Ummm. why is Def Leppard giving a rock concert in my ear? Alarm? School! 7:25 a.m.l Jump out of bed, jump into my clothes, jump into the car. There it is GJHS. Why are all the halls so empty? What time is it? Ten till eight! Oh boy. I'm in big trouble! Hi Mr. Ross, sorry I'm late, but you see I was abducted by a group of cute little Cambodians who wanted me to become an honorary boat person and the inauguaration was this morning. Are you sure this is my thirty-fifth tardy. Sir? Hi Ann ... Sure I'd love to copy your homework, if you really want me to ... Pay attention! I don't know how any of you expect to learn anything. CSU will be holding its Math Days next week and I feel that it would be an excellent opportunity for those of you more advanced students ... He looks at me? I wouldn't even want to torture myself one milli-moment longer in the Wonderful World of Math! PING-PING-PING Hey watch it! Stupid sophomore. I'm a senior you know! Just because I'm talking up at you doesn't mean ... Ouch!! Well yes. I know I'm late, but this giant humming bird swooped out of my locker and started eating the hairspray oft my hair and .. well, okay; I'll clean the desks for 45 minutes after school. I love Psychology even though it does get a little scary when Mrs. Whitacre uses us as subjects in experiments. It never really hurts, and we always get M M's when it's over. Oh no, I forgot to write in my journal for 6th hour. He's not going to be pleased. I'll do it 5th hour. Naaah ... the reason I took a free 5th hour was so I could go home and watch General Hospital. PING-PING-PING 25-4-35. click-click. Whoosh, SMACK!! Mesa County Public Library comes crashing to the floor. When did I check out these books anyway? Shove. Cram, Run to class. Journalism, my favorite class. Typewriters banging, phones ringing and editors screaming. An ad staffer is on strike. I think I'll offer him a job on the yearbook. A yearly salary, two weeks paid vacation and a neon pink Cadillac, (with Josten's printed on the side, of course). How could anyone refuse? Have any of you ever watched Dave Nissen and Teddy Parker cut out little paper space dogs and then race them on a masking tape track? That's SQUARE! SPACE DOG 500 VRRRROOOOM It's ol' yeller around the corner, he takes the lead by a snout and ... Awwww, Nissen get your dog off my dog! PING-PING-PING It's Movie Day in here The lights go off and already the fun begins. Vawnn ... Hey what's everyone looking at? I must have dozed oft. Why are they laughing? What's that on my face? Oh, great, I fell asleep on my spiral again! I wonder how long it takes for skins elasticity to regain normality? Let's see, TO more minutes left. I wonder if my teacher gets a rash from all the polyester she wears? Five minutes left ... my nails look so gross. Who ever thought passionate purple sunset could look like barf when it dried, Yuck-ola. A little paper football comes whizzing past my head and lands on the teacher's desk ... What?! It wasn't ME: Golly Gee Whiz. I was just sitting here behind my 'Star Wars' notebook ... It couldn't have been me! ... Okay, fine if that's the way you're going to be. I don't need this ... no, wait! I'm sorry. If I get sent to the office one more time this week the “Big Guys are going to call my parents. Well that would be just awful. My parents think I'm a well-adjusted United States Citizen when actually, I'm just a SENIOR!! PING-PING-PING Student bodies? Pag© 10 Tiger Times Grand Junction. Fooled you! Fortunately for us. that old tradition was broken this year. That wasn't the only tradition broken. The traditions we're talking about, are Spirit Week, pep assemblies class competitions and airbands that rocked GJHS with enough spirit to lost more than a few Homecomings. Everyone dressed up for Tourist Day. Toga Day, Punk Day. Dress-Up Day. Gangster Day. and Orange and Black Day. The Homecoming dance was held Sept. 24. The 1983 Royalty was as follows: Jill Jefferson, queen. Patricia Moran, senior attendent; Laura Bush, junior attendent. and Darci Jensen, sophomore attendent. Pag© 14 Tiger Times Grand Junction. Assemblies Enthusiams, skits, and lots of spirit are the central ingredients of an assembly. Add in a healthy portion of competitions, air bands, and successful athletic programs and you developed an important element of the school year, fun! Assemblies began with the fall highlight of Homecoming and carried through to the second annual Spring Fest Many groups contribute to the success of the assemblies; the cheerleaders, Pom Pons, the band, but mostly the student body. Page 18 Tiger Times Grand Junction. Colorado Cottonball Martinez Crowned Cottonball King Cottonball was held on February 25 in the cafeteria. Traditionally the dance, sponsored by the sophomore class, is a girl - ask - guy dance. The music was provided by Kevin Kempers and Cody Powell. Reigning as king for the occasion was Danny Martinez. Phil Estenson was named senior attendant. Scott Else was Junior Attendant, and Brent Lenderman was named Sophomore Attendant. Sophomore Attendant Brent Lenderman King: Danny Martinez Junior Attendant Scott Else Senior Attendant: Phil Estenson Page JP ige JirnesJSrandJunctioa Cojo Not a creature was stirring except for the Tigers This year Student Council was very busy with several activities which brought forth the Christmas spirit. Starting off the season was a tree decorating party followed by a door decorating contest; Mrs. Hyatt's room came in first. Many clul Mrs. Whitacre's Eddie Murphy (How to be a Ho-Ho-Ho) came in second, and Mrs. Eads' came in third. During the week of December 12 - 16, Student Council sponsored a canned food drive to help bene- ed in the the sea-inish Club, providecWilluminarios at the Alumni Dance and NHS who sponsored the Alumni Dance and basketball game for the second year in a row. Let's hope this stays a yearly tradition. The Christmas Assembly was held on December 22, with last year's Head Boy and Girl, Mike Meyers and Stephanie Meacham speaking on behalf of the Alumni. A member of the Senior Class, Tom Brine-gar, had his Christmas Story presented at the assembly. Many other groups also provided entertainment. Basketball stars from the past played an exciting game, showing each other what they have forgot- ten since they were once Tigers. Following this exciting game was the Annual Alumni Dance, which started off with a bang and ended in a roar. This is the end of the story because there isn't any more. Page 21 Tiger Times Grand Junction, Colo Spring Fest This year for dress up days we had Beach day. Dress up day, MTV day, Foreigner day, and Tootsie day. The participation for these days is really improved from the past few years which made it a lot more fun for everyone. We also had our Beach Dance which added to the fun. Finally the weekend came and it was time for our Carnival '84. In the Carnival we had the top two finalists of the air band contest compete for the championship, mud volleyball, mud tug of war, arm wrestling, a kissing booth, and many other booths. The theme for the dance was The Best is Yet to Come.” Earlier in the week the student body selected the royalty to reign over the traditional Spring festivity. The girls chosen were Lisa Arbogast, junior attendent; Laini Stadler, senior attendent, and Terri Chappell, queen. The royalty were honored at the dance where the coronation of the queen took place. The 1983 season It's been said that adversity builds character The 1983 Tigers are definitely proof of that, but I also believe adversity can build unity and draw men closer together At least in our case it did. I am very proud of this football team. Here was a group of men who didn't know the meaning of the word quit At one point in our season we were as emotionaly low as a team could be. having lost four in a row including our homecoming game and a loss to cross-town rival Central. From here this team picked themselves up by their bootstraps and fought their way back to respectability, winning four of their last five games Coach Geiser- Men Let us Pray. Pray in your own way. Pray not to win for God willing we shal. Pray to give one hundred percent r of your body. Pray that no one on this footbal team or on the opponents team gets hurt tonight. And men I want you to thank God that you can play for the Grand Junction Tigers, and I thank God he has allowed me to coach you. Good luck. God Bless you. I love you guys Coach. Colo. VoUeyboH Girls Tie for Fourth Place. The Tiger girls, finishing 10-8 overall and tieing for fourth in the league, had this to say about their season: The Farmington trip was great. We played excellent in the tournament and ended up taking second overall. It was tons of fun! The team has played some close matches and one that really stuck out in the girls' minds was their first match against Central. After being beaten in the first game, the Tigers came back to win the next two. Team work is essential in volleyball and the girls feel they demonstrated their skills well at the second Montrose game. To put it bluntly We killed 'em! Senior player Debbie Conklin had this to say about the game, The best game would have to be the second time we played Montrose, which just happened to be parents night. All five seniors gave their parents a rose. That really got us 'psyched' for the game. Everyone was ready. We all worked as a team, and showed how well we could play. We were awesome! I don't think anyone could have beaten us. But most of all it was fun. Everyone was relaxed and out to have a good time. We proved to ourselves we that we could do it. age 53 Tiger Times Grand Junction, Colo Volleyball Opposite page, photo 1 Stephanie Kelly sets up the spike while teammates Debbie Conklin. This might have been true since nine of the games played during the season were as close as two baskets. It was a season of ups and downs. The two devastating losses to Fruita were offset by an early-season victory and a win in the all-important District Tournament which allowed the Tigers to represent the Southwestern League in the State AAA Tournament despite finishing fourth in league play during the regular season. In the State Tournament. Junction was defeated in the opening round by the Sterling Tigers, who later went on to win the state title. Page 66 Tiger Times Grand Junction. They finished the season at 21-2, which was the most games won in a season by a HS girls basketball team. Making their way to the state tournament, the Tiger girls took first in the Southwestern League Tournament by beating Montrose 45-30 March 3, in the finals of the District Tournament. In the semifinals, the Tigers had a close game against Fruita, squeeking by at 65-62. Two weeks later the girls traveled to the Eastern Slope for the State 3-A Tournament. There the Tigers had to defeat two tough teams to get to the Championship game. In the first round they drew St. Mary's Academy and defeated them by a score of 68-49, and in the semifinals took Sterling 63-52. HERRERA STATE CHAMP 132 