Smith, Florence Williamson, Beatrice johnson, HI TUHY In the fall of 1948, 55 Voyageurs fgraduates of '52j began our journey. We knew there was no elevator to success so-we took the stairs. In the first step of our journey, Hilding Bjorklund was chief canoe carrier, Gladys Creech, scribe, Gladys Nelson, chief bill collector, and joe Hussey, council member. Gerry McCabe and Tom Fuller took turns as paddle carriers. In the course of this step we were initiated into the Royal Order of Fur Carriers. Delores Croft was chosen to represent us in the Royal Beauty Contest. fHomecoming.j The second step of the journey was reached and we continued on our way. During this step of the journey, joe Hussey was chief canoe carrier, james Hill, assistant canoe carrierg Lizabeth Backlund, scribeg Kathy Kenna, chief bill collectorg and james Walker, council member. j. Paul johnson and Violet Hansey were chief paddle carriers. joAnn Brazell represented us in the Royal Beauty Contest. The Voyageurs, climbing steadily, reached the third l 8 step. The chief canoe carrier was james Walkerg assist- ant canoe carriei, james Blackwell, scribe, Gladys Creech, chief bill collector, Lizabeth Backlundg and council mem- ber, joe Hussey. The chief paddle carriers were Charles McCoy and Ruth Blackwell. Gladys Nelson represented us in the Royal Beauty Contest. During one portage of this journey we stopped for rest and entertainment. The enter- tainment took the form of a farce comedy just Ducky un- der the direction of Charles McCoy and in the hands of a very worthy cast and staff. Continuing along this step we encountered the 1951 Voyageurs in their journey and bid them come to the Lusten Resort where we served them a luscious banquet, during which many line speeches were made. After the meal, everyone adjourned to the dance floor where we danced to the music of a line orchestra and to the theme of Moonlight and Roses. We then stepped out and said good-bye to our old friends, the 1951 Voyageurs. l BETTY JANE BACKLUND KHU I1 ll 1' Gmfflmlej A charming girl is Betty, stead- fast in thought, friend to ,ill and does what she ought. HISTORY, Continued The fourth step of the journey was reached and the fur carriers had dwindled to 55. james Walker was chief canoe carrier, james Hill, assistant canoe carrier, Gladys Creech, scribe, and Lizabeth Backlund, chief bill collector. Byron johnson and Robert Tharp were chief paddle car- riers. During this step we were given the honor of initiating the 1955 Voyageurs into the Royal Order of Fur Carriers. XVe were represented in the Royal Beauty Contest by Kathy Kenna. An- other member of our party, joAnn Brazell, was bestowed with the great honor of becoming queen and reigned royally during the remainder of the fourth step. Again we saw the need of enter- tainment so we stepped off at another portage where we again put on a farce comedy, Love Is Too Much Trouble, under the direction of Dorothy Hochstetler. Once again the cast and staff did a fine iob. One day when things weren't going too well, the Voyageurs decided we needed a rest, so took a one-day vacation from the duties of our journey. As we were walking quietly up the road of life, we heard a loud hello, It was none other than our very dear friends, the 1953 Voyageurs, who had been following us up the road to invite us to a banquet at the East Bay Hotel and to stay over for the prom at the school house. As we left, we thanked the i953 Voyageurs, waved a fond good-bye and, continued on to the fifth step of our journey. Yes, we have reached the fifth step, but even so, we have not reached the ultimate success we have been searching for. must continue slowly on up the road of life, for we realize more than ever, There is no elevator to success, take the stairs. Conlinlzetl on Page 16 PRUPHECY The year is 1962, The Grand Marais class of 1952 is holding its reunion in the new Grand Marais High School. This was the last class to graduate from the old school down town, so it marks an important day for the class of 1952. As we walk into the large auditorium, we see some of our classmates already here. There is JIM the corner. He has a repu- late for anything. He really the world. In the past ten BLACKXWELL over in tation for never being worked himself up in years, he has become a millionaire executive. JEROME BRANDT has come down