Although they are gone from our circle of friends, these two still hold a place in our thoughts when we remember. .70I'e6U0l' The theme of our 1950 BLUE AND GOLD is I Remember . . . As you look through this book, both now and in later years, we hope that it brings back to you all the things this year of school life has meant. Do you remember those three precious minutes between the Hrst and last bell, how the line piles up outside Miss Young's office on a slippery day, how slow the line in front of the Book Store moves the first day of school, how long the football game is when the team is losing, and how funny it seemed on Skip Day without the seniors? We and our yearbook are saying, I Remember the year 1950 at Grand Haven High School. Duble of Con ten td ADMINISTRATION . ....... Page 8 CLASSES . . Page 16 ACTIVITIES Page 58 SPORTS . . X ' J',R. J70, X 5.0 7 J ,iw It was a beautiful night, June 20, 1970. Crowds of people were trying to get tickets for the show at the mammoth new Grand Theatre. Although our Hat.Shop wasn't doing too well, Barb Ruiter and I, Monica Mierle, had managed to save fifty cents for the tickets. We hoped that the money would be well spent. We slipped through the crowd and having found our seats, talked to Rich Fase. the head usher, who introduced us to the rest of the ushers. They were Arnold Nadort, Bob Conant, Chuck Barthel, Chuck Frame, and Bob Farmer. Roger Buikema owns the Grand Theatre now. When Don Vander Kolk, Sheriff of the local Bastille, State Policeman Rog Vander Wagen, and Detective Mike Cuti walked in, quite a hub-bub arose. Very recently the trio had captured Pete Harrison, who was sentenced to ten years in Sing Sing for committing the unforgivable crime of go- ing through a red light. His number is lll7356. Gene Polack the brains of the gang, got only two months in the local Bastille for planning the stop light episode. The ads on the curtain told us many things about our old friends. All the advertisements had been drawn by Molly Lock, the temperamental artist from Greenwich Village, Joyce Brosseitg Dort Sterzerg and Marcia De Ryke. Some of the advertisements were: Read the MORNING TRIBUNE edited by Bill Pollock. Don't miss Diane Tomlinson's advice to the love-lorn column. Tune in on station WGHHS every Friday night and watch world-famous Frank Maggiore box on television. Marv Schrebe, Manager. Buy flowers for all occasions at the DELUXE FLOWER SHOP, Ray Berg, Proprietor. Come to the arena every Tuesday night and see Leroy Van Vleet, Gill Van Weelden, and Albert Reaume perform daredevil feats on their motor- cycles. Turn in all your old cars to Warren Beekman's junkyard. Don't go anywhere, let us handle your business. Ann Koppel, Betty Davison, and Alice Reeths, Under- takers. The house lights dimmed as the orchestra began playing. We recognized many old friends in the orchestra: Pat Ver Berkemoes, Bonnie Teunis, Larry Reaume, Fred Herbst, jalaine Riemersma, Jackie Dirkse, Yvonne Dirkse, and Elaine Schrieber. The conductor looked very familiar, but what boy from our class would be seen with such long hair! Ah, we have it! Ford Broman! The curtain went up as the music faded out. Steve Sabo, the master of ceremonies, came out to an- nounce the acts. v ,Ve 1 E.-9' B 'P' lg Ll -Nm 1 6-5 5-9412 The first to be presented was a piano recital played by the world-famous concert pianist, Mary Ellqn Walda. The next few acts were much less serious than the preceding. Marjorie Payne put her trained lions through their tricks. Bob johnson demonstrated trick shooting, and contortionists Jim Teasley, Dewey Phillips, and john Olsen, performed many strenu- ous' feats, and drew the attention of every male and female in the audience by flexing their huge biceps. The next act was a skit presented by a troupe of professoinal actors. The title of the play was Murder in the Haunted House. The actors we recognized were Don Borck, the villain, Beulah Schoolcraft, the victimg Marilyn Dailey, the heroine, Gene Gardner, the counterfeiterg Gertrude Wiebenga, the counter- feiter's accomplice, George Nykamp. the investigator, and Bob Sloothaack, the jailer. During the intermission we again talked with Rich Fase. He told us that Doris Holmes was the scenery painter, and that Helen Brefka and janet Briegel were directors of this I-roduction. He also told us that during the contortionist act Jane Bewalda had fainted. When a doctor and nurse were called for, who do you think responded? Why, who else but Doctor Bob Bishop and Nurse Brigitta Cuti. Wilma