Class History The fall of 1936 found over 100 passengers aboard the plane headed for G L H S Sh1rley DHVIS as our pllot flew a stralght and true course through that first h9Ct1C lap of our Journey Carvell Keeny became our p1lot on the momentous second lap and then for the thlrd lap turned the controls back to Sh1rley Dav1s The th1rd lap was an ex entful one m our ln es Flrst a get acqua1nted party was held so all new passengers m1ght get to know each other better Then the pas sengers all got the1r heads together and gave the sen1ors a c1rcus banquet 1D the cab1n of the plane Clowns an1mals and all the c1rcus people were there to make a merry txme Tom Ba1rd our sen1or p1lot flew us through the maves of the last lap of our Journey The great events that came were the Semor Prom the maganne sale and the Senlor Year Book Speclal honors came to Y1rg1n1a Getz as valed1ctor1an and to L1ll1an Hathaway as salutator1an Dlplomas 1n our hands and knowledge 1n our m1nds we left GLH S aboard our plane On Commencement n1ght we w1ll al1ght from our plane to board a new and larger plane It IS a comfort to know that we shall Stlll be together for we shall be full fledged passengers upon the Plane of L1fe The Youth of Today Fellow students faculty members of the School Board and fr1ends Ton1ght we senlors awaken to the new and greater challenges of tomorrow Many w1ll be seek1ng hlgher knowledge 1n h1gher 1nst1tut1ons Whlle others w1ll be seek1ng employment 1n varlous fields Some perhaps w1ll fall Whlle others more fortunate w1ll succeed We Sen1ors today upon graduat1on have chmbed another rung of the ladder to true success and w1ll no doubt have a great bearlng on the generat1ons to come We must first have 1deas and then develop the courage and 1n1t1at1ve to formulate plans and prmclples wh1ch w1ll carry them out Only through educat1on can we develop these 1deals and 1d63S These last four years 1n hlgh school have taught us much more than we knew before They have g1ven us a new outlook on l1fe Let us hope that 1n the next four years to come we w1ll keep progressmg and 1n the next and the next Each year should be a steppmg stone to greater educatlon One of the best tra1ts we develop 1n school IS true fa1th and patr1ot1sm to our school Now on leav1ng school th1s attltude w1ll be carrxed on toward a larger 1nst1tut1on the nat10n Speakmg of fa1th that remlnds me of a l1ttle story deal1ng Wlth Charhe McCarthy and Edgar Bergen wh1ch was told by a speaker recently You may have heard It before but at least lt brlngs out my pomt It seems Edgar was askmg Charlxe about h1S gxrl frxend He Sald Charlle do you mean to say that you re actually true and fa1thful to her Charlle replled qu1ckly Oh yes yes yes frequently Well we all know that th1s IS not true fa1th To be truly falthful we must be conslstent 1n lt We must carry lt out to the h1ghest degree Now for another l1ttle story on the ser1ous s1de Somet1mes many of us thmk we have not the way or means for educat1on ThlS IS not true For example look at Dr Wllberforce Eames the great b1bl1ogracher who d1ed not long ago He was del1ver1ng grocerles before he was twelve Yet wlthout even a n1ght school to a1d h1m Just by hls own hard d1gg1ng he became the worlds greatest author1ty on books of the past and was honored by the learned soc1et1es of Europe He became a remarkable lmgulst too mastermg uch languages as Chmese Japanese San skrlt and some of the Afrlcan dl3l6CtS as vnell True vxe cant all be Eameses and lt IS a fact that a formal course of lnstructlon dmlmstered by teachers lS the best way for us to acquxre knowledge but educat1on can be yours 1f you want It badlv enough and are w1ll1ng to make sacrnices for lt as d1d the maJor1ty of the great men and women of h1story Yet m1ll1ons sav they have no opportunltv for educa t1on Agaxn I say thlS IS xery untrue There IS always a vxav for those who earnestly deslre educatlon In COHHQCTIOD xx 1th thlS there IS a l1ttle poem wh1ch would be well to remember XVh1Ch goes Page Twentx . 7 . .Y . - . x . . , , l a s - . v ' v . ,. g. . . .
