Challenge of 1946 By JACKIE HOSS '48, JOYCE CRAWFORD '47 That these dead shall not have died in vain - - - When these memorable words were spolcen, it was every peace loving nation's sincere hope and desire that they would never again be forced to asli themselves, HHave these dead died in vain? But once again on December 7, 1941, radio announcers broke the peaceful Sunday silence with the terrifying news of our loss at Pearl Harbor. This was the beginning of four darlc years of perilous warfare. The shoclcing news shoolc the heart of every American. ln the silence that followed the broadcasts the people realized that they must do something, anything, to preserve the American ideals of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The realization of the immediate fighting to be done turned carefree boys into grim fighting men overnight. Throughout America wherever possible boys abandoned their present way of life--their worlc, their families, and their study,-to answer their nation's call. Recruiting stations assigned every volunteer and draltee to specific divisions of the military service,-United States Navy, U. S. Army, and the U. S. Marine Corps. Strange fascinating experiences soon confronted these service men. Following the necessary training preparing them for overseas duty, they found themselves in various parts of the world.-in strange lands and on small islands unknown to them before. Little did these men realize that these insignificant places were to become the battle grounds of decisive battles which would later till important pages in our growing nation's history. Five