Anderson, Lucy Tripp, Jessie Cleveringa, Dona Carskadon, and Pat Stolberg, the leading make- up artists in the country had been hired just for this show. june Peabody was the hair stylist. When we talked with Karen Byl during the in- termission, she invited us to her home after the show to meet some more of our old friends. The second Part of the show was devoted to home-town talent, folks who hadn't gone out of Grand Haven to make their fortune in show business. Emmajean Boelens, the dog trainer, brought her dogs to perform many tricks which delighted both young and old. Her red setter had just placed first in a dog show in New York. The Trilling Trio, Barb Szymas, Alice Resner, and Mary Peck, sang a few songs and were called back for encores. Norma Tysman thrilled the audience with her magic, and Barb Van Hall, Betty Mack, and Isabelle Holmes demonstrated roller skating, the beginner and the professional. The curtain went down after that act and every- one, having enjoyed a wonderful variety show, left the Grand Theatre. Barb and I met several friends on the way to Karen's party. They were Shirley Carrier, Alice Chit- tenden, and Catherine Mihalek, all secretaries with one of the large manufacturing firms in Grand 2. 8 I. ' IJ. Arriving at Karen's, I rang the bell and was very Cheri Gosen and Helen Wilkinson suddenly rushed Q much surprised to have a butler answer. He looked very familiar, and we finally recognized him as Rich Ebel. His English accent surely fooled us! He ushered us into the drawing room where Karen, a leading socialite in Grand Haven, greeted us. We gossiped awhile until I caught sight of my old friend, Betty Parker. She is Superintendent of Nurses at the Grand Haven Memorial Hospital. Gerald Liesen is the head surgeon at the same hospital. Next we spoke to Nancy Vander Wagen and Barb Bonema who have opened a coffee shop and are doing a prosperous business. As I continued to look around the room, I noticed that Powers' models, June Schuiteman, Nancy Vaughn, and Pat Weaver were having a gay time telling everyone all about New York. Ruth Kozicki, Inez Swartz, Nancy Lehman, and Pat Snell, night club dancers, were trying to teach Cal Rosema, the most eligible bachelor of the year, a new dance step. On the far side of the room Joann Wagenmaker was playing the piano and Marcia Clark and Phyllis Poel were singing. The three girls are top execu- tives in some large firm in Coopersville. Jeanne Rezney, Donna Terrill, and Sandra Sherk all arrived for a wonderful time with their old friends. Jeanne manufactures cigarettes here in Grand Haven, and Donna and Sandra reside in Holland. Bette Donselar was there with her husband who is the minister of a church in Grand Rapids. The President of the United States, Neal Ralya and the Vice President, Betty Slayter were announced and received a warm welcome from everyone. Then a very distinguished looking gentleman walked into the room. He was recognized instantly as, The Hon- orable Blair Worthington Kennedy, one of our friends who, it was discovered is of royal ancestry. We noticed three of our local high school teach- ers: Gene Yedinak teaches engineering at the new Grand Haven High School, Bev Michael, who teaches Latin: and Sharon Grevel, who teaches speech. Pat Campbell has taken Eleanor Roosevelt's place in the United Nations. I saw her discussing the farm policy with Senator John Bakale. We heard someone say that Shirley Mason was unavoidably detained because she was immersed in her enthralling work of evolving a dictionary of simple words for mundane use. La Verne Van Beek, the world's champion bowler, was busy telling everyone his latest record-breaking score. Sandra showed us her teen-age daughter's collec- tion of stars pictures. She had autographed ones of Penny Frovog and George Bolles of the movies and Edith Rosema, comedienne, and Jack Murphy of television. in. They are teaching cheer leading at M. S. C. Jark Ver Murlen and Willie Walker were there arguing whether or not Michigan should be a dry state. Jack is a Prohibitionist. Glenn Marshall, the multi-millionaire, was talk- ing to Bill Wipperfurth, the head of the United Mine Workers, about the present coal strike. Bill seemed unconcerned. Other well-known members of our class who were there were: Ray Swanson who is a photographer for the M. G. M. Studio in Hollywoodg Nancy Horton who is 1 sfewardess for the Pan-American airlines, Jackie DeWitt who is a well-to-do secretary. 