As a conserva- tory the institution was organized in'l907, and since that time there has been a steady growth in every way until the standards are those of the large music centers. In equipment, the Conservatory is exceptionally well off, and, with the thorough course of study, the formal and practice re- cital programs, and the numerous departments, it is possible to give a well- rounded musical education to all who come here for study. The success which has been attained by the Conservatory has of course been entirely due to the splendid teachers who have made up the list of the faculty members. The head of the piano and theory departments for the past three years has been Carl Schluer, a brilliant musician, pianist, teacher and composer. Mr. Schluer is also a very gifted conductor and has done much for local music in that direction. The other piano instructors are: Mrs. R. J. Barr, Emily Anderson, Louise Hatch, Estella lvers Kelso, Ruth Edwards. For the past year W. A. Haberstro has been the head of the voice de- partment, who, besides his work in the Conservatory, has had charge of the College Glee Club, the English Lutheran choir, and has done considerable public recital work. Mr. Haberstro possesses a splendid voice, which he knows how to use to the best advantage. Jane L. Pinder, director of the Conservatory, is head of the violin de- partment. The course of study in this department is based upon the essen- tial elements of violin playing as it is understood by the great exponents of the art. Miss Finder is equipped in training and experience to give a well rounded musical and technical result to her pupils, always considering their individual needs. The Department of Expression and Physical Education is in charge of Florence M. Lied, a graduate of the Columbia School of Expression, where she has also taken much post-graduate work. Besides her Work in con- nection with the college and conservatory, Miss Lied has charge of the physical training in the Grand Island High School. Her work is a distinct asset to the school and greatly adds to the importance and value of the con- servatory. The work of the Conservatory is not confined to Grand Island alone. Mr. Schluer has classes in Central City and Silver Creek 3 Mr. Haberstro in Shelton and Kearney, Miss Anderson in Chapman, where she also teaches the public school music 5 Miss Hatch in Clarks, Miss Edwards in Wood River and Central City.

Although the work of the club was not as extensive as it should have been, the club was well received and highly praised at every town in which concerts were given. Its success was largely due to the splendid direction of A. Haberstro, head of the voice department of the Grand Island Conservatory. Besides directing the club, Professor Haberstro did the solo work. He has a wonderful personal- ity and a superb voice. Every time he made an appearance his singing brought forth great applause. In addition to the glees by the entire chorus and the solos by Professor Haberstro, the quartet-Messrs. Nicholas, Paine,
