Jim, as he prefered us to call him, brought us a week of interesting and bene- ficial talks. IB 20 A new project initiated this year by the Academy was the presentation of Week of Prayer at surrounding grade schools. Groups of students went to the schools attempting to show the boys and girls how Christ fits into every aspect of life. 21 One advantage of a day school is that talents developed can be put to use in the local churches. Pictured here are some students who help out regularly in their Sabbath Schools. ft hT ■j l 22 I ' m.. 23 Youthfest! The mere utterance of this word brings to mind enjoyable evenings spent in community homes. These meet- ings are usually aimed at helping young people with their problems and are liked by all who attend. Another first this year at G. L.A. was the Bible Bowl. Four teams (one from each class) of four members each competed during three chapels to find out who really knew their Bibles best. In the first game the Freshman proved no match for the mighty Sophomores losing by a hefty margin. Second game the Seniors beat the Juniors fairly easily but not without a struggle. The final playoff game was a close one with the Seniors almost winning but the Soph- omores emerged victorious. He is often seen with a smile on his face and working with students. 54 Another new teacher, Mr. Clow is often seen carrying his camera for one purpose or another whether it be for the yearbook (of which he is the sponsor), for photography class (which he teaches), or personal reasons he very much enjoys this hobby. In addition to photography he also teaches Bible I G III and is in charge of our library. ■ As principal of G. L. A. Mr. Brooks has placed a great emphesis on the school ' s spiritual life. He is often seen at pray- er meeting and takes an active interest in the stu- dents ' personal needs. J A y—t 55 n A former student, Mr. Black is now one of our teachers of 3 years. He teaches Science Classes, Geometry, Mechanical Drawing and Auto Mechanics. He also plays the tuba in our band. Mr. David Fuller was born and raised in Lin- coln, Nebraska where he majored in Music Ed. at Union College. He has taught two years at a ten grade S.D.A. school in Eugene, Oregon and now manages the instrumental part of the music department for the first year here at G. L.A. — ■ — — i ■■m £ J v From dry Arizona to snowy Grand Ledge Michigan. Mrs. Grant came to teach the business classes. She is also our paper staff sponsor. 57 y x I Mr. Beckwith is our math and history teacher, work study coordina- tor, and vice-principal. He has been with us for four years. Often he is mistaken for a student because of his size, but good things come in small packages. ■W Mr. Emery is our English and j ournalism teacher. He also sponsors our tumbling team, and is very active in the academy religious activities. 59 For seven years Mr. Sotala has patiently directed the choir. Through his expert instruction many young people have learned to praise God through their voices. Mr. Chalker, a native of Wyoming, has been in- structing Bible for four years. Seniors especially appreciate his help as the guidance counselor. He also acquired the job of registrar this year. It is great to once again have a full time P. E. teacher. Mr. Magers is a graduate oiAndrews University. His greatest enjoyment as a teacher is a good floor-hockey game. till ■ fL rz •_ - i ■ ■ ,■■ ' f 4 61 A concert pianist, Mrs. Hamrick serves as secretary to the Principal and teaches home economics. In spite of these responsibilities she is always will- ing to tend to the needs of students who need help. For many years Mrs. Link has been head of the cafeteria here at G. L.A.. Besides being in charge of our lunch pro- gram she also prepares all the food for banquets and other similar activities of the school. 4 64 I The Champs: Standing; Dan Ham- stra, Rich Greeley, Captain; Jim Harebottle, Dave Houseman, Tom Harebottle, Wendell Link. A. has given out awards for honorary Alumni of the Year. The following people, because of their support at the school, received this award. Elder Duwane Miller, former district pastor and board chairman, received the award for his constant support and help. When the G. L.A. girls dorm burned in 1967 he kept the school on its feet when closing seemed in- evitable. Elder Alonzo Mohr, manager of the Grand Ledge craftshop, is a long time backer of G.L. A. The students appreciate the chance he gives them to work and pay their way through school. For years the Links have given strong support to G.L. A. They have not only kept us fed but have sent four of their children here and have stood true to G. L.A. in some of its shakier years. Known for many years as Aunt Bea and Uncle Russ. The Parks have been here ever since the doors of G.L. A. opened. Through their hard work and willingness another graduating c. ass will be able to walk into the world with an understanding of what God can do. 93 On December 13, The Heritage II presented a sacred concert before one of the largest audiences assembled for any lyceum event here at Grand Lodge. 94 Anderson, Barbara, 329 Winifred, Lansing, MI 48917 (372-5457) Ayers, Kevin, 906 Old Post Rd. , Grand Ledge, MI 48837 (627-3120) Blackerby, Craig, 5492 E.
