Third row: Mikeska, Stermer, Whitus, Glass, Baker, Holtman, Reeves, james, Sanders, Taylor, Coach Amos Turner. FOOTBALL REVIEW HIGHLAND PARK B -30 GOPHER B -O Opening the season with only three days of practice the B Gophers fell before the Scots 30-0. The Scotties dominated play all the way. The Gophers fought hard but were not ready for a team of the Scot's caliber. B GOPHERS-13 CLEBURNE B -13 Although the young Gophers completely dominated the play in all phases, Cleburne managed to score a tying touchdown in the final minutes. Outstanding Gophers were Stanley Farmer, Roland Williams, james Cassels, Alvin Dalton, and Gene Baker. B GOPHERS-35 ARLINGTON B -O The BH team was ready for the neighboring Arl- ington Colts and sent them back home with a 35-0 beating. The blocking was crisp, tackling hard, and the ball carrying was good. B GOPHERS-39 PLEASANT GROVE B -13 A favored team from Pleasant Grove came to Gopher Stadium expecting to take home a victory. Instead it turned into a riot for the Gophers. Using both the TH and' spread formations the young Gophers gained almost at will. BH GARLAND-7 GOPHER B -6 Playing at Garland on a rain soaked field, Garland staved off a final thrust by the blue and white to win 7-6. Highlight of the game was the play by the Gophers to hold Garland on the six inch line in the fourth quarter, then taking the ball and marching all the way to the Owl one yard line only to lose the ball on downs. MBU GOPHERS-39 JESUIT B -26 In a wide open offensive game, Grand Prairie turned back jesuit 39-26. The score at the half was 13-6, Gophers leading. In the second half both teams scored almost at will, with two intercepted passes setting up two of the Gophers scores. B GOPHERS-21 IRVING B -O Playing hard and vicious all the way, the Gophers frailed their old rival 21-O. Outstanding Gophers were Alvin Dalton, Larry Glass, James Cassels, Doyle Reeves, Stan Farmer, Gene Baker, Roland Williams, and jon Mike Lewis. THE GO WAYNE HENSLEE LYNN O'NEIL DUDLEY CHAMBERS Senior-6'0 A three year letterman-Dudley did a fine job of bringing the ball down the floor, and of set- ting up playst He was not a high scorer but was responsible for a lot of points with his fine passing and level headed play. It will be hard to replace him. BOBBY CHASTEEN Senior--6'2V2 A fine competitor and one of the most hustling boys ever to wear the blue and white. Bobby always gave his best whether in practice or a game. Outstanding on defense and a fine re- bounder. His fierce determination to win was a big factor in the upswing of basketball at G.P.H.S. JACKIE CRAWFORD Junior-6'6 With only one year of experience, Shorty did an outstanding job. A genuine love for the game and a desire to improve should make him a very outstanding boy next year. His ability to shoot a variety of shots made him the leading scorer of the Gophers. SAMMY FOUNTAIN junior-6'0 Probably the most improved boy on the squad. Sammy earned a starting position about the middle of the season. A fine rebounder a good defensive player, and good shooting made Sammy a valuable asset. DENNIS KOUTH Senior-5'9 A fine shooter and a knack for stealing the ball made Mouse one of the Gopher starters. His only handicap was a lack of size. He will be remembered for his' outstanding play in the Brownwood game. He will be missed next year. JACK MCGAHEE Senior+5'10 A fine attitude and desire to play made jack a fine. team man. He was a good all-round player. It is always hard to replace a boy of this type. CHARLES MCKINZIE junior-6'2 Charles did not see much action due to an injury early in the season. He will be counted on next year to do a fine job. KENNY ROBINSON Sophomore-6'2 Kenny has the size and ability to be a star before he graduates. He did not play much as a sopho- more, but not very many do. The future is very bright for him on the hardwood court. CARLYLE SMITH Sophomore-6'0 Carlyle showed flashes of outstanding play dur- ing the season. It is felt that the confidence and constancy that comes with experience will make him an outstanding boy before he graduates. ALEX TAPP Senior-6'0 A very fine attitude and good knowledge made Sonny a valuable player. He could always be counted on for more than his share of rebounds and he was a constant scorer. He will be missed. DAVID TEEL Sophomore-5'7 The scrapping and hustling type of boy is always looked for by a coach. This definition fits David. He is a fine ball handler and defensive player. His fine competitive spirit should make him a fine player before he graduates. HORACE THOMPSON Sophomore-6'1 Possessing a cool head and fine one hand push shot should make Pete a fine prospect for the next two years. With more experience he should become an outstanding player.