out of the woods for this big occasion. He is the owner of the Brandt Fur Market. With him is his assist- ant, JOHN SCHUPPEL, who knows all about trapping and hunting. Vile see JACK NYLUND and DICK BERG- LUND, ace detectives, enter the door. They saved their money for ten years to buy themselves a little gun and shoulder holster, Wfith them is their private secretary, SHIRLEY HENDRICKSON. I hear that she earns quite a bit of money in the detective business. Here comes another early bird. DIANE JOHN- SON is merchandiser for a big dress firm in Florida. Right behind her is CAROL OLSON, who is a famous dress designer. Both are dressed to the height of fashion. Now the nurses are entering in a group. They are: GLADYS NELSON, FLORENCE XWILLIAM- SON, JO ANN BRAZELL, ELIZABETH BACK- LLTND, BETTY JANE BACKLUND. and SONJA JENTOFT. They have all become full-fledged members of the Bed Pan Brigade. It took them ten years to obtain this high honor. Gladys is soon to become the wife of an Isle Royale fisherman, so will quit the nursing profession. Jo Ann is still going with a sailor, yust as she was back in 1952. Even though the weather is fine. VIRGINIA NELSON walks in wearing ski-togs. She just flew in for the reunion from Sun Valley where she is employed as ski-bum. NEIL McGIVERIN just came in the door. He is an instructor on square dancing in the thriv- ing metropolis of Beaver Bay. GLADYS CREECH, who is the commercial teacher in the new school, is coming in the door. I believe she left her husband at home with the twelve children. In 1952, l.er husband was in the Navy. With Gladys is DELORES CROFT, who teaches the first grade in the new school. You would be amazed at how much Delores has grown in the past ten years. She has now obtained the height of five feet, eight inches. GERRY NELSON and CHARLES BACKLUND are now entering. Gerry repairs all the television sets for the new school, and Charles is the master plumber. They came in their work clothes. BOB SUTHERLAND just slinked in the door. I hear from reports that he married a whale of a woman, and now is the most henpecl-:ed man in town. I7 What are all these children doing here? Oh, they must belong to MELVA SMITH. Her husband is out playing basketball, so she had to bring them with her. Here come two men in uniform. My goodness! It is JIM HILL and GERALD PEDERSEN. I hear by the grapevine that they have remained buck privates for the past ten years. PALMER BERGLLTND, of the Berglund Truckers just came in. It is hard to get him away from that new truck of his. He is walking over toward the darkest corner. What is he doing! Just like old times, he leans on a desk and falls asleep. JOE JOHNSON, in his Captain's uniform, iust came in. He has been working on the Great Lakes since the St. Lawrcnce Seaway came in. We see he is chewing a match as usual. SHARON PETERSON, the world famous traveler has gust returned from her tour of Africa where she collected many specimens which she has agreed to display at the meeting. Her safari party was made up of members of the 1952 Finland Air Base. BEATRICE JOHNSON, who teaches Beaver Bay, just tip-toes in the door. She has been ballet in teaching ballet and tap dancing for the past ten years. JIM WALKER gust flounced in. As usual, he heads for the corner where Florence is standing. Jim is now a mechanic for the taconite plant in Beaver Bay. JOE HUSSEY, the famous basketball 1952, is now a well known lawyer. Joe still isn't married, and we are beginning to wonder if he ever will. RONALD OLSON just flew in from his re- sort in Alaska. He went up there originally for a vacation, but had so much fun hunting and fishing that he decided to stay and open a resort. After the reunion, many of the group are flying up to his resort for a vacation. GLENN CLEMONS, who is a mechanic in the Army, lust came in wearing his uniform of a certainly worked himself up in a player of General. He hurry. Maybe he has a girl waiting for him. DONALD took over his lionaire. The LINDQLTIST is now entering. He service station and now is a mil- gas station really paid off, I hear. Here comes a lumberiack. My goodness! I didn't recognize GERALD PARENT behind that beard. He looks like he hasnt shaved for the past ten years. Here comes Kate. nine years, KATHY gre-e in Psychography the Swish-Swish Soap bing demonstrator. This brings to a close