S3 i ln this new section of the 1956 Geep, we have striven to illustrate some of our activities in Geep High which are all in a day's work. CHEMISTRY Everyone is grateful for the opportuni- ties afforded by a modern Chemistry De- partment.such as ours. Chemistry students gain a valuable knowledge in both labora- tory experiments and classroom lectures. BIOLOGY In our biology classes students study sub- iects ranging from the' smallest of plant life to human anatomy. Since it combines the main elements of botany and zoology into one science, biology gives our students a general, practical knowledge of everyday things. l s l PuBLicATloNs The primary purpose of the Pub- lications Department is to serve the students of Geep High through the school paper, the Prairie Dog, and the annual, the Geep. The staffs of these two publications consist of stu- dents carefully selected by the ad- visor from iournalism and publica- tions classes on the basis of their qualifications. HOMEMAKING The homemakers of tomorrow can be found working and training for their im- portant task in Geep High's Homemaking Department. In studying sewing and cook- ing alternately, the girls acquire a well- rounded education in the art of managing a home. LIBRARY Every student has the privilege of using and enioying Geep High's excellent library. Our library caters to the needs and interests of high school students. Besides the many and varied books, periodicals, and news- papers which the library has, it also offers a variety of personal guidance booklets for student use. SPEECH ln addition to teaching the art of public speaking, our Geep High Speech Department endeavors to de- velop poise and self-assurance for leadership in future activities. DRIVER EDUCATION The purpose of Driver Education, a com- paratively new course offered in high schools, is to teach sate driving habits to beginning drivers in order to have a safer, better-trained generation of motorists using the nation's highways. TYPING Because of the popularity of typing as a course, our Typing Department is one of our largest departments. In all of the typing classes, accuracy is emphasized more strongly than speed, and as students earnestly try to attain accuracy, they attain speed as well. SHOP partment, boys learn to use mechani- cal machinery and hand and power tools safely and correctly. As well as giving the boys experience in the use ot tools which may be of value in future iobs, shop courses provide an interesting activity. ln our well-equipped Shop De- DEVOTIONAL Our high school devotional program is de- signed to develop, through inspirational guid- ance, high personal standards and leadership, as well as faith, tolerance, and understanding. Each morning the students and faculty of Geep High hear an inspirational devotional given by a member of the student body. 4 l CAFETERIA During five lunch periods each day, hundreds of Geep High students take ad- vantage of the well-balanced, nourishing meals served in our high school cafeteria. The specially planned menus give students an appetizing variety of meals each week. BOOKKEEPING Accounting and precision book- keeping are easily mastered by the students in our bookkeeping classes. With modern adding machines and their training to help them, Geep High bookkeepers are able to bal- ance their accounts easily. SHORTHAND Secretary is the title toward which the girls in the shorthand classes are work ing. Taking dictation and transcribing, the girls are being groomed for their iobs as secretaries of tomorrow ii ti PHYSICAL EDUCATION Geep High has an educational program which calls for physical as well as mental development. This need is carried out by our P.E. Department. Each year the P.E. Depart- ment plans a full program ot activity which in clucles everything from tumbling and volley- ball to folk and square dancing. X. PHYSICS Awakening interest in science and training scientists for the future are two aims of our Physics Department. Geep High students are fortunate to have a physics department which has such modern, excellent equip- ment for use in the classroom. fuss ' XX im' noNs -...L ,f V .Ax., A i 1:1 W H N es x 5 I ,.., N .,,,,, ,W,f,.?A,mM ? Second row: Coach Gerald Wallace, Longacre, Smith, Langford, McDonald, Sandlin, Dickey, Avery, Coach Amos Turner. Third row: Jenkins, Spruiell, Cox, Schroeder, Holley, Bailey, Heller, Standfield. James. B TEAM REVIEW HIGHLAND PARK B -38 GOPHERS B -O Playing the first game of the season at Highland Park was too much for the young Gophers. They were completely outclassed by a fine Scottie team, who were in mid-season shape. Ronnie Langford played an outstanding game for the Gophers. B GOPHERS-26 GARLAND B -I 3 Playing at home for the first time, the Gophers soundly defeated Garland. Pat Rigby called an outstanding game. Screen passes to David Hunt were most successful, and counted for two touch- downs. The whole squad showed class in the game. DENTON B -33 B GOPH ERS-O Denton had too much speed for the young Goph- ers. It was one of those nights when nothing goes right. The boys did their best, but they were no match for Denton's speedy attack. SUNSET B -20 GOPHER B -7 Mud and superior weight proved to be more than the Gophers could handle, although they stayed in the game until the last minute. ARLINGTON B -24 GOPHER B -I 9 Long runs and sharp passing were the highlights of the see-saw battle. Pat Rigby's fine 60 yard scamper and David Hunt's 84 yard kickoff return were the feature plays of the game. GOPHER B -27 IRVING B -O Scoring the first time they had the ball, the Gophers went on to post a fine team victory. Vicious line play was the keynote of the game. GOPHER B -I 4 JESUIT B -6 The Gophers took a close win in this rough and tumble affair. Jesuit had the best defense faced by the young Gophers all season. CLEBURNE B -24 GOPHER B -I 4 Bad breaks and heavy penalties cost the Gophers this game. They played their best game of the season, but something always stopped them. 1 ffwfvf-df-sv' . BASKETBALL SWEETHEART NORTH TEXAS TOURNAMENT QUEEN Shirley Lackey THE VICTORIOUS GOPHERS CALL TIME OUT FOR INSTRUCTIONS In compiling a brilliant 22-6 record for the season and twelve consecutive district wins without a loss, the Gophers shattered several 2-AAA records. The I955-56 Gophers were the highest scoring aggregation in the short history of 2-AAA with an astounding 78.4 points per game. But the Gophers didn't stop with the offensive records, they also led the conference on defense by allowing their opponents only 50.2 points per game. The IO9 points run up against Weatherford was another district first and possibly an all-time high for 2-AAA. No other team has ever gone through twelve district contests without at least one defeat. In bi-district play, the best basketball team in Gopher history rallied in the last half to defeat the towering Palo Duro Dons of Amarillo on the Geep High court in the first game of the two out of three series. Although the battling Gophers drove hard, the Palo Duro Dons were victorious in the last two games and won the bi-district series. 5, 1. Qs 1 In K ' Q . 3 H i 5 gg :SM 5-if 'Y Y M? K ,1,-Famif ,.
