After the terrilie toil of weeks, the surmountin g of obstacles which seemed unsurmountable, the annual is out. Perhaps you have always regarded the staff as a group of favored beings, who get a maximum amount of honor for a minimum amount of work. If I3-r-i-e-k-b-a-t-s spell honor, that's the ease. Perhaps this is the opinion of you, who have never hounded teaehers for their pietures, then sat up all night geting them ready for the engraversg you, who have never hunted budding authors 1o their lair for long delayed articles, you who ha ve never persuaded hard-hearted business men into taking a full page, after they have sworn they would not take an inehg you, who have never lain awake nights, trying to devise some new rounterfeit system so as to get the cash to pay bills, long since due, but if you have done all these things, and at the same time had to eonvinee irate teachers that you were burning the midnight oil to get you r studies, then you are oompetent to sit in judg- ment on our sins of omission and supposed partiality. NVe leave it to such critic-s to eonnnend the omission, but eoneerning that which we have written -we have striven to represent truly and impartially every phase of lligh Sehool work and to portray the varied activities of this year, so that in future years it will bring to mind delightful memories of G. l. ll. S. Two new sections have been added, Alumni and one for Autographs. Q But whatever your opinion may be, we wish to assure you that we have honestly and earnestly tried to put into this issue of the Purple and Gold all that We were eapable of giving. We ean there- fore eonsole ourselves with this quotation: Art thou little, do thy little well and for thy eom fort know, Great men ean do their greatest work, no better th an just so. TWELVE Boost!!!! In this sehool, as in every other, there are many varieties of students, boosters, knockers, dead ones, etc. CYou know what we meanj. Not trying to classify ourselves with gifoup number two, we intend to mention a few weak points in which improvement could certainly be made. For instanee, our Literary Societies, our '4Debaters and Glee Clubs Call. XVith the talent we have had mani- fested in Grand Island lliwh Sehool on a few ocea sions it seems that something worth while could YN 3 1 he accom Jlished in these lines. Now to Jrove we clon't belonv' to the aforesaid '7'l'0U we wish t.: 7 P' 1' ! commend the spirit shown by the students at the football games. But who could help but he enthus- iastic when we have such good teams? Now that the small beginning has been made it should then be easier to work up pep in other lines and put Grand Island on the map, for a live high sehool is one of the best advertisements of a live town, so, Everybody Boost!!! is a good motto for our school. Did you ever think of the boosters outside the High School. llow about the advertisers? lf it were not for them, their loyal support, how could the Purple and Gold be put out with so little financial aid from the students. Let the students now strive to make li. I. ll. S. a school of whieh the business men will be proud and glad to support. Now, again, we say, EVERY- BODY BO0S'I'!!!! XVe, the Staff, take this means of thanking' all those who have aided us in making' this issue of Purple and Gold the best ever. We were l,H,,,. . 1, 15. 111 rf brave and did our utmost to bear the slams and kicks which were in store for us and had a smile and a kind word for each tormentor. NVe were so taken up with our studies the first year that we did not have much time for social activities. lt was difficult to recognize ourselves underthe name of Sophomores and to realize that our first year of High School was over. But we started out right by appointing a committee to look after the class pin. We had some difficulty in deciding, but linally did come to a decision. Although some of the other classes do not like our pin, we think we have the most unique pin in 'lligh School. During the winter and early spring of this year we had a number of social events which will be remembered by all. When we reached our Junior year we felt that our days of frivolous play were over, and we be- gan to think more about the big things of the world and wondered if we, too, could not accomplish something worthy of niention. All during this term we studied so as to set a good example to the Sophomores, who would soon take our places. This year, a whole, proved a success, and we had a number of social events which will never be forgotten. And now those self-same Juniors the 4'Seniors of '17, This year is truly Senior. 'We are young and impetuous. Vtle do not mean to claim credit for everything, but it is evident that the Senior l'lass is this year the superior class. During the past week or two the Seniors have been busy ex- changing pictures with all their classmates, whom they will soon have to leave. lVe have ont had many festivities during this year-the only one of great importance was a dance, given at the Lied- erkranz, which was greatly enjoyed by all. As we look back over the past four years in the Grand Island lligh School and recall many pleas- ant memories, a tinge of sadness comes over us, as we realize that it will soon be a thing of the past. Let us now face the world with the same spirit th at has carried us through four successful years at Grand Island High School. M. M., '17, SIXTEEN ERNEST NEUMANN BUSINESS Class Pres. 4. Asst. Eugene Johnson, President Margaret Cosh, Vice President Kate Kelly, Secretary and Treasurer In the heginning of 1914, there was ereated the February elass ot 1918. As we, the members of the elass, entered G. l. H. S., to plaee our offerings at the shrine of knowledge, we were hopeful, eon- fident, and