GRAND JUNCTION, COLORADO 81501 ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY PAGE 103 CLOSING PAGE 179 ADVERTISING PAGE 193 This Is GJHS Here it sits, That empty skeleton. Without a soul it cannot Today we start school, Today we begin our life. Suddenly the skeleton is alive, It breathes, it shakes, it shudders, it quakes; We create the spirit of our school. People and teachers come and go, They leave their dust behind in names in books, etched vandalism, old yearbooks. Soon, when all is done for the year, Once again the school dies. With books and papers scattered on the floor, Students leave with joy for the summer Only to yearn again for a new year, a new start, a new life. The Classroom don’t we have fun doing work? “Oh no someone groans as Mr. Baker handed out the Anatomy test. When I took this class, phrases like ‘looks good on your record’, ‘college level class’, and ‘so interesting' danced in my head. Now, as I look at this test, the only thing I’m thinking about is going out tonight with my friends. Moving on to second hour, I can hear my stomach talking to me. “Give me food, NOW!” “Shut up!” I say with clenched teeth. “Food, food, food! my stomach yells back. “SHUT UP!” I yell back. Why is everybody looking at me so funny? I’m leaning my head on my desk as Mr. Ross walks by and taps me on the head with a protractor. “It’s only third hour, WAKE UP! Trigonometry is FUN! Let’s get going!” “Mr. Ross, I'm not having any fun! Where’s the fun? I don’t see any fun.” “You're going to have fun whether you like it or not!” I think I have to do some reconditioning of my thinking. Something must be wrong with me because I can’t say that ‘4 hours of Trig homework is FUN’. Well, this hour I can relax, have a little Pepsi, munch food, and have a chat with my friends. No such luck. “Story deadlines are due today? No! Say that's not so Mrs. Miller!” Now they're trying to make me crazy with story deadlines. First Mr. Ross and now Mrs. Miller. Boy, am I full. What a lunch! Isn’t eating fun?!! I love to eat. Then I love to sleep. But NOOOO! Some teachers have some sort of psychological problem with students sleeping in their class. So fine!! I’m ready to go home now, I really am. Some dumb person made a 6th hour and I could just strangle them right now. Even worse, I have had the same substitute in this class for the past 3 months. Absolutely no one in the class does the homework except the geek in the front. Then the entire class copies from him. Oh boy! It’s all beginning to catch up with me. Homework, sleep, need for food, life. Is school really necessary? I love school so much. I really do. That’s why I take home every book in my locker. We also protect them with our lives. It’s because we love them so much. We all know that at the end of the day, we really are dissappointed to leave after it has been so much fun. However, we can look forward to the next day when we’ll be back at school having fun. The only thing wrong with it is the fact that all sport activities are inside, but that's O.K. I really like going to the basketball games and participating in the dress-up nights and cheering with the crowd. I always go to the games armed with sunglasses, a hat, a tie, or if necessary a Hawaiian shirt and a lei. Most of the time, orange and black are the appropriate colors to wear. I can always tell when winter is here for good. The boys on the swim team show up one day at school with their heads shaved. People say that the swimmers are crazy, but they always win their swim meets. I think that there is a connection there. Then comes the day when, while sitting in class, it begins to snow. Then the entire class goes crazy. It is fun to watch. The teacher tries to teach a lesson, but who listens? Everyone is busy talking about how good the snow is going to be this year and what ski resorts they want to ski. Then, there are those who have to go out and play in the snow. It makes life interesting at GJHS. Short sleeves come out or a rain jacket, which ever is appropriate. Lunches are eaten out on the lawn while students try to 'catch a few rays’. (Teachers even enjoy doing this too.) With spring, such events as graduation and prom come around. Unfortunately with these events, students are often involved in accidents caused by drinking and driving. For example, one weekend, a young man is out driving and backpacking in the mountains. The next weekend, Barry Dosh is a paraplegic because he mixed drinking and driving. He communicated to the students in the assembly, “Don’t drink and drive. It was a shame that we had to change. Everybody looked so nice! After a few movies and stuffed once again, my date and I went outside and watched the sun rise. Then it was home to bed. We’ve finally made it. During the past three years, we, the Grand Junction High School Class of 1985, have worked hard and played hard in order to earn a place at this ceremony today. As this day grew nearer, there were times when we all felt that it would never come. When our last day of classes finally ended, we ran screaming through the hallways, thrilled to be free, excited to move on. And as we stand here now, all of us are looking to the future, many of us to college, others to jobs, some even to families. This is truly an exciting day. Our class motto states, “We have just reached the foothills; the mountains lie ahead.’’ This tells us that our graduation today is only a plateau; and though we have labored to get this far, we must continue to work in the future, accepting new challenges throughout our lives. The time we have spent at Grand Junction High School has prepared us to face anything in our paths. Although we are anxious to move on, we are leaving many memories behind. So today, before we all go our separate ways, take time to look back and remember some of the lessons we've learned as well as some of the fun we’ve had. Nancy Matchett We are inheriting an Earth with many problems: war, famine, overpopulation, pollution, and environmental destruction. As we head out to the world, it is crucial that we work to solve these problems and not create new ones. Time is running out, but we can make a difference. Granted, not just anyone can solve the problem of nuclear fusion or discover a way to feed thousands where only hundreds could eat before, but we can each do our own part. Let’s be part of the solution and not the problem. A wise person once said: “There are those who make things happen, those who watch things happen, and those who wonder what the hell is going on! Let us be those who make things happen. We can make a difference, together. Every one of us has the potential for leadership; it doesn’t come easily, but with hard work and a positive attitude, we can succeed. Many people sav that others are brighter, more talented, or more fortunate. These people say, “I know Ernest Hemingway wrote Old Man and the Sea in only 26 days. What they don't know, however, is that he thought about that book every day for over 16 years. Believe in yourself; always give your best effort. Together, we can make this world a better place for everyone. Craig Heacock It is important to remember all of the great times, but we all found out that growing up can hurt, too. It seems so unfair that we had to learn so many lessons the hard way. Friendships that we needed so much were taken for granted, maybe even lost forever because we were too proud to say I’m sorry. The conflicts we have had with teachers and parents go without saying. We fought them all the way, but with each fight we have grown up a little bit. We hope teachers, friends, and our families can be proud of us today, and hopefully we can use what you have taught us in the future. We will always have the good memories of high school, and we can’t change the mistakes we have made. If we have learned from all our experiences, then we can handle anything that life has in store for us. Laura Bush and Miki Schaefer “We have just reached the foot The class flower is the white rose. Maroon and silver are the senior class colors. This year's senior class has much to remember about the past three years spent at Grand Junction High School. We have changed our style of clothes, watched music videos and seen the first woman run for vice-president. We have had good and bad times, but we have always stuck together. We have seen firsts and lasts and major events that affected our lives and will be remembered when we look back at our years at Grand Junction High School. The seniors of 1985 know that they are the best and will continue to strive for excellence after graduation. l eading Ihe seniors are class officers: Heather Rose, vice president: Kevin Wanebo, president and Jalyn Scarbrough, secretary. Students Cheer Coach Dave Warmack led the Grand Junction High School Tigers to a semifinals game in football. During Christmas he discovered he had leukemia. When the students heard they volunteered their time and efforts to help raise money for his medical expenses. The Coach Warmack Fund was started and $29,000 was raised. Fund raisers included basketball games, banquets, dona- tion cannisters, and dances. Coach Warmack has overcome the struggle but he is still continually making progress. Students signed a postcard to welcome him home after chemotherapy treatment in Los Angeles, California. Holding the postcard are Angie Keil, Mike Vescio, Tim Minter and Jeff Johnson. The 1984 