THE MEADOWLARK Bditors Georgia Peterson Co-Bditors: Karen Holland Charolette Johnson : J.B. Skellenger Advisor: DecUcaXco4€ A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops. Henry Brooks Adams We, the Seniors of 1962, are proud to dedicate our yearbook to Mr. William Severin—-an active par- ticipant in civic and community affairs—an inspiration to seniors past, present, and future—a true credit to the teaching profession. Our high school days will best be remembered through the symbols each of us has made in our minds for those things which are most important. The idea of a cap and gown may represent the end of high school to us just as a mountain of books and papers could remind us of the beginning. And in between these dif- ficult times, each of us look for that symbol of a friend who did so much to help, in the minds of a vast number of Grand Meadow's students and graduates, Mr. Severin is that symbol of a friend. To Grand Meadow High itself, he has been a true friend. In the hope that this tribute can satisfy a debt of gratitude, we wish to offer him an expression of appreciation for his tireless efforts in our behalf. To you, Mr. Severin, we respectfully dedicate the 1962 Meadow Lark as a symbol of our thanks. i s-„ eniord JUDY ANN BABBITT BONITA CHERYL CLARK Bonnie WAYNE ALVIN DOTZENROD Dotz GARY JEROME EDLAND Gabe DARRYL JON HAGEN Hagen RICHARD JON KEIM Dick MERLE EUGENE KNUTSON Knutson e. When special events take place at school, the cooks are always ready to go out of their way to fix a fine meal for our guests. When the time comes to go to our away games, the bus drivers take over gladly and drive us safely to and from the games. 0D'UWl6 First Row: Rodney Burrington, Carl Peterson, Elton Myhre, Lee Simonson. The Larks won their fourth consecutive Southland Conference championship and extended their victory string to fifteen. Co-captain Dennis Lorenzen was one of the teams outstanding defensive performers this season. Jim Glynn also did a fine job and shows great promise for next years team. Duane Kennedy, 180 pound fullback, scored eleven touchdowns in our first four games, and was also a standout linebacker on defense. The other starting backs were Merle Knutson, Darryl Hagen, and Herb Hanson. Our two biggest tackles, Wayne Dotzenrod and Ron Peterson, did a fine job this year. Ron is a Junior and will be on the team next year, also. Coach Bill Severin is proud and happy to report that his team has now won 33 of the 34 games played in the last four years. The team is going to be out working again next year to bring home another Southland Conference trophy! The Grand Meadow oand did a great job this year marching during the half- time of the games and cheering the team on to victory from the sidelines. It has been brought to our attention by numerous members of the faculty, the student body, and the community that the Grand Meadow Band made the finest showing of all the bands in the conference this year I Barbara Milbum, Nancy Stejskal, Penne Twitchell, Polly Twitchell, Mary Anderson. The football cheerleaders did an outstanding job this year to cheer our boys on to eight successive victories. These girls were at every game, regard- less of the weather, and led the student body and fans in supporting the team. If you watched the band's half-time performances at the football games, you couldn't help but notice the superb job the majorettes did on the field. They also looked very fine leading our Homecoming Parade. J?C zjonette Barbara Milburn, Polly Twitchell, Gail Simes, Eldene Miller, Carol Jones. Their fine 13-0 record showed what a victory-minded team with spirit and ability can do. In the process of securing this title, the aggressive Larks top- pled such strong foes as Chatfield, Spring Valley, and Harmony. We had four finalists in the Conference Wrestling Tournament held at Chatfield. They all placed first and were as follows: LaVern Mathison 112, Dennis Lorenzen 138, Bob Olson 154, and Ron Peterson 175. Others placing were Jim Mathison 95, taking third; Edward Raustad 120, fourth place, and Herb Jensen 145, fourth place, and Wayne Dotzenrod HWT, third place. The whole team placed third with a score of 68. We had four fellows in the District Tournament finals at Austin. They were LaVern Mathison, Denny Lorenzen, Bob Olson, and Ron Peterson, each finishing second, but advancing on to the regional contest. Others placing were Edward Raustad, placing fourth, John Joyce, placing fourth, Hugo Zell, placing third. Of those who advanced, LaVern Mathison and Ron Peterson each placed third. Dennis Lorenzen was considered by the Conference coaches to be the most outstanding and aggressive wrestler in the Conference. Needless to say, we are proud of all the boys on our Wrestling team! BAND QUEEN: Sharon Yonkovich The 1961 Homecoming festivities started out on a grand note on Thursday, October 5. The band played Hail Minnesota as the six Seniors hopefully walked up to the stage where Darryl Hagen and Nancy Stejskal were crowned King Darryl I and Queen Nancy I. As a final touch, the new King end Queen repeated after Jerry Jacobson the new Homecoming pledge. The spirit ran high as the students in the snake dance followed the band to the bonfire where speeches were given and cheers were led by our ener- getic cheerleaders. As the ashed of the bonfire slowly burned down, Fridsy dawned bright and warm. Floats were hurriedly finished and at two p.m. the parade began. The floats and other entries were judged and results announced. Friday night our battling Larks overran the Lyle Lions with a score of 30 to 0. The band entertained at half time by honoring the king 8nd queen and their attendants. The final climax to the Homecoming festivities was the dance held immediately after the game. Dick Chafe and his band were on hand to serenade all who were at the dance. All who participated in the Homecoming for 1961 agree that it was the finest and most beautiful Homecoming Grand Meadow h8s ever had.