lbs. 1983-1984 Paul Herrera, the Tiger's 132 pound wrestler, had an outstanding season with an overall record of 27-1. The senior wrestler placed first in three of four preseason tournies. His only loss came to Todd Duhnon of Olathe at the Warrior Classic in the semifinal round. Herrera ended up placing third in the tournament and going undefeated for the rest of the season. He then became SWL district champion and earned his first birth to the State Tourney becoming the Tigers first state champion since 1971. Herrera, describing his feelings after he won said, It's finally happened ; it's the greatest feeling in the world. Mike Vasquez, the young 112 pound junior started out his season at a slow pace. Placing in three out of four tournaments. Mike came on strong towards the end of the season. Mike went into the district meet seated fourth. He lost to Rowdy Suckla from Cortez in the semi-final round and wrestled Brian Rush of Fruita for second place then won a State birth by defeating him 4-2 in overtime. Mike had to wrestle a pigtail to get into the State bracket. He earned a lot of respect from the wrestlers and spectators both by beating the two State favorites and eliminating one in the pigtail round, He ended up placing 7th in State and will be a top contender for the 1984-1985 season Here is just a little something to think about: When the going gets rough it's hard to keep going and it's easier to quit, but those extra minutes you put in and laps you run, can be the turning point in your career. Only champions have the heart to keep going and push themselves until they can't go any further. They reach deep down inside and push themselves a little further. If everyone had this attitude we could all be state champions. You have the tools and the ability, just put them to work and give it your all. Page 76 Tiger Times. Grand Junction. How many? Thirty years. he said, I'm forty-two years old, he joked. For his many years of successful coaching. Fanning was awarded a plaque and a ring by the Colorado High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame. The group's annual awards banquet was held March 16 in Denver. Fanning received the award on the basis of the number of years of head coaching. However, the organizers also award points to prospective recipients on the basis of state and conference coach of the year nominations, and state and conference championships. For Fanning, victories and success probably will never become extinct. Wade Wagner tip toes through the infield Batting another run in Page 80 Tiger Times Grand Junction. Colo. Baseball Tigers find seventh inning fatal The Varsity boys baseball team fought their toughest battle at the end of the season, but the seventh inning proved to be total. Proceeding a 9-1 romp over Central. the team enjoyed first place and a full-game lead over Central for two weeks by going on the road and defeating Montrose, Durango and Cortez. Then bad news came. Their next two games were rained out. This forced them to have a ten day layoff from one league game Jirn Dyer takes him out at first to another. When the season was completed, the Tigers were 7-3 in league play after going 3-3 following the layoff. The team was defeated by Durango's five seventh inning runs and a homerun in the seventh by Fruita. The Tigers finished second in the SWL when Central defeated Durango with a seventh inning Rally. CO Sophomores Sophomores WHAT IS A SOPHOMORE? A sophomore Is a teen-ager who is making that transition from junior high to adulthood. He is one who con not remember the simplest algebra forumla, but can tell you the exact second the bell will ring. He. somehow, can never find the inspiration to do his art assignment but can doodle over ever square inch of a desk top He is the one who wanders down the halls on opening day of school like a little boy while trying, at the same time, to impress the girls that he is Mr. Wonderful . She is the one who overdresses one day and comes to school in ragged sweats the next. They are the ones who at the first assembly can't find where they are supposed to sit and think class competition is a new test given in the Counseling Center. She is the girl that all the junior and senior boys are trying to impress because they struck out with their own class. But they're the ones that each year give new life and hope to the tired old buildings. They are the brunt of every joke and prank, but they can always respond with hope, Next year we'll be juniors. Foreign languages have a greater effect on a student's learning when students get deeply involved. Fortunately students participating in the foreign language program at GJHS have the opportunity through French Club, German Club. Spanish Club, and Latin Club to experience language outside of the classroom. Each club had several activities during the year. French, German and Spanish clubs all participated in soccer games after school, also French Club kept busy planning their Thanksgiving Party and Christmas Banquet. Eat your heart out Lenard Burnstien Spring carnival 1984. held Sat. April 14. turned out to be the largest activity planned by Executive and Student council all year It was a part of the Springfest week, and they could not have picked a better day to hold it. After weeks of continuous cold weather which shifted between rain and snow, April 14 proved to be warm and sunny. The main goal behind Carnival “84'' according to Head Boy Charlie Kercheval and Head Girl Terri Chappell was to have a fun project that everyone- students, teachers, parents, and even the community would be involved in. This goal was not only reached but far exceeded In many ways ■H Carnival activities included: a mud volleyball tournament, mud tug ot war. 27 various booths sponsored by school, civic, community, and parent's clubs, a bar-b-que. an outside movie, Fastbreak , a day long drawing with prizes from local businesses, and entertainment throughout the day which included: breakdancers. an airband finals competition, a student singer and a student guitarist, a Jazz band, and a barbershop quartet. t Wik Carnival It is hoped that Carnival will become an annual event to continue to keep the spirit and pride at Grand Junction High School as high as It was in 1984. 