the reunion of the Class of 1952. It appears that the thirty-five seniors of 1952 have done quite well for themselves. As we leave them, they are busy planning another re- union for the year 1972. What a year . . . our class has worked to one end, the junior-Senior Prom and Banquet. We breezed into our junior year by sponsoring the winning candidate in the Homecoming Celebration. A quick look in our Treasury revealed that it was mighty low and so, racking our brains for new ideas to hll the mint, we used our super-salesmfanship and ingenuity to sell basketball pencils and autograph books . . . one look at our bulging balance proved the fact that we had pulled our Treasury on its feet again. Still not satisfied we ventured further into the financial field which included pop corn selling, and a very successful bake sale. Let us not forget our trials and tribulations over the school paper, deadlines to meet, inky noses, advisors' threats, gossip column cut up by censor's scissors, and last minute corrections till at last Papers Out! Along toward the middle of the year our energetic, athletic girls coped with the Seniors and the Sophomores to come up with the much-prized basketball trophy. After a heated discussion and a few ruffled tempers the class chose the comedy play, Here Comes Charlie, well-fitted to our class and designed to give our still insecure financial position the push to put on the Prom and Banquet. On the nights of the twenty-fourth and twenty-fifth of April, we presented the junior Class play- Here Comes Charlie. judging from the reaction of the audience and the ringing of the till, the play was a minor success. The goal toward which we had all been working came on May fifth when the Junior Senior Banquet was given. The banquet was a typical junior venture, all in all being a tremendous success. Following came the Prom on the tenth of May. Vfhat a brilliant show of splendor. The juniors really proved their worth in this undertaking. The gym was decorated exactly the way any junior would be proud to know was our Prom. Following this we could relax and look forward to being Seniors and putting out the Annual. N. 3 ' ' an-wav i. And the reason was obvious for it was the day on which the third great Viking Carnival was to be held. This activ- ity lasted until 8:00 P.M. when the basketball toss, grab bag, telegraph, dart throw, and all the rest of the booths were ready for the public to see and to buy from. Beginning the evenings fun was a program which received many laughs from the audience. Milford Humphrey jr. did a fine job of conducting the pep band in one part of the program. During the course of the evening bingo was played, this concession giving to the winners many valuable prizes. The assembly was the crowded scene of the boxing maches, also, dancing was held in the other part of the assembly. The money from this successful carnival was donated to the Athletic Club, This carnival will long be remembered as the last to be held in the old school. +45 fr F lf U71 HU ECUMING i . 1. MELVA KATHY QUEEN JOANN This year, for the first time in the history of Grand Marais High School, homecoming was held during the football season. The homecoming celebration lasted for three days, October 18, 19, and 20, during which was held skits, snake dance, community bonfire, football game with Floodwood, float parade, and home- coming dance. A homecoming committee, made up of Diane Johnson, Denise Linnell, Helen Bergstrom, Curtis Burns, Byron Brown, Glenn Clemons, and Robert Sutherlund, under the direction of Mr. Ikola, met to plan the festivities. The night of the 18th, skits were held in the school gymnasium, and intro- ductions of the queen contestants were made. On the evening of the 19th, people were startled to see a snake dance proceeding through the down-town streets. Traf- fic was held up for an hour while the happy dancers wound their way up to the air- port where the community bonfire was already blazing. Yells and the school songs were led by the cheerleaders. The next morning, with a cold drizzle to back them up, the float parade began. Many unique and original ideas were presented during this parade. In the afternoon came the highlight of the homecoming celebration: the football game with Floodwood and the crowning of the homecoming queen for 1952. At half time, Jo Ann Brazell, the junior candidate, was crowned queen by jim Hill, foot- ball captain. Her runner ups were: Kathy Kenna, Senior candidateg Melva Smith, Sophomore candidate. All three girls were Seniors, sponsored by the respective classes. The night of the 20th, a homecoming dance was held at the school gymna- sium to honor our queen, jo Ann. We all certainly agree that this was the most successful homecoming ever to be seen at Grand Marais. Let's continue to have more in the new school in years to come. l28l f , 5. x as A V .H Qx fr QE 'nf Q .' ,. -fix WY.. i 4J. x M Wie' . 