4She has a twenty-four room home in California.J Peggy Holzinger who is a successful housewife, and Bill Gardner who teaches civics in Grand Haven High School. Everyone was quite excited when Mike Calogerakis and Ed Anderson who play professional football entered. As I wandered from room to room, I found Joyce Ver Plank trying to persuade everyone that we need a new fire engine. She is on the committee for fire prevention this yearg and Shirley Wildrom, the artist, sitting in a corner sketching Ted Johnson. the Olympics swimming champion. Bob Van Schelven and Kenny Clark who play professional basketball for Podunk Center were talk- ing sports with Mike and Ed most of the evening. Henry King who is the mayor of the neighboring metropolis of Ferrysburg, and Doug Bethke, who has just won the title, The World's Most Popular Singer , came late, but we were glad to see them. Rosemary De Bruin, a member of the W. C. T. U., joined Jack Ver Murlen and Willie Walker. She seemed greatly interested in their argument for and against prohibition. June Lindsey was in the next room showing Kenny Roberts, the novelist, a few tricks in judo. Bill Clink and Florie, national champion midget racers, kept one group listening to exciting tales about their unusual occupation. Ron Poplaski who is coaching football at Notre Dame and Bob Buikema football coach at the Uni- versity of Michigan are good friends - in June. Over in one corner I saw Joyce Poort vigorously describing the Calvinsitic theory to Earl Epplett who seemed more interested in playing Chopsticks on the piano. The well-known Gene Ott and his flashing smile have been posing for Pepsodent advertisements. He was unable to be there that night because of a previ- ous engagement. The Aides have 240 class hours in which they learn about home and family living and simplified nursing. They also spend 300 hours working at the local hospital. Even though the class was small this year, much was accomplished. The Aides won first prize for their float in the Homecoming parade. Their social activities included a Halloween party, a Christmas dinner, a Valentine party, and a beach roast. I., Give ta mighty heave. Portia facet lifef' S4 91 s F? X My X . .X . The team appeared to have plenty of spirit and fight at the beginning of each game, but due to lack of ex- perience and more than our share of injuries, they lost much of the spark needed for victory. The crowning achievement for the '49 eleven was a 6-6 tie with a strong Benton Harbor team. Although we won only one game and tied one, the experience will prove valuable to the number of fine men developed this year who will form strong teams in the future. As for those who graduate, they will be remembered for their fine play and the fact that they never let down even when the going was the roughest. 95 BOB bad VAN SCHELVEN, Despite a back, Bob was our scatback and was also a fine pass receiver. Finding someone to match Bob's punts will be a difficult iob long nexi year. EDWARD KLUKOS, The regular left half back, Ed did most of the pass- ing and surprised the opponents with his quick kicks. His strong run- ning in the Midland game will make him an important threat in next year's backfield. GEORGE BOLLES, George made good in his only year out for foot- ball. A fine blocker and tackler, he RON POPLASKI, our line-plunging captain, was the only Buc to make the All-Conference team. Ron was the sparkplug of both the offensive and the defensive backfield and will be sorely missed next year. JIM SWART, a hard working full- back, .lim kicked the extra points this year. He played a number of games as the line-backer and should be an asset for next year's team. Ludington 1 9- 1 2 Grand Haven opened the football season with a 19-12 victory over a determined Ludington eleven that was seeking revenge for 9 consecutive defeats at the hands of the Buccaneers. The local boys made up for their weak defense by crossing the Oriole goal line three times with Frank Maggiore toting the ball twice and Bob Van Schelven on the other occasion. Benton Harbor 6-6 After outplaying Benton Harbor for most of the game, the Buccaneers had to settle for a 6-6 tie with the larger school. Maggiore passed to Buikema for Grand Haven's lone score in the last quarter after the Tigers had scored earlier in the same period. Maggiore and Van Schelven were outstanding for Grand Haven. Muskegon 0 -2 O Taking advantage of Russell Kelly's poor kick-off, Grand Haven took the ball down to Muskegon's three yard line after a series of first downs. The Bucs lost the ball on downs after being penalized, and that