even arrogant. llowever, we soon began to notiee the Sophomores and envy their digni- iicd far-away positions. Then, we caught oeeasional glimpses of the Seniors as they strolled aimlessly thru the eorridors, and we heggan to think it impossible for us ever to rise to their ranks. But, this elass has grown, not in numbers, hut in quality, to the ranks of upper elassnien. A very distinguished elass are we who shall he the first elass in the history of this High School to graduate in the middle oi' the School year or in l ehruary. Vile have now finished three and a half very sueeess- ful years. As we stand on the hrink of heeoniing full-fledged Seniors, we look haek with pride at what we have aeeomplished, and forward with hope and the determination of distinguishing' ourselves in the future, even more than we have in the past. NVell, if almost sooms impossible, hui it has been two years and a half since some well-hehaved pupils camo over to The lligh School in February, 1915. IT was a. cold and windy day that a group of happy looking hoys and girls camo from the lloward and Dodge Schools, knowing that on arrival, many funny tliiugs would he said about them. NVhen they arrived at tho High School most of the older studoiits had loft, buf here and There were some, eagerly stretching their necks to get a glimpse 'FHTRTY-SIX of the so-called 'fFreshies. They took everything good-naturedly the first part of the semester and after a week or two the jokes and funny stuff D ecame stale. The first semester passed rather slowly, hut hefore they knew it they were no longer f'l resh- ies , but bright, wide-awake t'Sophies. Their first year in lligh School passed uneventfully, the only thing of much importance was the selection ofthe class officersg the colors which are red and whiteg and the class flower, which is a mixed earuation of red and white. During the fourth semester a weenie roast took place one moonlight night in October at the ttosda grove southeast of town. The fifteen-minute trip was made in cars. After a good fire was lmuilt, all joined in roasting weenies and marshmallows. Then games were played and stories told around the fire. Since the erowd was small the Meats again went the rounds and at ll o'eloek all declared this a most enjoyable time and departed for home. Un October the 28th the class was entertained at a ll'allowe'en party at the home of Elvira Seed, which was enjoyed hy all who were present. The rooms were beautifully decorated in black witches and yellow pumpkins, the pumpkins furnishing enough light s0 as to give 3. spookey effect. UPUIIOS flllil STOVE' telling made the evening pass very rapidly, and at ll a luncheon was served. At 12 o'cloek all departed for home and reported a most delightful time. Sometime later the class met in Miss Jones, room t0 select the Class pin. Several meetings were held before they decided upon the pin. The Glass received their pins December Slth and they cer- tainly were appreciated lmy all. Now the 1-lass has reached the stage where they are called Juniors, quite a distance from the time when they were called f'l reshies. So they grew and are still growing toward their highest aim. Un the 15th of March they held a class meeting for the purpose of electing new officers. They re-elected Oswald Michelmann, presidentg llowell lloneywell, vice-presidentg and Elisabeth Meyer, secretary and treasurer. They consider this experienced staff of officers very efficient. M. N. Paul Huston, President Mary Donigan, Secretary and Treasurer Lloyd Kelly, Vice President HOW friendly every One is! We thought as we looked around and saw broad smiles 011 the faces of the older students in the High School. But we soon found that it was not kindness of heart, but ourselves which had prompted those smiles. The cause of such 11l6I'I'llllCl1'E was easily ascertained for we were frequently addressed with such questions as, Well, how are the infants today? and, When did you desert the nursery? But We managed to keep our wits about us am greatly impressed our tormentors by quoting, . The membership ot' the Grand Island lligh School Alumni Association eonsists of graduates of our lligh School and the object ot the organization is the reviving and renewing ot' friendships and the soeial reunion of classmates. Its meetings are heltl reg-Ulm-ly onee eaeh year, the evening following the graduation exereises, with the newly graduated elass as guests ot honor. At the time of its organization, some twenty-live years ago, it numbered eighty-two members. This year, inc-luding the Hlflass of l9lT, it lllllllllglrs just eight hundred and titty members. The iirst reunion was held June l7, 1892, with an attendanee of sixty-live. This year will mark our twenty- sixth reunion and banquet. 'l'hese reunions and banquets were held at the hotels Palmer and Koehler until they outgrew the eapaeity, sinee whieh time they have always been held in the Lieder- kranz. At our banquets two songs are always sung, viz: 't'l'he Purple and l1old,'l four lligh St-hool eolorsl, words written by Mr. ll. J. J. llarr as superintendent, written by himseltf Mr. liarr, Mr. Matthews, and a few others have never missed a reunion or banquet ot the Alumni 215504-iafion, A sec-ond taet ot interest to this asso- eiation is that its first president, John l . This elass held the lead until the ,88's, with ten displaeed them, they in turn were distaneed by their immediate sueeessors, the '89's, with fifteen: then the '9O's, with twenty-one Hhusliiesn lorded over all for nine years, when the l99's. with twenty-six stepped in only to surrender to the l902's, with twenty-eight: then the '06's, with thirty-tour, the '08's, with thirty-seven, the '09's, with forty-two, the '11's, with