Mr. John Gekas represented Grand Island College. ef nw Mr. Gekas spoke upon The Fountain of Civili- zation . His oration was worthy of much praise. It set forth the place of experience in civilization . and progress. The thought was deep and to the pq . 3. point, and was clothed in the best of language. The I ,..r- judges awarded him sixth place among the con- testants. Mr. Gekas's efforts are appreciated by 1, ' the College, and we predict a place for him among H I r Mx Pa V 'W ' kg.. X V. 1.'4 I Z the future leading public speakers of our country. by N.4,gi.W'J State Prohibition Contest The prohibition preliminary took place at Grand Island College on March 27th. The speakers for the evening were: Mr. Nyrop, with the oration The Stained Flag 5 Mr. Applegate, The Reformer's Dream g and Mr. Mills, America's Moral Obligae- tion . Mr. Nyrop Was awarded first honors and rep- resented Grand Island College in the state contest which took place at Hastings on April 21st. The judges gave Grand Island fourth place. The colleges represented at this meet Were: Grand Island, Omaha Theological Seminary, Wesleyan, and Hastings. l I

New members are selected each year from a try-out arranged by the club. The growing popularity of one act plays, led the Club this year to choose three short plays rather than one heavy production. The Club this year has been under the efficient leadership ship of Mrs. C. G. Ryan. The time she devoted to make the plays a success shows her interest in the College, and this was heartily appreciated by the members of the Club. H. The Debating League Our contract for a triangular debate with Kearney and Hastings was renewed this year. The question was: Resolved, That immigration into the United States should be further restricted by a literacy test. Preparation was made by several young men, and a preliminary contest was held to select the teams. Then the real work began. Too much credit can not be given to Miss Firth, our coach, for her untiring efforts. The debates were held on Friday, March 2d. Affirmative Team The affirmative was composed of one Senior and two Freshmen. The Senior had been on the affirmative team last year and had reasons to be on fighting terms as well as in a fighting trim. This team met with Hast- ings' negative team in the Grand Island College chapel. The battle was opened by Mr. Otis Applegate, who gave the history of the question and also the economical argument for it. He made a very good opening of the case. Mr. Huebner was the second affirmative speaker, and very vividly pictured the social evils of our immigrant districts and slums. Mr. Finley finished the debate of the affirmative. He spoke of the political situation and made a strong appeal for the needs of restriction for the preservation of our government. The rebuttals then followed in the same order, and each speaker did himself credit. The battle over, the treaty of peace de- clared our opponents victorious by a vote of two to one. This debate was one that would class high among intercollegiate de- bates. Negative Team. The Negative team journeyed to Kearney, Where they were very en- thusiastically received. The debate took place in the Normal Assembly, Where the competitive atmosphere was appropriately carried out by decora- tions and penants which greeted the speakers on both sides of the debate.