2. -F-.5 '.,.,' 4 K , , A -af., f . gf... .EQ 1' new ' X . . x 3 Y 9 f J E N i J! The Grand Marais High School band in its second year of existence, under the direction of Mr. Ikola, has improved steadily, until now it is a band of which we are proud. And why not? With snappy blue and gold uniforms which are always clean and pressed and with white shoes all matching, they form a neat group of music makers. They won't have to worry about the weather spoiling their uni- forms any longer either, for the P.T.A. sponsored a Tag Day to raise money for raincoats. During the course of the past year our band has participated in many activ- ities, one being a trip to Canada to play for the Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh, now Queen Elizabeth II, and the Duke, the reigning consort. They can say without a doubt that they are the only American high school band to have play- ed for such reigning royalty. A Christmas concert with the chorus proved to be very successful. The basketball tournaments brought our band to the Duluth Armory where they gave an excellent showing, as well in dress as in music making. Among the many and varied functions for which they performed are-homecoming, basketball games, and the village Christmas party. The rhythmic swing band has made a name for itself as a result of its major performances - playing for the Chamber of Commerce Dinner, the Central Ski Tournament, and the lob's Daugh- ter's Dance. On April 18th they gave a concert which will long be remembered. On May 1st and 2nd, in Duluth, Grand Marais High was represented by the band at the Music Festival. Concluding the year's activities the band played for graduation and Mem- orial Day. They are now looking forward to their first concert which they will play in the new school. tssl CHURU 4? r Row 1, left to right: Delores Croft, Pat Cummings, Melva Smith, Sonia jentoft, Betty Backlund, Irene Hammer, Yvonne Tofte, Marie Norman, Barbara Savard, Kathy Kenna, Gladys Nelson, Mr. Ikola, Director, Row 2: Ellen Tofte, Barbara Eliasen, Florence Williamson, Sharon Peterson, Carol Bent, Beatrice johnson, Virginia Nelson, Mary jane Creech, Pat Russell, Helen Hall, Diane johnson, Lucille Hall. Twenty-six able bodied men reported to the call, including nine seniors, eight juniors, six sophomores, and three freshmen. Although they faced tough competition, the season ended with two wins and three losses. No doubt, this experience will be invaluable next year. We shall miss the old Grand Marais High School, where we have spent the last twelve years. We look forward, though, to the time when we will visit the following graduating classes in the new Grand Marais High School. As we walk through the halls, familiar faces greet us. Some of the teachers we had are still here, but many of them are new. We stop and talk over old times with the teachers we know. Our graduation seems like such a lon time ago. We are invited to see the Viking Carniial and the Homecoming. These are huge affairs, with the gymnasium decorated beautifully. There are big turn- outs for the school dances. Everyone wants to dance in the new auditorium, to the music of the dance band. The basketball games are wonderful to see. The new gymnasium holds so many more people comfortably. The football field is excellent. lt is such a nice lace to watch the vames. Then we fhink back to our oiiivn school days. Maybe we even miss going to school. Sometimes we wish we could begin our four years of high school over again, just to be a part of the new, modern Grand Marais High School. So, we the graduating class of 1952, bid farewell to our school days and say hello to the road ahead. big thank you to the ad- to the vertisers who made the produc- CLASS OF '52 tion of this annual possible.