ended Grand Haven's scoring threat for the en- tire game. The Big Reds repeatedly cut through the Havenite's weak defense and piled up large gains on end runs. The Bucs put up a gallant fight but ended up on the short end of a 20-0 decision. Bob Van Schelven was Grand Havens lone offensive threat, and he was the boy that kept us in the ball game. Line play was dominated by jerry Liesen who played a fine game at guard. also could be counted on to gain yardage when it was needed. NEAL RALYA, Our signal-calling quarterback, Pete was a vicious blocker and tackler. He had plenty af spirit and put his heart into every game. ROBERT URBANIK, Bob was iniured at the beginning of the season and didn't see action until the last few games. However, he showed up so well, both offensively and defen- sively, that he is the leading candi- date for next year's center iob. 96 DON HARVEY, Don played tackle on defense and filled in at offensive center when needed. A big boy, he gained valuable experience this year, and should prove a big help to next year's Bucs. l KENNY ROBERTS, A senior, Ki was our varsity center most of t year. His fine blocking and cent: ing will be a hard thing to repla: EDWARD ANDERSON, Another sen- ior, Ed came to us as a transfer student from Wisconsin. Although he was plagued by ankle troubles, Ed filled in at center and did a fine iob of backing up the line in a number of games. ALYN BALDUS, The biggest man on the team, Baldy showed up well at defensive tackle. He'll be back again next year and should be heard from a great deal. 'Kalamazoo Central 0-19 The Buccaneers were able to stop Kalamazoo but not shifty Lloyd johnson who made more than two-thirds of Centtal's yardage on three long runs. The Bucs themselves were only able to gain 44 yards rushing. Jerry Liesen and Wdb Walker were the stand- outs for Grand Haven. Ionia 0-1 3 A peppy Ionia eleven invaded Grand Haven and produced a 13-O upset over a dis- organized group of Buccaneers who lacked everything, including spirit. The Havenites, who played their poorest game of the season were completely overwhelmed by clever fullback Bill Fate and his mates. The defeat marked the first time a Grand Haven team has lost to a class B school in several years. Muskegon Heights 0- 1 8 After being beaten by a scrappy Ionia, the Buccaneers turned to a mediocre Muskegon Heights team. Although beaten in four other gridiron contests, the Tigers, coached by crafty Okie johnson, came out of the fray with an 18-0 victory. The injury-ridden Bucs bumped into a rockribbed Heights line and were forced to gain ground the hard way, while the heretofore weak offense of the Tigers steadily chewed up yardage through the Grand Haven line. Halfback Maggiore smeared many Heights runners while Wilb Walker gave a creditable performance on the line. Bob Van Schelven booted a beauti- ful 50 yard punt, but the Heights came back 80 yards to score. AL MOLENKAMP, Al mowed down the opposition for his third straight year. He made the All-State team in his junior year, and the only thing that stopped him from repeat- ing was the fact that he was kept out of most of the games because of iniuries. GERALD LIESEN, A senior, Jerry played every minute of every game. He plugged up the holes on de- fense and opened them up on of- fense. Jerry made All-State honor- able mention in his first year on the Varsity. RICHARD FASE, Surprisingly fast for his weight, Rich discouraged many a player by his hard block- ing and tackling. A good candidate for All-Conference, he was forced to quit the squad in the middle of the season because of a bad should- er injury. 97 QUAY POPE, A sophomore who made the first team in his first year out for football, Quay was good enough to play defensive tackle. He also helped out at quarterback and, given more experience, should develop into o real player. i i FRED BORCHERS, A iunior, Sonny played both offensive and defensive tackle well. He is another of the players that shows that Grand Hav- en will have no shortage of talented tackles next yeor. GLENN MARSHALL, A senior, Glenn played some fine games os line backer on defense. His speed and good tackling will be missed next year. MARVIN BUCKNER, A sophomore, Marv filled Fase's position and did a darned good iob at it, too. A rugged player, both offensively and defensively, he should give our op- ponents a lot of trouble in the next two years. GLENN JOHNSON, A big boy, DON BREMS, A big powerful end, Don made some fine catches includ- ing o couple in the Holland game which are