We will try our very best to serve as leaders and makers of tomorrow's world. We will work for world peace and domestic improvements, but this isn't enough. We want today's leaders to understand, and to believe in us - in our ability to carry on where they will leave off. Through this edition of the Blue and Gold, published by the Class of 1957, we hope to give you a picture of the year's activities and to show you that these should make a definite contribution in our preparation for assuming our responsibilities as good American citizens. And filled us all with cheer. Our Mary Ann we'd have you know, Drove our Class when things were low, Her energy and spirit too- Did a lot to pull us through. Inta Mednis is her name, She did a lot to spread our fame, Through her art with pen in hand- We found that she was simply grand. Bill, our loyal treasurer, Kept the money straight, Cn the Held or at the desk, We think he's really great. 1 28 2 1 .I ee...hee...hee! Elvis? We, of the Student Council, set high ideals at the beginning of the year. Through hard work and cooperation of the Council and student body, we believe that some of our goals have been reached. Our meetings were called to order every Tuesday morning under the direction of our advisor, Mr. Hekhuis, and the following of- ficers: president, Judy Swingleg vice-president, Pearl Wliiteg recording secretary, Pat Schuettg and corresponding secretary-treasurer, Gindy Van Zylen. During the year our Council organized the social hours, sold shu-shus and reserved a student cheering section at football games, sup- ervised the sophomore class elections, invited the alumni to our Thanksgiving dance, had charge of the Christmas party, and filled Christ- mas baskets with canned goods. Also, we pre- sented three assemblies, ordered Student Coun- cil pins, sent representatives to the district meeting, and sponsored an informal dance dur- ing Homecoming. The highlights of the year were our very successful talent assembly and Spring Carnival. The officers feel that the Council this year has done a hne job in building school spirit and promoting the students' welfare. The officers who were elected in the fall were: President, Bob Swier, who because of complications had to resign, vice- president, Jeanie White, presided for the rest of the year. The minutes were taken by Marjorie Tripp, and Fred Borst served as assistant secretary, treasurer, janitor, etc. The boy who stood at the door with his hat in his hands was Larry Tindall. Our club had a party in the cafeteria and a lot of games and good food were enjoyed by all. Our main project this year has been to try and get trashy literature out of our community. This year, the Varsity Clubs main goal was to pay the balance on the whirlpool bath, which we purchased for the school last year. This goal was fulfilled, and enough money was earned for a good start in next years project. We also sponsored other projects, such as furnishing cokes to all visiting football and basketball teams. Besides earning money through paper drives and coat checking, the club had many memorable experiences. Several good pro- grams were offered at meetings, a college football game was seen, and the year was finished with a beach party. Our club started the year with 20 mem- bers, but by the end, had accepted 55 more, making it the biggest, and certainly one of the best. organizations in the school. One of the recent tournaments was the American Junior Bowling District Championship. Another tournament we were able to participate in was the Christ- mas Bowling Tournament. We have been very lucky to have such a swell bunch of girls and a wonderful sponsor. Because of their co- operation and loyalty, we can give award and trophies to the Best Bowler of the Year, to the Best Team of the Year and to the Last Place Team. ORCHESTRA Dear St1f1fe11!.r.' The Orchestra students have played several places this year. We entertained the Kiwanis Club, played in a high school Christmas concert and assembly, and played for the junior play. Probably our two biggest thrills were, going to the District Festival March 16, and getting a 1 rating, and playing in a combined concert with the West Shore Symphony. Then as the year came to a close we traveled to Chicago. We visited several places and saw Cinerama. Next year, under the direction of Mr. Rau we hope to have a bigger and better orchestra. FUTURE TEACHERS' CLUB Tori' 'er in 1 I4 tis grew, 'iii' Dear Sllll1i6'7'lf,f,' This year the Future Teachers' Club has continued its program of encouraging and helping students who wish to enter the teaching profession. Our major activity has been our observation or cadet teaching pro- gram. In this program, club members spend a few hours each week visiting classes and assisting the teachers. This helps us to de- cide what age group we prefer working with, and also to decide whether or not teaching really is the career we wish to followi The programs at our meetings also help us to learn more about the profession. Some of our other activities this year have included sponsoring an after-game dance and a booth in the carnival, attend- ing the district and regional F.T.A. con- ferences, and visiting the Haven School. Our officers for this year were Doris Bilz, presidentg Ron Elenbaas, vice-presidentg Norma Zimmerman, secretaryg Nanci Katt, treasurerg and Nan Wcmcndworth, historian. RETAIL-OFFICE CLUB Dear Stzmfenlr: The Retail-Office Club combines work with pleasure. All of us work on the school's co-operative training program. The club, under the presidency of Beverly De Heer, has conducted some money-making activities for the club fund. A stationery sale, baked goods sale, and cake-walk boosted the treasury. But all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. The Retail-Office Club has had lots of fun. For one thing, we sponsored a Polka party with music by Carl Rosin's Band. A Pizza party and a Banquet were the other sources of fun. This has been a very well organized year for the Retail-Office Club, and one of which we are proud. FOOTBALL Bucs turned the tide by scoring twice in the first quarter and turned back the Vikes 31-20. Following the Niles game, the Bucs shattered an 18-game win- ning streak by defeating the Pioneers of East Grand Rapids 20-7 in the best team effort of the year. In the last game with Grand Rapids Creston, the Bucs The 1956 Buccaneer football machine was noted for its relentless grinding, ground attack that crunched out 106 first downs to its opponents' 81. Due to a mid-season slump, the Bucs finished with a respectable but not exceptional 5-2-2 record. The story of the 1956 football team at Grand Haven, however, does not end with the win-loss record. This team had the courage to win several games after set-backs that would have crushed many po- tentially great teams. After losing the first game to Muskegon Catholic 6-7 in a contest which the Bucs completely dominated, they roared back with a de- cisive 12-6 decision over Benton Harbor, and a 19-6 romp over St. Joe. After tying Holland 7-7 and Ionia 0-0, the Bucs received a complete trouncing from Muskegon Heights 26-0. Then the Bucs took on Niles. High hopes for a sorely needed win were present, but prospects looked dim as Niles raced back 90 yards with the opening kick-off to score. The had to make up a 14-point deficit to win 20-14, the last TD coming for the Bucs with 1:44 left in the contest. The Bucs were cheered on by the largest and most loyal following in the history of Grand Haven athletics. This was a truly great team in the great football tradition of Grand Haven. The '57 team, which will include 21 returning lettermen and a supply of new talent from the year's successful Little Buc team, is expected to produce an- other fine football season for Grand Haven. They run their laps around the football field instead of a regulation cinder track. Despite this disadvantage, the tracksters have turned in several respectable times in their meets. The team is composed mostly of underclassmen which means the team should be a threat in years to come.
