The Youth of Today qconnnuedp To every man there openeth a way and aways and a way And the hlgh soul takes the hxgh way And the low soul gropes the low And ln betvx een on the mlsty fiats the rest go to and fro In one sense the maJor1ty of us have now completed the greater part of our learnmg but ln another sense we w1ll only be embarkxng on a new field of learnmg Not the battle field conquerlng our belllgerent enemy but the field of honor strlv 1ng to overcome our adversarxes At the lpresent txme we have no forelgn adversarxes but who knows at what future tlme we may become entangled w1th another country m some wav At least we can be grateful that we have no leader who tells us how to conduct our lxves 1n general who takes away our pleasures and g1V9S us IH return d1stress and unhappiness Our nation has a responslblllty to keep out of any entanglements forexgn or domest1c m order to go on to solve the world s problems Our youth w1l1 play the lead1ng role ID th1s drama Through educat1on and tra1n1ng th1s may be accom pl1shed At least we hope so Too frequently we leave too much ln government to a few people w1ll1ng to do the hard work As a result these few are quxte apt to make a busmess of lt and when th1s comes to pass then democracy ceases to be a democracy This IS what our youth today owes our DHIIOH a w1ll1ngness to take an actlve and mtelllgent part ID the government When a natlon goes to war It ceases to solxe the problems of peace Our youth now has the oblgatlon to keep hope ahve 1n the youth of other natxons A stronger bond of frlendshlp should be formed between the youth of the dlfferent natlons Sometlmes we become pre-Judlced and mlsunderstand the actxons of our fellow countrles We must strxve to overcome th1s and develop a hopeful att1tude Our natlon depends upon us as good patr1ot1c and actxve c1t1zens but whatever we eventually become we sincerely hope that our learnmg thus far w1ll overthrow any suggestlon of government contrary to our own democracy the United States of Amerlca At least I am qu1te sure we are all aware our greatest asset IH l1fe IS for thls reason perhaps the fact that we are and w1ll remaln one hundred per cent All Americans' VIRGINIA GETZ Salutatory Members of the Class of 1940 parents members of the faculty board of educa ton and frlends We the Class of 1940 want to welcome you on th1s occaslon whlch marks the culmmatlon of many of our fondest hopes and dreams We are leavxng behxnd us w1th no small regret much that has been dear to us to most of us lt means the partxng of the ways The mtlmate daxly contacts of school l1fe both 1n the class room and soclally w1ll be gone We realxze that all of our accompllshments have been made poslble by the steady help and guldance of the faculty and Mr Sawdon We are consclous also of the debt we owe to our parents for thelr unfallmg endeavors to glVC us every th1ng they poss1bly could Soclety doesnt expect a chlld to repay dollar for dollar the amount spent on h1s younger l1fe and educat1on On the other hand It does expect that we repay our parents and frxends by bemg honest uprlght c1t1zens str1v1ng always for greater achlevement We must prove our worthlness of your falth 1n us To me the frlendshlps formed ln school are of the greatest slgnlficance When we reallze that everyone who IS present tomght IS our frlend we are strengthened nd encouraged to face the future Wlth confidence Everyone of you here has had ome part IU our success and we hope that wlth your further 1nsp1rat1on and guldance we can cllmb to far greater helghtS Those of us who w1ll have the prxvllege of furtherlng our educat1on are very grateful for the opportumty For others among us our hlgh school educat1on and act1v1t1es w1ll be our only real capltal as we venture 1nto the unknown future Tomorrow mght we w1ll step out 1nto the vxorld to follow our chosen careers We only hope that we can do thls wlth as much falth and success as you have We hope we can Justxfy your faxth m us LILLIAN HATHAWAY Page Tvs enty one - fl , 1 1 r 1 . v . ., 1 1 1 - 1 1 ' 1 1 , . - 1 . . , . , . , . Class History The fall of 1936 found over 100 passengers aboard the plane headed for G L H S Sh1rley DHVIS as our pllot flew a stralght and true course through that first h9Ct1C lap of our Journey Carvell Keeny became our p1lot on the momentous second lap and then for the thlrd lap turned the controls back to Sh1rley Dav1s The th1rd lap was an ex entful one m our ln es Flrst a get acqua1nted party was held so all new passengers m1ght get to know each other better Then the pas sengers all got the1r heads together and gave the sen1ors a c1rcus banquet 1D the cab1n of the plane Clowns an1mals and all the c1rcus people were there to make a merry txme Tom Ba1rd our sen1or p1lot flew us through the maves of the last lap of our Journey The great events that came were the Semor Prom the maganne sale and the Senlor Year Book Speclal honors came to Y1rg1n1a Getz as valed1ctor1an and to L1ll1an Hathaway as salutator1an Dlplomas 1n our hands and knowledge 1n our m1nds we left GLH S aboard our plane On Commencement n1ght we w1ll al1ght from our plane to board a new and larger plane It IS a comfort to know that we shall Stlll be together for we shall be full fledged passengers upon the Plane of L1fe The Youth of Today Fellow students faculty members of the School Board and fr1ends Ton1ght we senlors awaken to the new and greater challenges of tomorrow Many w1ll be seek1ng hlgher knowledge 1n h1gher 1nst1tut1ons Whlle others w1ll be seek1ng employment 1n varlous fields Some perhaps w1ll fall Whlle others more fortunate w1ll succeed We Sen1ors today upon graduat1on have chmbed another rung of the ladder to true success and w1ll no doubt have a great bearlng on the generat1ons to come We must first have 1deas and then develop the courage and 1n1t1at1ve to formulate plans and prmclples wh1ch w1ll carry them out Only through educat1on can we develop these 1deals and 1d63S These last four years 1n hlgh school have taught us much more than we knew before They have g1ven us a new outlook on l1fe Let us hope that 1n the next four years to come we w1ll keep progressmg and 1n the next and the next Each year should be a steppmg stone to greater educatlon One of the best tra1ts we develop 1n school IS true fa1th and patr1ot1sm to our school Now on leav1ng school th1s attltude w1ll be carrxed on toward a larger 1nst1tut1on the nat10n Speakmg of fa1th that remlnds me of a l1ttle story deal1ng Wlth Charhe McCarthy and Edgar Bergen wh1ch was told by a speaker recently You may have heard It before but at least lt brlngs out my pomt It seems Edgar was askmg Charlxe about h1S gxrl frxend He Sald Charlle do you mean to say that you re actually true and fa1thful to her Charlle replled qu1ckly Oh yes yes yes frequently Well we all know that th1s IS not true fa1th To be truly falthful we must be conslstent 1n lt We must carry lt out to the h1ghest degree Now for another l1ttle story on the ser1ous s1de Somet1mes many of us thmk we have not the way or means for educat1on ThlS IS not true For example look at Dr Wllberforce Eames the great b1bl1ogracher who d1ed not long ago He was del1ver1ng grocerles before he was twelve Yet wlthout even a n1ght school to a1d h1m Just by hls own hard d1gg1ng he became the worlds greatest author1ty on books of the past and was honored by the learned soc1et1es of Europe He became a remarkable lmgulst too mastermg uch languages as Chmese Japanese San skrlt and some of the Afrlcan dl3l6CtS as vnell True vxe cant all be Eameses and lt IS a fact that a formal course of lnstructlon dmlmstered by teachers lS the best way for us to acquxre knowledge but educat1on can be yours 1f you want It badlv enough and are w1ll1ng to make sacrnices for lt as d1d the maJor1ty of the great men and women of h1story Yet m1ll1ons sav they have no opportunltv for educa t1on Agaxn I say thlS IS xery untrue There IS always a vxav for those who earnestly deslre educatlon In COHHQCTIOD xx 1th thlS there IS a l1ttle poem wh1ch would be well to remember XVh1Ch goes Page Twentx . 7 . .Y . - . x . . , , l a s - . v ' v . ,. g. . . .