football team opened their season against the Farmington Scorpions. After being defeated 32-14, the team marched on to win the next eight games, clinching the Southwestern League title. Winning by a narrow margin of 21-20, the Tigers advanced to the semi-finals, held at home once again the following Saturday. It’s a hot day and a small crowd, armed with water bottles, stopwatches, and towels, mills around restlessly. A murmur passes through them, “Here they come.” The crowd, instantly alive, tenses, thumbs poised, as the leader comes into view. The pack follows, always near, threatening to take charge. Cheers of encouragement burst sporadically from the bystanders, urging the runners to wipe the sweat off their brows, reach inside, and find the strength to stretch out, pull hard, and win. Such is the life of a cross country runner. The cross country team members faced this scene every weekend. Both boys and girls placed well at their meets. The girls took third in the SWL but failed to send anyone to state. The boys took second in the district and placed a respectable eleventh at the state meet. David Montoya, Craig Heacock, Karl Brewer, and Manuel Alvarado placed in the top 100 out of 200 plus finishers. Soccer the newest sport Bobby Fritz fights for the ball. Track leaders of the pack Track is a varied sport. At the sound of a gun, they lunge from the starting blocks and run for all they’re worth. Or they pace themselves, saving some for that last kick. Or they jump up and over or in a pit. But they keep going. The girls team placed in the top two of every meet they participated in. They were strong in almost all facets of the meets. They took first in the District Meet by five points, edging out Durango in the last event. The boys worked hard and spent the year on individual improvement. They placed fifth at Districts. Twenty members went to State. Deanna Knapp placed fourth in the high jump. Katie Moran took tenth in the two-mile run, and Nikki Cormack placed fourth in the one-mile run. . Cheerleaders Boost School Spirit During the summer the Varsity squad fine tuned their skills at a Colorado State University camp. They were awarded all blue ribbons and several spirit awards. The Cheerleaders showed their spirit and dedication by hanging posters throughout the halls and on athletes’ lockers, decorating at the footgall games and making “goody bags” for the football teams’ victorious road trips. They not only cheered for football, but also volleyball, girls and boys basketball and wrestling. A new dimension was added this year by introducing male cheerleaders onto the scene for the state football playoffs. Along with all the traditional jobs of a Grand Junction Cheerleader, they took their talents and competed at the State Competition in Colorado Springs, bringing Grand Junction even more recognition and respect. They played teams from Palisade, Fruita, and Central. There were eight teams involved. You must learn from experiences, and hurts and failures Your bitterness can become rage only to set you back. Pass on through the crossroads and learn all you can Because not all is good, nor bad, But all is a learning for the soul. This page is dedicated to Kathy Schooner. Graduation is a highlight along the pathway of life for most of us. For Kathy it was a major goal because crippling arthritis made simple movements painful. She died two months before.graduation day. Images Of GJHS ... Come on you mighty Tigers Into the fray Show us some pep now We must win today Rah, rah, rah Down with other colors Orange and black boost -high Three cheers for Junction That’s our way cry ■ ' f it a, ■ 191 The 1984-85 school year is over. We will use this yearbook to look back at the friends we've made, and in the case of Kathy Schooner, and Dona Smith, the ones we lost. We look at the victories we’ve achieved and the hurdles we've overcome. Look back and remember the pull for Coach Warmack when, not only he. but all Tigers fought against leukemia. Yes, we will look back, look back and laugh with fond memories and remember not only our achievements as a school but our own personal victories. Those that can only be measured through our own individual definitions of success. So, as the students of GJHS come and go, we must try, each day, to make this school number one. No matter the size, no matter the problem, the students of Grand Junction High School will come out on top. As the 1985 graduating class leaves Grand Junction High School we can look back at our experiences here and be proud of our school, we can use this yearbook as a reminder of the happy and sad times. On behalf of the 1985 Tiger Yearbook staff, i wish you the best of luck. Sincerely, John L.
