We have chosen as our theme the principle of harmonyg the school is represented as an immense band, with our principal as the mas- ter director and the four claisses as members of a quartet, the childish treblesn of the Freshmen chiming in with the basses of the Senior Class. It is harmony of color and line which makes art work beautiful, harmony of sound which makes musi-c, harmony among teach- ers and students, and among the students themselves. which makes our school life smooth, happy and successful. The staff gratefully acknowledges the art work done for this annual under the super- vision of Miss Cecelia Cardman. l2l it .: q b5,ngg .. S up 44' R Srl' Dedica tion To William Gould, who has done so much to increase our interest in music, we, the staff of the 1934 Tiger, respectfully dedicate this volume. As director of the band, orchestra, girls' und boys' glee clubs, the Junior High band, and the Hungry Five, we feel that he best represents an 'embodi- ment of one person to whom we may dedicate El book using HARMONY as its theme. ul 1 , 3 i1,f,i ,I f-'N Zin ,EHqPIIIU1'icIIlI WILLIAM QBILLYJ PHILLIPS December 18 1918 Januarv 26 1924 FMIL1 PFTRIE 1917 Apr1l28 1934 . Junction high school, to leave their never-to-be forgotten remembrances. Th-ey were successfully led by their president, Robert Sternberg. During their Sophomore year David Meens proved an able leader. Four men also lettere-d in athletics. Still coming up in the world, or rather in school, they entered th-eir Junior year with Herbert Jolley as class president. This year Sterling Smith was elected to fill the office of business manager of the Orange and Black and the Tiger. Eight men lettered in football, and four in basketball. Then came the final year, Joe Biggs .4-ef' X aff' :me ga 'O A5599 A 4 L , Q. YC 4, was elected president. Fourteen men re- ceived letters in football, and seven were awarded in basketball. Most of the outstanding men in track were seniors. In December the Seniors entertained the Juniors at th-e annual prom. This was carried- out in modernistic decora- tions of black and silver. The Senior class play Polly With a Past, directed by Dora Smith, was well enacted by the cast. Fifteen Seniors were taken into the Quill and Scroll Chapter, an honorary society for high school journalists. Thirty-one members of the Senior class were elected into the National Honor Society. This year loads of Freshmen were seen at basketball and football and other activ- ities, supporting them with all their might. The Piggleteria stunt of the Freshmen class was the fish pond. fSuckers were found among all upper- classm-enl . It appears that the class this year will travel a studious as well as an active and enthusiastic road throughout their remaining three years, for there are nu- merous classmen with high averages. Some are Helen Roe, Fern Osborn, Betty Lou Allen and Barbara Jane Prinster. Mr. Holt predicts a sporting future for many of the boys of this remarkable class. He thinks that from the number of boys who took part in the sports and who did some outstanding work there will be many heroes for the girls to worship. A few who have been outstand- ing in sports are: Robert Cardona, Phil- lip Baca, Jess Marble, Charles Turner, Bill Stephens, Marvin Hamlin and Gil- bert Sada. l41l , , Ifr-ml Rs-xr, lwft tw right Jim Ilufforvl, Sh-wart I :u1tr'll, Marvin Iiamliiu, Frank l.:iIlo, Luis Jfnws, Ida John- Hll. THE ORANGE AND BLACK NEWS This year the Orange and Black News stood up and openly defied depression. CWe hated to use that overwork-ed word again but we were forced to.J Well, anyway, the O. 8: B. News just gave Mr. Depression one big razzberry and started off with a bang with Rex Taylor as editor and Albert Cox and George Earl Click as business managers. Not one word was said about printing fewer papers just because the days when you saw one whole dollar at a time were few and far between. Although this year's paper was only half as large as last year's, sixteen is- sues were printed, in contrast to the five issues printed last year. The paper was a four-page, five-column paper, with the exception of a special eiht- page edition which was issued during the band tournament. One thousand five i481 hundred papers were printed and