P. 14 McKinney 14 Carl Thames, Wesley Flinn, mm of 19401 IQSO Grand Prairie Football Season got under way at 8 O0 P M September 9 1949 when the Gophers upset the Gainesville Leopards 26 to 7 Gainesville s only marker came late in the second quarter, while the Gophers landed a score in all four quarters Two con versions were made for Grand Prairie, and one for Gainesville A special tram was chartered for Grand Prairie fans to watch the Gophers overcome the Gladewater Bears for a 12 to 6 victory Grand Prairie scored in the first quarter, but the second quarter was a see saw battle until the Bears chalked up their only score Spectacular running and blocking made possible the fmal Gopher score in the last minute and a half of the game Both teams attempts for conversions failed The Substitutes got a fair workout while the regulars rode the bench when our Gophers smashed the Cisco Lobos 59 to 0 Two touchdowns were made in the first few minutes of the game, and the bout ended with the Gophers knocking at the Lobo s door again The Gophers were successful in five out of nine attempts for conversions The Gophers chalked up their fourth consecutive non conference win by beating the Bonham Warriors 47 to O The whole game was in Grand Prairie s hands, for most of the regulars occupied the bench again that week and as did they the week before Cl.ooking at the score will answer whether the substitutes could pinch hit or notlj Our Gophers kept their record clean when they romped the Crozier Tech Wolves for their fifth straight victory Scormg in every quarter, Grand Prairie marked up 41 points to Tech's 13 At the half the score was 27 to 6 and the third and fourth quarters saw the Gophers almost double their first halfs tally The Wolves completed one out of two attempts for conversions, and the Gophers five out of six With hard running and beautiful blocking, those Gophers marched down the field again in their sixth game of the season to throw the Mineral Wells Mountaineers for losses time after time The Grand Prairie boys gave a plain NO ' to every attempt the Mountaineers made to gain yardage The scoreboard read 18 to 0 at the forty eight minute whistle with Grand Prairie, as usual, on the scoring end As all the non conference games were just warm ups for this mighty eleven s con ference games, all eyes now turned with expectancy toward the climax game of the season to be played on the night of November 4 1949 the big night for the Gophers Defeat of the Highland Park Scotties literally would mean the winning of the District Title and starting the Gophers on their way to state championship As Fate would have it the Go ers outplayed the Scots in all except scoring points' the Scotties scored one more touchdown than the Gophers But to the now champs of the District, the Gophers gave all the credit deserved for a hard fight won Actually, the Gophers had a second District Win in 8AA Conference play when they shellaced the Denton Broncos 34 to O Scoring once each in the first three quarters, and twice in the fourth quarter, our Gophers re-proved an already proven statement that they were the REAL champs even though the last week s scoreboard slated differently Four out of five attempted conversions were completed The Pinch hitters were too much for the crippled Sulphur Springs Wildcats, for the regulars offered little help in running the score up 'S points to the Wildcats 6 Every Gopher play clicked -- even the center played fullback! A badly crippled Gopher team journeyed to McKinney on Turkey Day to manage their only tie of the season' the score, 14 to 14 It was a sad day for twenty-three Senior Gophers, for it was the last time those twenty three would don the blue and white to bring glory back to Geep High But out of this incomparable twenty-three boys, four were selected to receive All District laurels, and one of those four was invited to play in the All-Star Game of 1950! Gophers, we need not say we re proud of you, for your town, district, and state have already done more than take pride in you, We are more than proud, for we know that there are none better than the 1949-1950 Gophers! esume 06 flue qfzand fzaifzie Qopliefz 'fooflm Ph . f 1 a , l I flrfgfmfy A K t Q I N VK K A :Y I I wa rf 'I .