well-remembered. How- ever, he showed well on defense and will be back again next year. ROBERT BUIKEMA, After being on the varsity for three years, Bob was converted from tackle to end when he was needed. Bob was bothered by iniuries all season and only saw limited action. Glenn has plenty of ability and spirit, and should help our team con- siderably next year. ROBERT SNOEK, The most improved end on the squad, Bob did a good iob of filling in Molenkamp's shoes. A good blocker, he'll be back again next year and should be heard from. ROBERT BISHOP, A good pass-snar- ing end, Bob made the first team in his first and only year out for high school football. Lansing Eastern 0-27 Grand Haven traveled to the state capital for a grid battle with a class A Lansing Eastern, and for the fifth straight game they failed to score. The team was short handed with injuries, and only a handful of regulars were able to start. Wilb Walker was Grand Haven's lone bright spot. Midland 1 3 -3 8 The blue and gold clad warriors absorbed a 38-15 defeat at the hands of a powerful Midland aggregation. The Bucs took a momentary lead in the first quarter, but their attack fizzled out after that. The Bucs were unable to stop the potent Midland aerial attack that featured Paul Thorsberg. The Chemic back completed 6 out of 10 passes for 180 yards. Ed Klukos did the heaving for the Havenites with fair success. Once more Bob Van Schelven was the leading ground-gainer for Grand Haven. jerry Liesen, Wilb Walker, and Quay Pope stood out on the line. Holland 13 -2 5 Grand Haven ended the 1949 season with a 25-15 loss to Holland, by which the Dutchmen regained possession of the Wooden Shoes. The Bucs fought all the way, but the superior Dutch team was too much for our injury-stricken team. Former Little Buc player Bob Tasma scored three touchdowns for the winners. Bright spot for Grand Haven was the passing of Ed Klukos, who fired five completions in ten attempts. Ron Poplaski was good on the defense in backfield while Fred Borchers, Wilb Walker, and Quay Pope excelled on the line. WILBUR WALKER, A really rugged tackle, Wilb wasn't taken out of a game all year. This was his third year on the first team and finding someone to fill in his shoes will be an important iob next year. FORD BROMAN, Another senior tackle, Ford showed that he had plenty of fight when the going was rough. Given more time he prob- ably would have developed into an outstanding player. 98 DON SHEARS, A guard at the be- ginning of the season, Don was placed at tackle when Gardner was iniured. Because of his fine play there, and because he's only a sophomore, he has all the possibil- ties of becoming a fine tackle. MIKE CALOGERAKIS, A speedy hal back, Mike put in his second yec on the Blue and Gold varsitj Great things were expected fron him, but he too, was kept out mo of the year due to iniuries. WILLIAM GARDNER, When Bill wr iniured early in the season, th Bucs lost one of their best player Fast and rugged, his loss was fe by the whole team. CLARENCE LAMAN, A flashy em Clancy was the boy who made ol. end-around play work. He is oi other one of the fine ends that th coach will have at his disposal no: year. I ff? Each game was played better than the one before, as the scores indicate, and they came back to trounce Holland 28-0 after losing 27-6 in an earlier game. In conference play the team finished in fourth place with one win, one tie, and 5 losses. Grand Haven opened the 1949-50 basketball season with a 40-55 conquest over Holland Chris- tian. The Bucs led all the way in the closely con- tested game. High scorer for Grand Haven was Frank Maggiore with l-'i points followed closely by Clancy l.aman who had l2. The Bucs lost to a powerful Grand Rapids Christian team in a thriller. The locals fought all the way, but they could not overcome Christian's height advantage. Lanky, 6' 4 Micky Newhof dumped in the tying basket with less than a min- ute left to playp fifteen seconds later he fired in the winning score just as the gun went off. Laman and Maggoire again paced Grand Haven with l0 and 9 points respectively. Grand Haven defeated the Muskegon Big Reds 55-52 in their first conference tilt. The speedy Blue and Gold team warded off a last minute rally by the Big Reds to take their second victory. Clancy Laman led the Bucs in scoring with 12 points folowed by Bob Van Schelven with ll markers. DON KIEFT - our center and an excellent rebound mon. Don will be another graduation loss. BILL POLLOCK - a senior who helped the Blue and Gold