176 tg • , CAST: Jeff Babcock Maralee McVean Wally Sykes Kellin Olson Shannon McGee Wendy Maurin Wendy Wainright Dawn Morford Rhonda Schutter Kim Lashbrook Na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na -na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-n a-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na -na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na -na-na- n a-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na -na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-n a-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na -na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na -na- na-na-na-na-na- na-na -n a-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na -na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na- na-na-na-na -na-na-n a-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na -na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na -na-na -na-na -na-na -na-na-n a-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na -na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-a-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-n -na-na-na-na-na-na-na na-na-na-na-na-na-na-a-na-na-na-na-na-na-na -na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na na-na-na-na-na-na-na a-na-na-na-na-na-na--na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na a-na-na-na-na-na-na-na--na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na -na-na-n a-na-na-na-na-na-na-na -na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na- na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-n a-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na -na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-n a-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na -na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-n a-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na -na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-n a-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na -na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-n a-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na -na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na. Black and orange balloons fly high on graduation day. We strive not to equal; but to excel. A familiar graduation memory. Presidential candidate speaks at “84” Graduation GJHS history was made on May 22.1984 when Senator Gary Hart of Colorado, a current Democratic presidential candidate, arrived to address the graduating class. When Senator Hart accepted the invitation to be the commencement speaker he was not entered in the presidential race. But with his new prominence came a number of other things that affected the graduation ceremonies. So, complete with Secret Service men and news casters from 50 major stations and networks. Senator Hart flew into town. In his address he stressed the importance of public involvement in politics and it's continuation. The graduating class featured eight valedictorians who boasted a 4.0 grade point average. A total of 277 seniors received the honors. Senator Gary Hart speaks to Graduating seniors The 1984 validictory address was given by Tom Patterson and John Moore. Excerpts follow: Three years ago we began a journey that culminates today. During this time we have experienced moments of joy. fear, excitement, and sorrow. We always, however, kept our sights on one goal: graduation day. Today we will terminate our high school days by receiving our diplomas.....a symbol that declares our public schooling is complete. It represents all that we have learned from Grand Junction High School, not only the facts and figures but the real life lessons as well. Our years at GJHS have given us experiences for which we are in debt. We learned about life, of friendships and of hardships. We learned how to laugh and how to cry. We learned about ourselves and about others. Perhaps the greatest lesson we learned is how to believe in ourselves. John Moore We will be faced with a lot of decisions: Voting, raising children, and so on. To these decisions, let us bring some common sense. We have developed something important here at Grand Junction High School. Let us not fear the Hurdles which lie ahead, for if we keep our heads clear and rely on our inner abilities, these difficulties will become opportunities to challenge our desire to make life in this society and on this planet a little better. So as we venture into the world on this day, let us never lose faith in our ability to make sound decisions, lead happy lives and improve the welfare of generations yet to come. Tom Patterson DESIDERATA GO PLACIDLY AMID THE NOISE HASTE, REMEMBER WHAT PEACE THERE MAY BE IN SILENCE. AS FAR AS POSSIBLE WITHOUT surrender be on good terms with all persons.