forty-tour, the '12's, with forty- seven, the 'l3's, with fifty-two, and last year the 'l6's, with sixty-one, stepped into the lead, whieh they may retain for some time, as next year the Sehool begins the plan of graduating two elasses ear-h yearsa January and a June elass. ff ix:-5 - 1 10 F f -Q X I m my 15 : 4 Q SD MR. S., 1917. Immediately after the foot ball season, the boys started praetieing hard for basket ball, determined that they would develop a team whieh would make old ft. TI. proud of them. Under the management of Coach Harding they were daily trained in the use of the sphere. For several weeks they praetieed hard in antieipation ofthe first game, whieh was to be played with Central City. On the day of the game Uentral City eame here with the purpose of trimming G. T. to a nice seore. On the other hand, the boys were full of power that night, having elected Edward Swift as eaptain to lead them to vit-tory. The final seere was 35 to 19 in favor of tl. 1. lt was the first time in years that Grand Island had sue- eeeded in defeating Central City in basket ball. About this time a eity league was formed and Mr. lluyek and Mr. llarding det-ided to enter two teams in the League from the High School. Several games have been played in that organization and as the Animal goes to press the two lligh Sm-hool teams are tied for first plaee. The next game in the lligh Sehool sehedule was played with Ravenna lligh Sehool and as before, with a vietory for Grand lsland to the tune of' Sli to ll. Our next game was with our old enemy, Kearney lligh. lint they, too, went down before the onslaught of the tl. I. Five. Our boys then jour- neyed to llastings, where they met their first defeat. Their next game was played with Central City, where the fastest game of' the season was played. Owing to numerous handicaps they were defeated by the seore of 26 to 22. The following week they met the Ord team and were again defeated. The last game of the season was played at Kearney, in whieh the Kearney Five sueeeeded in taking the game. This ended the basket ball season. As allfihe boys, with the exeeption of one, will be with us next year, we expect a strong team. B. A. T. s1xTv-six TT - sp: XIX NI X One, Two, Three, Foiir. Speaking of angels, that just reminds me of the bible study class we had last evening, said the ll. S. girl. Uh, won 't you tell me what about it all J? queried Gretchen, H 'cause 1 know America's ways, nix already yet. t I'o make a long story short, proceeded the enthusiastic YH member, Uwe girls of the lligh School formed a club to help all the rest of the girls along. VVe do all we can to make thein happy. Seventy-five ofthe girls at sehool are in this club, and are active in helping others. VVe all work to- getlier all the time. Our leaders just tell us what to do, and we do it. Oh, there's always something doing, either a cabinet meeting, a bible study, and we meet with Mrs. XYills for that, she's the nicest lady! A party, a practical talk by a lady, a. reception party for the Freshmen, a candy sale, or a ban- quet of some sort. Oh, yes! We had a rainbow banquet, and our principal, Mir. Mathews, mind you, and Miss Sturdevant, and Miss Sheely, gave toasts Ctaking it for granted that Clretehen knew the per- sonsl and we had the most fun thenl XYe are always doing something to make money, and we make it, too, by candy sales, nickel cam- paigns, plays, programmes, and getting subscriptions for magazines. And then, of course, we spend it. VW: paid eight dollars National Board pledge, sent two delegates to Lake Geneva and that cost titty-five dollars each. We sent four girls to Beatrice to a conference this year, and then we bought a few pieces ot' furniture for the association rooms, and that isn't all, either, we go and visit the sick people and send them flowers and play Santa Claus to the poor children, and just be all- around friends to everybody. Gretchen jumped up and down at the thought ot playing St. Nicholas and being friends, and she clapped her hands tor joy, and said, Oh, won 't he be tea-kettled when l told it to Hans? and she darted away down the path with her milk cans as fast as her wooden shoes would let her. The girl stood in her path and watched her until she was out of sight. She smiled and said to herself, another one of 'our' new friends. H. C., 'l9. Three years and nine months ago, we Seniors hrought to this school a new class, conceived in wisdom and dedicated to the proposition that all students are created wise. Now we are engaged in our last program, telling how our class, or any other class, so conceived and so dedicated can long endure. We have conle to dedicate a portion of this school as a fine resting place for those who here gave us learning that we might graduate. lt is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. But in a larger sense we can not consecrate, we cannot hallow this school. The fornier students, wise and learned, who struggled here, have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract. This school will little note nor long l'Clll9llll7Gl' what we say here, lint it can never forget what we did here. ,It is for us, the going, rather to lie instructed here concerning the finished work, which they who have studied here have thus far so nohly completed. lt is rather for us to he instructed con- cerning the great task remaining hefore us, that from these honored teachers we take increased learning-for that cause for which we need the great- est anlount of wisdoin, that we here highly resolve, that we Seniors shall not have studied in vain, that this class, lretore you, shall have a great future and that the inenlory ot the Seniors lay the teachers and hy the students shall not perish in this school.
