So for our theme this year we have chosen the Forty- uizztfr and have tried to blend our school activities with the exciting and colorful experiences of those adventurers. Wfe have come to realize that camping at Grand Haven High School has heen a pleasant, profitahle. and many times exciting experience. IN '49 . . the Senior Class wishes to dedicate its year- book to Mr. james Edward Graybiel who has so well coached our teams during these past years. He came to Grand Haven in I939 and was called to the armed services in IQIIS. In IQJI7 he returned to our high school and has been our history teacher and our football, track, and basketball coach. We sincerely wish him success in his new position at Traverse City. THE ANNUAL BOARD This year the Annual Board was organized in September. Work was starred immediately with the hope that all school events could be included in The Forty Niner . In October the sponsor, the section chairmen, and the editor attended a meeting at Michigan State College. All phases of yearbook publication were discussed, and the members gained many new ideas and received much help. The Forty Niner is the first Blue and Gold to have a padded cover. Wfith the aid of a very strong Band Parents' organization, the band was able to sponsor skating parties, entertain the Hobart Indiana Band, follow the football team to 6 games, give the 5 annual concerts, and, most important of all, to compete in the district and state band festivals. On March 26, the band received the highest honors possible in the district, and they are highly favored for a similar outcome in the state. Fourteen new members were admitted and were informally initiated in the gym. Later the same evening they were formally initiated. Among the activities of the club were these: the juniors sold Frostbites at the senior playg the club members attended a one-act play festival presented by the Masque Society of Muskegon High Schoolg and the club sponsored a St. Patrick Day dance. FOOTBALL '48 With an array of eleven lettermen, the Grand Haven Buccaneers finished the '48 season with the finest record achieved here in fifteen years. We placed five players on the All-Conference team, and Russ Rescorla and Al Molenkamp took halfback and tackle positions on the All-State second team. We won six games, lost two by only one touchdown, and tied one. We scored 174 points against 71 for our opponents. ., - - Al Molenkamp-Our hardworking ii ' ' l left tackle who was a constant threat 5 ' on defensive as well as a stalwart blocker on offensive. He made the All-State team in his junior year and will bear the brunt of the line play next year. Ruff Rescorla- A three-year man, it Russ was the spark plug of the Buc's backfield. He scored 120 points out of the 1eam's 170 for the season. He was a triple threat man and did all the place kicking. Russ was one of our two All-State men this year. 85 g 'X l Dick Hallock-A three-year man who started in the backlield. When the coach needed ends, Ditch was called on and was molded into one of our finest pass receivers. r- f J'-Klxlf x- l ' ,Z L14 dzngton 3 2 - 8 Grand Haven began its season in fine style by de- feating Ludington 32 to 8. Although held on fairly even terms in the first quarter, after a long drive, Cuti took the ball over on the hrst play of the second period. Rescorla then ripped off yardage for three touchdowns, and after Maggiore's brilliant 55-yard sprint, Cuti scored for the last Buccaneer tally. Coach Graybiel then gave his subs a chance and Ludington scored a touchdown and a safety. Benton Harbor 14-7 Grand I-Iaven opened its home schedule by humbling the Benton Harbor Tigers for the first time in six years, 14 to 7. Rescorla and Cuti again lead the backfield that rolled up 202 yards against the 1 1 Don johmcm - A veteran end who mauled the opposition for his third year. Don made All-Conference this year. The coach will have trouble finding his equal. . I Norm Groth-A big boy who was overshadowed only by the two regu- lar ends. He made one of the best catches of the season in the Creston game. Tigers, but it was the fine play of the entire line that was outstanding, for the opponent was held to a total of one yard gained for the whole conflict. Except for the intercepted pass that scored, Benton Harbor never was a serious threat, and the Tigers played de- fensively throughout the game. Muskegon 1 3 -1 3 The Buccaneers led the Muskegon Big Reds 13 to 0, going into the final period before a record crowd of 8,000, only to be tied in the last minute of play. The line, outweighed by 12 pounds, played brilliant ball, while Rescorla was the