a pa- per pres-ented to every visiting member of the band tournament. Since the O. St B. News came out reg- ularly every two weeks, the students received news that was news instead of stories that were stale with age. The journalism class was divided into four groups, Each took the staff position for four issues of the paper, while the re- maining class members act-ed as report- ers. Conducting the class in this manner gave everyone in class a chance to serve with a staff position. Rex Tavlor, Alb-ert Cox. Aileen Ford and Mr. Youmans attended the twelfth Annual Journalism Conference in Boul- der, January 20. The O. Sz B. News was included in the newspaper exhibit there. This year the purchase of a student body ticket entitled a student to a sub- scription to the paper. 5211771 TIGER STAFF Back Row-Thomas Tope. Originally organized to usher and patrol at school functions, the squad had so evidenced its usefulness that it is now regard-ed as an invaluable junior annex to the City Police Force. Its duties include directing traffic and keeping order at Elks conventions, pa- rades, and like affairs. During band tournaments each individual member oft-en works from fourteen to sixteen hours a we-ek for the school. They help at football and basketball games, usher at school plays, and act as general handymen during Teachers' Convention. Members are chosen from volunteers by Mr. Hirons and Mr. Roe, advisor of SQUAD the squad. Only students who are ca- pable and whose conduct is exemplary in every way are considered or allowed to remain on the force. The boy who has made the best rec- ord, and shown himself to be the most level-headed and reliable in the previous year is chosen as the chief by Mr. Roe. The two li-eutenants are chosen by Mr. Roe in conference with the chief. For more efficient organization, the force this year was divided, into three squads of six boys each. Wherever and whenever the police squad has been of service they have re- ceived the highest commendation. They have compiled an enviable record and one which will be added to in the future. l51l if aryl? TK . . ' It is a well-known fact that a team with a good rooting section behind it will fight harder and make greater efforts to win. In this way our yell leaders did their part toward victory. Membership was increased from forty-five to sixty-seven, and nearly compl-ete instrumentation has been ob- tained. The addition of band students from Mt. Gould ORCHESTRA Grand Junction High School Orches- tra has really made a great deal of progress during the school year of 1933-34. It has loyally supported the school, class plays, given public con- certs, radio concerts and played com- bination concerts with the high school band, thereby giving the students a larger amount of experience. Miss Dearwyn Sardoni, concert mas- ter of the orchestra this year is a true artist of the violin. It was through her i581 excellent leadership that the string sec- tion held together and it will c-ertainly be with regret that the orchestra lets her go this year as a graduating senior. The graduating seniors are: Dearwyn Sardoni, Eleanor Jane Walker, Roxana Hinton, Lester Charles, Hayward Shull, John Wilson and Leroy Thompson. The orchestra was rated as Good, in the annual Western Slope Band and Music Tournament held h-ere April 26, 27, and 28. ,. ,. I-irst ln-tim-. SENIOR CLASS PLAY Seniors presented a three-act com-edy, Polly With a Past, as their contribu- tion to the list of Senior class plays given in the Grand Junction high school. Th-e play was presented February 14 and 15 in the high school auditorium. After several hours of suspense on the part of the students who were try- ing out, and several hours of delibera- tion and discussion of th-e victims by a group of t-eachers, the cast was chosen as follows: Marvin Mulvihill, Albert Madsen, Sterling Smith, Merl Mitchell, Louis Storm, Loyd Perry, Thomas Mc- Fadden and Thelma Smith, Aileen Ford, Doralyn Chambers, Ruth Day and Louise Near. Thelma Hurd acted as prompter. it Q a 'amwf.l,'5 S G: X Qi A SIMM: Albert Mads-en was cast in one of the leading parts, but because of illness was unable to continue. Thomas McFadden, who had a smaller part, took Albert's part. Everett Marsden filled Thomas Mc- Fadden's