lugt, deserve a special note of appreciation for so ably assisting in directing the affairs of the class as an organization. To our parents, whose sacrihce and prayers have given our lives a richer meaning by affording us a God-centered education, we can only begin to express our thanks. But in the years ahead we hope to have opportunity to show them by our words and deeds that their concern and love for us has not been in vain. Finally, thanking our God above all, each of us must keep his vision hxed upon Him so that we may say with Paul in the words of the Class text, f'But one thing I do, forgetting the things which are behind and stretching forward to the things which are ahead, I press on toward the goal unto the prize 75 of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. 43 Bernard Jeltema, Prefident SWFJ IWW Gladd Uyicefm af fcanaafuf 1954 Left to right: Mr. Fcycn, Ed. Each of the members chosen on a per- centage basis from the junior and senior classes show consistant scholarship from the previous year. Grades must be above N average and continue to be above average in order to remain in the society. The Eagle Torchbearer chapter of Christian High belongs to the nation-wide society. Their in- teresting ideas andthe giving of their time to aid those girls interested in nursing has lltli grade: Pres. Beth Baas Vice Pres. Marg De Haan Sccy. June Postcma Trcas. Amy Tiddcns been advantageous to us and has been greatly appreciated. So that We might have a better and more realistic picture of the actual procedure ol' an important part of the work of a nurse, a trip to the Percy Jones Hospital was ar- ranged as a joint venture. Seeing brave men meeting and overcoming such serious handicaps makes us more resolute in our determination to be of the very best serv- ice to all. 77 Jia 'f lst Row - R. La Bom. D. Kuizcma. B. The cadet band, which has some thirty-two players, is the middle band or stepping stone to the concert band. Members of the cadet band are called upon to fill vacancies in the concert band as they occur. The ac- tivities of the cadet band include a daily practice of an hour or a marching drill outdoors when the Weather permits. The practice consists of Work with scales, marches, chorales, and overtures which will develop the player's ability to the level required for admission to the concert band. Director of the cadet band is Mr. Geerdes. Even though he directs the other two bands also, he uses tireless effort and patience to do an excellent job of making better musicians of all the players. Except when an occasional discord creeps in, the band plays very Well and the musicians have an enjoyable time reading the music together. The practice sessions were held under adverse Weather conditions but after several ses- sions a six man team was chosen. This year's team which is composed of four tenth graders shows a great interest in the game as is evidenced by their Willing- ness to practice many hours. This display of interest added to the grade level of the majority of the team makes the outlook in golf promising for this and succeeding seasons. It is hoped that golf will con- tinue to interest many in the student body and result in large turnouts each year and that all those who play golf in school will gain benefits of long While duration from their association with the game while at Christian High. The team plays its usual city league schedule of six matches with Holland Christian and one with East Grand Rapids. The regional tournament is the final event of the season and the team hopes that it can finish high enough to qualify for the state meet. 98 7em1u Back Row: Mr. Konyndyk, K. Bcttcn. B. Kooistra. D. The call for tennis tryouts drew a good turnout of twenty this spring. The boys were listed in tournament play with each other to display their skill and receive a few pointers. Weather conditions pre- vented any great accomplishment, but gave some idea as to the personnel that would round out a team of twelve. The team this year does have a good balance of experience and new men for future years. The boys that have made the team show interest and enthusiasm which should prove a reward both to the school and themselves for future years. At this writing we haven't pitted our racquets against any of the city schools, but we do have high hopes of battling down to the wire for one of the top positions.
