The class of '53 sponsored a coke machine in the alcove by the east stairs to help finance their senior day, and by way of something new played host 1i1'411Al11rIff1',w111..N'm'7'f'f1lI'1l to the juniors at a banquet. The class play given during the second semester was the classical Little XVonien done in the modern dress and setting. To lead them in fun and activities the class chose Raleigh Van Deren, Diane Smith, and Nancy Anderson. As prexv, good natured Raleigh handles his duties with quiet, efficient dispatch. Aiding him in ironing out details and problems. Diane, vice- president, proved an able right hand helper. Dark haired Nancy' had the responsibility of arranging dates, writing letters, and keeping minutes up to date. Many beautiful and well built floats were entered in the parade which honored Queen Gladys Edwards and her four attendants. This year's royalty. instead of having the traditional queen's float. rode in a convertible. XlC'earing their flashy orange and black uniforms, the band and Pep Club performed impressively at half-time ceremonies at the game at which time also, the queen was crowned by Co-captains Hugh Cook and glared Morris. ln one of their best games of the season, the Tiger football team defeated the Colorado Springs eleven. 26-12, to end the first day of festivities. Climaxing Homecoming, 1952 was the dance held the following night in a Colorful Colorado setting in the high school gym. XVith Big Ed as the line mentor and Carl Cox tutoring the backfield. the Tigers scored a total of 104 points to their opponent's 64. Coaches XY'halley and Cox utilized the split-T formation to good advantage as they saw their team wind up the campaign with a record of three wins, three ties. and two losses. This record is one to be very proud of coming from a squad that lacked experience at the first of the season. During their first year as managers of the varsity, Dave Gallegos and Gary Shultz proved themselves most valu- able to the coaches and players. -rq1,tr1i1l.v. fI1.w'1ls-.s- u1'unvi1'l fmfl 1Ir'f'41i.s'i1'1'f1fliu11.s' +'9'H f ' .QTVQN T .-'.-31'?'uk'A?- Q y i. lf Q I ixtqngyx .M 5,181 . Two weeks later the season opened for the Bengals against Price, Utah. The year was. for the most part, not hampered by costly injuries. In the Price contest. Kenny Stringer received a slight neck injury which later kept him out of action for the entire year. Bob Vfhiteside, reserve fullback and end, was taken out of play with a sprained ankle in the Colorado Springs game and was out for some time. Thompson, Unrein, and Klumb served in the backfield, while Larry booted all the extra points. Ralph and Dick saw action as defensive halfbacks, and both gained valuable experience while turning in commendable jobs. Carson, Coulson, and Games also received experi- ence which they can use to good advantage in the rest of their playing years. The remaining squad members served as the much-needed reserve strength for the team. Pork Manown, Bruce Nelms, joe O'Dell, Walter Gordon, and Bob Whiteside, although seeing limited service did their part in substitut- ing for the players who were injured or who just needed a breather. Bob Whiteside was kept out of play by an acute ankle injury for a big part of the season. For their first year in a league where there is good stiff competition, the Bengals finished their conference play with a coveted second place position. This is a fine record for a club that started the season with a green team, having only two returning lettermen. In warmup games before they entered Southern Confer- ence competition, the Tigers faced Price, Montrose, and Rifle in non-conference tilts. As visitors, the team en- countered the Carbon Dinosaurs, Sept. 12. Carbon came through with a lone touchdown in the second half to defeat the Tigers 6 to 0. Returning home to contest their first home game of the season, the Bengals overpowreed their longtime rivals, the Montrose Indians, to the tune of 14 to 0. The following week the squad ran into an- other tough opponent but came out with a 6 to 6 tie with the strong Rifle Bears. October IO saw the Tigers traveling to Laramie for their first league contest. On the road again, Oct. 18, the Tigers journeyed to Canon City and defeated the prison city team 25 to 0 for their first league win. With five games under their belts, the Bengals took on Colorado Springs for the annual Homecoming fracas. The Springs squad fell to defeat 26 to 12, giving the Tigers their first victory over the Terrors in four years. Seven days later the Bengals trekked to Peublo to contest the Central Wildcats. The game, played under windy conditions, resulted in a 7 to 7 draw. With a two-won, two-tied record in conference games, the Tigers faced the Pueblo Centennial Bulldogs for the league crown. Losing in the closing minutes of play, the Bengals dropped a well-played tussle 20 to 13, to end their season. Page 85 '3 I-'irxt Roux' Carrol. Ilnnniny. Booth. Fruita's superiority in personnel gave them a 19 to 0 decision over the junctionites. The Jay- Vees Wcnt on to lose to three more tough crews including Central, Z0 to 6, Olathe, 35 to Og and Meeker, 49 to 19.
