This yearbook is the closing chapter of four years of high school life-four years that truly were the best of our lives! When we look back many years from now, the good old school days at G. H. H. S. will stand out vividly in our memories. The friends we made are a part oflthat memory, as are the good times-dances, parties, hay rides, football and basketball games-and the big events like the plays and the prom. Every one of the Seniors will leave with his or her individual memories. We hope this yearbook will serve as a reminder to the Seniors of the best year of their lives-their last year. And we hope it will help the underclassmen remember one of the best years of their lives. 3 DEDICATICDN For twenty-nine years the Grand Haven Public School system has grown under the leadership of Mr. Earl H. Babcock, who is retiring this year. This growth, very obvious in the size of buildings, number of teachers and of pupils, is just as great in the adequacy and quality of education offered to all of the people of Grand Haven. In addition to his work here, Mr. Babcock has been prominent in the work of the Michigan Education Association of which he was president. I-Ie has also served on many state educational committees, especially those interested in making school law. Mr. Babcock was the first superintendent to be awarded an honorary life membership in the Industrial Education Society of Michigan for his contribution in the Held of industrial education. With a sincere appreciation of the fact that we have had better opportunities for education because he was superintendent, we, the Class of '52, wish to dedicate this Blue and Gold to Mr. Earl H. Babcock. We wish him the best of luck and happiness in the future. 5 IN APPIQECIATICDIXI to Mzss Cora Edge, who is retiring after 32 years as an art instructor, 18 of them spent at Grand Haven. Her talent, vast experience, and back- ground have made her an inspiring and helpful teacher in the field of art. Friendly and ever ready to be of assistance, she devoted her life to bringing art to the students and the community. Miss Edge's enthusiasm was a definite asset, for her pupils seem to have caught some of her enthusiastic nature in their interest in art. Wie wish Miss Edge the greatest of happiness in the future. 6 to Miss Gwen Gwinn, speech and dramatics teacher, who is leaving after three years at G. H. H. S. She worked untiringly to make the junior and senior plays a successg to build the Thespian and National Thespian societies into strong organizationsg and to further the interest in dramatics. Her friendliness and personality have made the students think of her as one of them ...... The best of luck! to Mrs. Harold Lnoma, to Miss who is leaving after five years at G. H. H. S. as girls' physical education instructor. She worked with the cheerleaders to perfect the school yells and ably and enthusiastically sponsored a strong G. A. A. Her cheerful smile will be missed by us ...... The best of luck! Arlene Kerton, who is leaving after live years at G. H. H. S. as English and Spanish teacher. Her help with the jr.-Sr. Proms was invaluable, and her helpful, cherry manner will be sorely missed ...... The best of luck! A 7 004 wx w Q-Q vw 131' W. I 1 ia Glenn H. For the first few weeks we wandered around in a state of confusion customary to all ninth graders. As the year got under way, and we became more accustomed to high school life, we selected Dick Poel as our president, Chuck Arnold, vice-president, Nancy Mistretta, secretary, and Ernamae Wills, treasurer. In our sophomore year we felt much older and wiser. We chose Quay Pope as president, Don Shears, vice-presidentg Bob Clink, secretaryg and Bill Brems, treasurer. We struggled through Silas Mamet and put on the annual Christmas Dance. Soon our sophomore year was over and we joined of Matt Pellegrom 1952 the selection of our class rings, the junior play, A Little Honey, and our jr.-Sr. prom, Sweethearts on Parade. That year we chose as our class officers, Don Shears, president, joan Mierle, vice-president, john Koppel, secretary, and Harriet Ellingson, treasurer. Yes, we really felt busy and important in our junior year. Then all too soon we were seniors. This year Pete Manting, jay Casemier, Dorothy Kozicki, and Matt Pellegrom were chosen as our Senior Class officers. We began work on our yearbook and our senior play, Clementine, and slowly but surely we moved toward graduation day. Now with mixed joy and sorrow we are ending our high school days - The Best Years of Our Lives. the ranks of upper rlarrmevlr. Their first class meeting was called to elect officers. Charles Angus was their choice for president, Jack Van Schelven for vice-president, Shirley Griffin for secretary, and Bob Swart for treasurer. They decided to start building up their treasury and so sponsored a very successful skating party. In the homecoming parade freshmen floats were out- standing, and in other ways this group showed that they were a class to be watched. During their sophomore year their officers were Lou Secory, presidentg Dick Peel, vice-presidentg Jeanine jolman, secretaryg and Bob Swart, treasurer. This year the class activity was most noticeable in connection with the junior Historical Society. Finally in the fall of '51 these upper classmenn began one of the busiest years of their lives. Will they ever forget the fun they had producing I Remember Mama, getting their class rings, and putting on the junior-senior prom, Moonlight and Roses ? Their oflficers this year were president, Marilyn Swartz, vice-president, Marty johnson, secretary, Loretta Williamsg and treasurer, Dick Peel. After a few weeks, they elected their class olficers. joe Fricano was chosen for presidentg Don Zysk, vice-president, Paul Eggert, secretary, and Pete Fisher, treasurer. The rest of the year was spent getting acquainted with each other and getting used to the work and activities of high school. By the fall of '51 they had begun to get the drift of high school life. For this year they elected Don Zysk, presidentg Ed Suchecki, vice-president, Ernie Rouwhorst, secretaryg and Rudy Reber, treasurer. Although, as a class their main projects were sponsoring two dances, we can find the names of sophomores on the active list of almost every club and team in school. They, as we, found this a very confusing year in their lives. Trying to get accustomed to high school life and getting acquainted with their two hundred classmates took them almost all of the year. For president of their class they chose Len Andersong for vice-president, Lamar Bargerg for secretary, Jim Crandleg and for treasurer, jim Smith. As a group, they sponsored the Saggy Sock Shuffle. They may not realize it yet, but the freshman class is well on their way into The Best Years of Their Lives. 55 YQ xr I . ? ..,..,, .s .Q gf Q ai' 4 Q K A 'Q i .Mi F is 5 ef ga Q1 A E is .. Soon after that, election of repre- sentatives from each advisory was held, and the Council began its regular meetings. Many routine matters were taken care of as well as some major projects, such as the Community Chest drive, the Christmas Dance, and the Carnival. The proceeds from the Carnival are to be put into a fund to be used to furnish the recreation room in the new high school. A new project undertaken this year was the cleaning up of the trophies and the trophy cases. A june party is being planned as a climax to the year's work. The Bucs' Blonde J A very enthusiastic staff started work on THE BVCQS' BLADE in September. After a successful subscription drive the bi-weekly issues began to appear. In October, the editor, the sponsor, and some members of the staff attended a journalism meeting at Michigan State College. The staff showed true journalism spirit when they produced the homecoming issue on time even though it meant almost a nights work at the typewriter and mimeograph machine. Since then. the appearance and size of the paper have somewhat changed because it is now being printed in Wliitelizill. THE BUGS' BLADE has been doing a fine job of reporting the happenings at G. H. Each member was also scheduled for regular use of the link trainer. Continuation of this club will give many students useful knowledge of aviation as well as some good fun. Football '51 In 1951 with a 5-5 record, we had our best season since 1948. Playing in Michigan's tough- est conference, the Bucs did well to Finish where they did. The team steamrollered over the non- conference foes, Alma, Ludington and Ionia, show- ing the power they packed when playing teams in their own class. Two players were selected for the All-Southwestern conference team, Chuck Arnold and Nick Essenyi. The biggest high- light of the season was the thrill-packed 6-0 win over the Kalamazoo Maroon Giants with 45 seconds remaining in the game.