former part. Although Ever- ett and Thomas had less than a week for rehearsals, the final performance did not show the lack of rehearsal. A large part of the credit for success of the play goes to Miss Smith, who di- rected the play, supervised the construc- tion of scenery, and took charge of ticket selling and advertising. New and permanent scenery was built for the play. After the Senior class play the Dramatic Club took charge of the scenery and will finish paying for it. l59l Bar-k Row, left to rightA-Evelyn Sue Talley, Stanley Berger, Jane Christman. E v elyn Sue Talley The night of Friday, April 13, was no jinx for Nothing but the Truth, the Junior class play, which was presented to a full house in the auditorium on that date. Nothing but the Truth had the dou- ble distinction of being the first play ever given by the Junior class in Grand Junction high school, and also the first play to be acted on the remodeled stage. l60l The play, a comedy in three acts showed the complications which arose when Bob Bennett made up his mind to tell the pure, unadulterated truth for twenty-four hours in order to win a 810,000 bet which he made with his boss, Mr. Ralston, and a couple of other fellows. Nothing but the Truth was a fast, clever comedy, well directed, well acted and Well re-ceived. c em, 561 Xvxls X 'Q -I I1ANXn 'iunvi .,! , xfllif . -, U 6 ' Nike. it ,J 0 , i l, -1 I--ll ? 5 X Ya 0 X ' NNN l FIRST NIGHT FOOTBALL GAME The new floodlights at Lincoln Park were first used, on September 29, when the Olathe Pirates came to Grand Junc- tion and were defeated by the Tig-ers by a score of 19-6. Approximately 2,000 fans were present at this game. The new flood lighting system was installed in Lincoln Park about two Weeks before l62l this game and seemed to handicap the Pirates up to the last quarter of the game, wh-en they unleashed their pent- up energy and started marching down the field for a touchdown. All of the Tiger touchdowns were made early in the game: two by pass-es and one by line plunges. FOOTBALL The 1933 season started with sixty- four boys reporting for practice, eleven of whom were lettermen from the pre- vious season. The team was beaten only twice dur- ing the season, those being non-confer- ence games. The only mar in the Tiger confer-ence standing was a tie game with Fruita, the score being 0 to 0. After winning the western slope championship the Tigers tried to get a game with Salida for the state cham- pionship, but Salida refused to play, due to the lateness of the season. Five members of the team placed on the first all-conf-erence team, and. two on the second conference team. Low scores were turned in at almost every game, and th-e Tigers entered the Glenwood tournament in fourth place. At this time the team started for its peak and came out in second place. They entered the Delta tournament in the first position from th-eir district. Al- lil-ll though they were picked as favorites to win the Western Slope championship, they lost to Delta, and went to the State tournament in second place. Lettermen this year were: Crump, Broady, Jolley, Nesbitt, Ausmus, Biggs, Derryberry, McHugh, Wixom, Grant, Lampshire, Craig, Chadwick and Garber. Three Tiger men were placed on the All Conference team at Delta. They were: Ausmus, lst All Conference, Der- ryb-erry, lst utility: Broady, 2nd team. As a result, the Tigers were victors in the Delta Relays held in April, with four firsts out of six events, and were losers in the De Beque meet, the Fruita-Tiger dual meet and the Dis- trict meet. Those men who were outstanding this year in the relays are Broady, Pond, Rice, Holseybrook, Hotchkiss, Keough, Harry Jones, Lloyd Perry, Ezra Chil- dress, James Craig and Jimmy McHugh. Ed Fahrmeyer was best in the broad jump, having won two out of the three meets. Ford and Keough heavedl the discus and javelin. Loss of Bill Jones and Keener in the mile and lack of material in the field events accounted for most of the inabil- ity of the Tiger track squad to come up to the performance of previous years in the meets this season. Those who will probably make letters are Hotchkiss, Broady, Pond, Holsey- brook, Craig, McHugh, Keough, Jones, Youngerman, Fahrmeyer, Ford, Nesbitt, Rice, Perry and Vaughn.
