Text from Pages 1 - 108 of the 1986 volume:

We, the 1986 yearbook staff, dedicate our yearbook to Larry Ziebell (March 17, 1934-June 26, 1985) in appreciation for his 23 years in our school system and community. The following exerpt was given by George Colbenson at his funeral. Larry was a real profes- sional in the very best sense of the word. He ex- pected and demanded a lot from his students because he hated to see people waste their abilities and talents. In class he would often use the expression, 'I'll be honest with you' and he always was, because he felt that part of his job was to help them become responsible citizens and members of the communi- ty- Larry was more than just a teacher. He was also a very active member of the com- munity. He was a very prominent member of the American Legion. He was a man who loved and was very proud of his country and her flag. He was a very strong supporter of the Boys Scouts and the Girl Scouts. Larry was a loving hus- band and father. He showed his love for them and his pride in them every day of their lives. March 17, 1934 - June 26, 1985 THE 1986 Larry never did anything to make him famous and his name will never appear in any of the history books that he used to teach from, but there are hundreds of people who are better off today because they knew a man who they called Zeeb and Lark. COACH'S CORNER 1985 was the second consecutive year that our team competed in the state playoff tournament series. This past season there were many ups and downs with injuries hampering our fall potential at crucial times. The team finished a very respectable 5-5 against, as usual, some tough football opponents. This team learned to play as a group, and to overcome adversity through team and individual de- sire to excel. Seven players were honored during the season on the KFIL team of the week. Tyler Glynn, Craig Monnier, Jason Benson, Chad Bothun, Mike Smith, Troy Gilbert, and Glenn Simes. Next season there will be 13 letterman returning, with the pros- pect of a winning season if we can dedicate the off season and summer to preparation for our goals. Championship football teams are built in the off season not during the season, and we can become a championship football team with hard work. Once again we have to wish farewell and good luck in the future to a great bunch of senior who I personally thank for all of their dedication to our football team; Jason, Chad, Craig, Terry, Mike, Jim and Robert have truely become fine young men through their exper- iences on the football field. Their 13 wins broke the school record by one. Seniors Shelley Fabian, Ann Stier, and Lael Stier provided the leadership that allowed the Larks a second place finish in the Maple Leaf Confer- ence. Shelley set a school and district tournament record with 18 ace attacks in a match. Ann provided strong net play and Lael proved to be a consistent server. Juniors Amy Rieger, Nancy Steinkamp, Sheila Hanson, and Jodi Westphal added their special talents to the success of the Larks. Amy set a season record for points scored by serving for 213 points. Nancy consistently set the ball for the hitters and Sheila and Jodi provided their special skills when needed. Sophomores Mary Ackerman and LuAnn DeWall provided hitting strength at the net. Mary also served a record 64 straight serves over the net. All nine girls should be proud of all their achievements this past year. They all worked hard for the success of the team! Coach Carlson 1. Chris ended the year with an outstanding 30-0 record. An- other highlight was the promise of the Junior High Wrestlers as four of them earned varsity letters. As a dual meet squad, GMLO ended just under 500 however with ten returning lettermen the squad appears to be set for a great future. Competing without two weights, the squad still earned third at the Ellen- dale tournament, fourth at the Harmony Tournament, second at our own G.M. Tournament, and qualified eight Wres- tlers for Regionals. Through hard work we reached many goals and if our Wrestlers continue to improve the stage is set for a great future. A tough non-conference schedule counted for 7 of the 10 losses and an overtime loss at LeRoy while playing short handed cost the conference championship. Injuries took a starter out 9 times during the season. With everyone back at district tournament time, the team proved to be very competitive as they lost by 2 points to eventual runner-up Freeborn. The Larks had four players that averaged in double figures in scoring: Mike Smith 12.4, Chris Hopp 12.1, Jason Benson 11.4, and Cray Benson 10.6. Terry Nelson showed great leadership in running the team when Chris was injured. Sophomore Deke Stejskal showed by his play that he'll have a bright future. Jason and Mike led the team in rebounding with 9 and 8 per game. Jim Steinkamp and brother Robert contributed their own special talents to the team. Jason was voted MVP for the 1986 season and his brother Cray was most improved. Jarred Nesbitt was voted the Superlark Award. All in all, it was a successful season for the Larks: 2nd in confer- ence, 3rd at Spring Valley Holiday Tournament and 11-10 overall. Thanks - Al Carlson 1. 2. 3. 4 5. 6. The 1986 track season was one with lots of rain and wind, it is lucky that the team performed better than the weather. The team won the conference once again. This team had 4 seniors, Mike Smith who had placed in the state and won 4 events in most of the meets, Craig Monnier who placed in conference and also ran on 2 relay teams, Jason Benson who has won the district in shotput and discus, and Jeff Weisz was out for the 1st time and in 800 in conference. These seniors will be hard to replace, the underclassmen added depth and will be the ones that take over for the seniors. Juniors are Chris Hopp doing hurdles, long jump and triple jump. Jarred Nesbitt distance, Tyler Glynn who was hurt. Sophomores Jim Kjeer and Scott Kerrins in distance and Glenn Oehlke in weights. Freshmen are Eric Ottman dis- tance, James Wytaske sprint, Eric Myhre weights, Chris Stier distance. 8th grade Jon Oehlke all distance Shannon Ostby weights, Erik Diskrud hurdles.
