CARL CLEMENT COX April 11, 1969 One of the Nation's great coaches and great men died this evening. Carl Cox passed away at 6:10 p.m. of an apparent heart attack. The Nation has had and will have many great coaches and men. Carl Cox must be rated among the best. For twenty years, he devoted every waking moment to helping young people. To the hundreds of athletes and students who learned under Carl Cox, he was a coach, a teacher, a friend and idol. He was dedicated. He was deeply religious. He not only taught and coached, he also counseled. Hundredsof athletes who wore the colors of Grand Junction High School into athletic competition will never forget Carl Cox. He had thousands of friends in Western Colorado. Friends made through athletics, dedication, honesty, fairness and religion. Carl Cox was well known in the metropolitan area, too. Many times thousands watched as the coach and his Grand Junction Tigers stood proudly to accept a State Championship athletic trophy. A trophy hard-earned but well-earned. Carl Cox was fair. Every athlete had a chance. He went out of his way to encourage and help those from the minority groups. Because of this fairness. Western Colorado, and indeed the Nation, has more and better solid citizens. Opposing coaches tried desperately to beat Carl Cox, but always with respect. The respect that only those involved in athletics can have for a champion. Carl Cox was a man's man. A champion's champion. He leaves us now, but he shall not be forgotten. To his wife and three children, I offer my deepest personal sympathy and thanks for having known this great man for so many years. Carl Cox is gone. May he rest in peace. May he indeed dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Gene Rozelle