running sensation of the game. He alone piled up 227 yards of the team's 286. Grand Haven was without the services of two regulars, All-State Al Molenkamp and Frank Maggoire. This added weight and experience could have meant much in those tiring minutes of the last quarter. .J Wes Dellffilt- Another senior who Bob Sloolbaack-Bob was a rugged will be missed next season. Wilb is also one of the select seven who will be back next year. V .Adi ff, Hob B1likL'!IldLA tough tackle who kept his side of the line solid as a brick wall. Bob's another one of the select seven. Cuti scores against lonia 12 in a hotly contended game. The Maroon Giants scored in the first quarter, and on the opening kick-off of the second half, Keith jones ran 80 yards for the second touchdown. Rich and Mike Cuti divided the ball carrying with Rescorla and the Bucs scored two touchdowns to Kazoo's one in the last half. The Bucs almost scored again on a long pass play, but lost the ball in the last seconds of the ball game. Ionia 26-6 Grand Haven scored a 26 to 6 victory over a better than average Ionia team. Mike Cuti played mag- nificent ball, plowing through center, dashing around end, and taking a reverse for three touchdowns. Grand Havens final touchdown was a pass from Rescorla to johnson. ff- C7 f' if Z X Lloyz Kieft- Oink opened up the Harry Noordlwf- A good, speedy, holes in the line where we made the blocker who leaves a vacancy that most arda ve. Without him our will be hard to fill. Harry was our All-Conference guard this year. Harold France-Harold's the last of a well represented family and we'll miss all of them considerably. This was Harry's second year on the first team. Bob Ralya-Our sixty-minute man, Bob took a beating, but he returned it with interest. He was the best center in the conference, in our opinion. gills Ng N Ken Boermn-A lad from Spring Lake, Ken played his only year of Varsity ball this year. He played good defensive ball in every game, Muskegon Heights 0-6 Creston was held to a lone counter in the fourth. The fine line play of the Muskegon Heights Tigers, and the brilliant running of Frank Howell, Negro scatback, were more than Grand Haven could handle. The injury of Rich Cuti, star fullback, was just too much for the morale of the team. Ron Poplaski's defensive tackling and Rescorla's offensive running were the bright spots in the Buccaneers play. Creston 3 2 -6 Grand Haven got back on its feet once again and swamped Grand Rapids Craston 32 to 6. The Buccaneers scored twice in the first and third periods and added another six points in the fourth, while The passing of Frifeldt to Hallock set up some of Rescorla's four touchdown jaunts. Ottawa Hills 2 5 -6 The Buccaneers trounced Ottawa Hills 25 to 6, Rescorla, scoring all four touchdowns, was the sensa- tion of the evening in a contest otherwise marred by frequent outbursts of Hsticulfs on the part of the Grand Rapids school. The longest run of the game, however, was by Ottawa Hills, when Kenny jones raced 50 yards against the Grand Haven subs for their lone score. The line defensive work of Noord- hof and Ralya was the bright spot in the Grand Haven forward wall. Daw Poel-Dave played center on offense and backer on defence. His first and only year on the Varsity was a success. Bob Frifeldt-Bob made good in his only year on the Varsity. He was our passer and signal caller. He guided our team to its best record in hfteen years. Mike Cuti-Another mighty mid- get, Mike was a rough boy whose vicious tackling and blocking was the cause of many an enemy bruise. 88 .rl Slave Dybema-Though lacking in experience because of only one year on the Varsity, Steve was never lack- ing in determination and light. Holland 20-0 The Grand Haven Bucaneers finished a hne season Frank Alaggiore-A lighting little halfback who played harder than many a bigger man and did more than his share. Frank is another one of the select seven. by defeating Holland 20 to O on a rain-sopped grid- iron ro win the Ottawa County football championship. lt was the last game for 19 seniors with All-Stater Russ Rescorla leading the attack by scoring all three touchdowns and driving for 166 yards, all but 14 yards of the total gain for the night. The Grand Haven line, lead by its All-State tackle, Al Molen- kamp, was just too tough for the Dutchmen to handle. FOOTBALL RESERVES At the beginning of the I948 schedule, Coach Kjolhedes Reserves were heavy and fast, but lacked experience. Being defeated by Holland in the first game of the season, they came crashing back in the seasons finale to whip the Dutchmen 20 to O. The improved line play of Borchers, Baldus, Leisen, and