A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A GOPHER Somehow I had got lost Before me stood a buuldung lookung as though ut were about to burst at the seams I hopped up the sudewalk and went unsude All was quuet Not a soul was about Suddenly a bell clanged doors opened and students flew out of the rooms and unto the hall My goodness' Such confusuonl Such nousel Nothung luke thus ever happened un Gophertown I learned later that they were merely changung classes whuch was an hourly occurence When every thung had become quuet once more I saw many students crowded unto each room In Gophertown classes are not so crowded but un Gophertown there us no Gulmer Auken euther Before l had funushed my exploratuon another bell rang and students pushed unto the lunch room to enuoy a lunch of mulk mashed potatoes peas salmon croquettes and uce cream A lunch un Gophertown uncludes root luuce mashed luly buds grass salad ruut meat and frozen chlorphyll When lunch was over I decuded to look at the kund of scenery these Geep Hugh students see every day To the west and south there were houses To the east was a pretty vuew of trees and hulls stretchung toward the horuzon Lookung north I spotted Gopher Stacluum the place where the 51 football team beat the Greenvulle Tugers to become the dustruct champs The boys really had a team I wandered unto the lubrary and pucked up a copy of the 52 annual THE GEEP The furst thung I saw as I leafed through was the faculty puctures Somehow a school lust wouldnt be a school wuthout teachers around The Geep Hugh faculty seemed to be especually wonderful a group of very understandung people Stu dents wull look back someday and thank Mrs Hught for her tests Mrs Vuneyard for her endless vocabulary lusts Mr Garruson for hus current events and Mr Combs for hus neverfaulung kundness Next came the classes The senuors wuth theur experuence and put on sophustu catuon lead the rest of the student body In spute of theur outer confudence how ever they unwordly quake at the thought of commencement and of beung pushed out unto the adult world The Junuors now thoroughly aduusted to Iufe un Geep Hugh are preparung to take the lead un student actuvutues and are lookung forward to beung Senuors next year The Sophomores largest class ever to enter Geep Hugh are learnung to love the school as theur frue-nds the Juntors and Senuors do From the three classes come varuous outstandung personalutues As I leafed through the book I notuced the Whos Who the class favorutes the senuors pucked most fruendly best all around most popular most Iukely to succeed and the beautuful football queen Tawana Clark The I952 basketball squad although not the best un the world showed the ever present fughtung Gopher spurut and formed he basus for an even better team un future years Geep Hughs organuzatuons help to balance the students scholastuc Iufe The band and chour best un many a year represented the school un a way whuch made everyone proud of them The student councul governung body of the school helped buuld up a happuer place un whuch to work and study Other organuzatuons such as the D E club the publucatuon staffs and the Future Homemakers Club rounded off the extracurrucular program and auded students un learnung to take responsubuluty and make decusuons Funally I came to the ads There were many of them and I thought how well the Grand Praurue busmessmen supported the hugh school students I closed the 1952 Geep and sat reflectung Geep Hugh was fruendly uts student body was co operatuve and the faculty was understandung but I decuded that Gophers belong un Gophertown Puttung the book back I hopped down the staurs and out the door I looked back It was a nuce place thus Grand Praurue Hugh and wuth a feelung of sadness un my heart I left ut never to return If Z ff C ' ' I I I 1 I .