cause in his first year in our school. The Blue and Gold knocked off Grand Rapids Catholic Central 39-54 for their third win. The Bucs led all the way and were only pressed once in the third quarter. Van Schelven and Don Kieft were the big guns in the Havenite attack. A twelve point barrage by Kalamazoo Central in the last quarter sank the Buccaneers at the big Western State Gym. After trailing by only two points, the roof fell in on the Bucs. Bob Van Schelven paced Grand Haven with 9 points, and Al Molenkamp had 8. The Furniture City Holiday Tournament As defending tournament champs, Grand Haven completely outclassed favored Grand Rapids South 58-50. Grand Haven led by 20 points during most of the contest, and only in the last quarter did they slacken up. The Bucs were amazingly accurate, hitting the hoop almost every time they fired. Grand Haven wound up in third place in the tournament by virtue of a 38-34 win over Grand Rapids Union. The game was close, and the Bucs had to come from behind to win. Grand Haven rang up an unimpressive 55-53 win over class C Whitehall. After a lagging attack in the first half, the Bucs came to life and poured it on in the last two periods. The Bucs were never threatened, and Coach Sluka sent the subs in for most of the last half, and they continued to out- score the Tigers. Bob Van Schelven led Grand Haven with l0 markers and Al Molankamp dumped in 8. The omnipotent Havenites continued their win- ning ways by defeating Holland 52-47 in a thrill- packed game. The Bucs displayed speed and fi- nesse in beating Holland for the first time in 9 years. Much credit for the victory should be given to Don Kieft and Al Molenkamp who played an outstanding game and who effectively controlled the backboards against the taller Dutchmen. The Bucs traveled to Benton Harbor and were handed a 51-34 licking by the Tigers. Maggiore made ten points in a losing cause while Molen- kamp contributed eight. Gimme, Gimme! Yer, fir, Kieft if doing bit jobfn reserve, Frank is a junior who will CRAIG KAMMERAAD - a tall lun- ior, Craig's height proved to be advantageous against our oppon- ents. Grand Haven suffered another defeat on a for- eign court. The Muskegon Big Reds grabbed the lead after the first quarter and never relinquished it. Bob Van Schelven topped the Grand Haven scoring with 12 points, and Molenkamp and Kieft had 9 and 8 points respectively. Weak Muskegon Heights trounced the Bucs 46-35 as the Havenites continued to skid. Grand Haven was without the services of several of its players, and that helped spell defeat. Van Schel- ven and Kamhout each had 13 points. Inability to hit the basket was the chief factor in the downfall of the Bucs as they succumbed to state champion Kalamazoo Central 47-33. Mag- giore played a fine game, and led the Buc scoring with 10 points. Clancy Laman and Carl Kam- hout each had 6. Holland High easily defeated Grand Haven 56-41. The Bucs played a good game, but the ball just wouldnt go through the hoop. Bob Van Schelven took scoring honors for the Havenites with 11 points. Little Bobby Klukos turned in BOB BELL - a sophomore who will be counted on next year. . Y . The Bucs snapped out of their scoring lethargy to whip Benton Harbor 54-47. The Havenites led the Tigers all the way in gaining revenge over the team that sent us skidding. Bob VanSche1ven dumped in 16 points for the local cause. Carl Kamhout, played an outstanding game under the backboards, and Clancy Laman scorde 14 points. The District Tournament Grand Haven squeezed past Grandville 41-37 in a poorly played game. The Bulldogs showed surprising strength and came close to upsetting us. Again Godwin Heights spoiled our hopes of going places in the tourney. The Bucs played bet- ter ball than in the previous game and gave God- win one of their closest scrapes this season, but 6' 8 Art Spoelstra was too hard to handle. Don Kieft paced Grand Haven with 7 points. PAT KAMHOUT - a transfer stud- ent who joined our team in the lat- ter part of the campaign, Pat nailed down a regular position and bol- stered our squad. More than 80 boys answered Coach jim Hicks' call when the season started. Eight teams were immediately organized and the games started soon afterward. Half of the games were played in the High School and the other half in the Armory. Two rounds were played with every team playing each other once during each round. The winners of the rounds, the Reds and the Giants played each other at the end of the season with the Giants winning a close one 31-29.