Ralya along with the speed and hard running of Klukos, Butcher, and Laman in the backfield proved to be the outstanding factor as the season progressed. Although they won but three games all year, their willingness to work and improve themselves will add much to next year's team. The speed of Maggiores defensive play was the spark that we needed. johnson led the scoring spree with 20 points, and Van Schelven had 13. Coach STEVIE SLUK A VARSITY BASKETBALL Grand Rapids Christian 3 8-34 The second game was a nip and tuck battle with the Bucs finally overpowering the Grand Rapids team and winning 58 to 3-1. Again, it was Maggiore who led Grand Haven to victory. He poured in IS points, while Van Schelven had IO. Benton Harbor 3 6-3 7 Benton Harbor edged out Grand Haven 56 to 57 in a thrilling game. The height of the Tigers was a little too much for the Bucs in the closing minutes. Frifeldt with Il points, and Rescorla with 10 led our scoring. Grand Rapids Catholic Central 46-29 Grand Haven had little trouble subduing the Grand Rapids Catholic team 46 to 29. The steadiness of Bob Van Schelven was the Bucs big threat as he scored 13 points. He is only a junio and will be a valuable asse for next year's team. 92 -0-' Muskegon 3 5 -63 Grand Haven journeyed to Muskegon and played the poorest game of the season as the Big Reds won 53 to 35. Van Schelven and johnson managed to score 12 and 10 points respectively. Grand Rapids Holiday Tournament Grand Rapids Christian 3 3 -32 Meeting Christian for the second time. Grand Haven started its Holiday Tournament campaign by beating them 33 to 32. The whole team participated in the scoring with Frifeldt leading the way with seven points. Greenville 43 -3 3 Although the Bucs defeated Greenville 43 to 53, it was a rough and hard fought game all the way. Maggiore led the scoring with 13 points, while Keift. whose fine pivot work was outstanding, dumped in 12. Grand Rapids Union 3 5-20 Playing one of their best ball games of the season. Grand Haven won the Grand Rapids tournament from Union 55 to 20. The scoring was well divided, with Heyblom showing up with 12 points. Whitehall 5 1 -44 Traveling to XVhitehall and expecting to meet a weak Class C school, Grand Haven was lucky to come out with a 51 to 44 victory. Van Schelven and Maggiore divided most of the scoring with 13 and l2 points, respectively, while Mahoney was Whitehall's big threat by dumping in 21 points. rv' I I' I Kalamazoo 3 8-3 4 Showing the iinesse and speed displayed in other games, Grand Haven downed the Maroon Giants 38 to 54. Van Schelven again was the Bucs top scorer with l l points, followed by Keift, who made 10. Muskegon Heights 41 -5 6 After holding the Tigers down in the first three periods, the Bucs were finally outrun 56 to 41 in the iinal stanza. Grand Havens strength was well divided with Keift pushing through nine points. B. johnson and Green paced the Heights with 17 and 15 points respectively. Holland 3 6-5 0 Taking an early lead which they never re- linquished, the Holland Dutchmen handed the Bucs their fourth conference defeat, 50 to 56. It was poor defensive work on the part of Grand Haven, and the fine backboard work of Holland's Vander Kuy that gave them the victory. Benton Harbor 44-46 ln their second encounter with the Tigers, the Bucs were again narrowly squeezed out, after leading the whole game. The fine pivot work of johnson, who scored I7 points, and the sharp shooting of Van Schelven and Heyblom kept Grand Haven in the struggle. Muskegon 3 8-2 7 After their poor showing against Muskegon in the first game. Grand Haven came back to take the second. 38 to 27. The Bucs fourth quarter splurge of I8 points was too much for the Big Reds. john- son, with ll points, and Keift with 10, sparked the local attack. Rescorla led the local attack with 13 points. Muskegon Heights 48-54 Grand Haven outscored Heights on field goals, but the battle at the free-throw line fell to the Heights with Jacobson making 12 out of 13 free throw attempts. johnson scored 15 points, followed by Van Schelven and Rescorla with 10 each. Holland 48-5 5 Grand Haven ended its regular season with a defeat at the hands of the Holland Dutchmen 55 to 48. The fine offensive work of Israels was the high spot of the Holland team. Frifeldt was high scorer for Grand Haven with 10 points. District Tournament Godwin Heights 32-60 The Buccaneers were knocked out of the Class B District Tourney by a fast and smooth working Godwin quintet by a score of 60 to 32. Grand Haven was completely outclassed by the accurate shooting of the Godwin five, who made 60 percent of their Hoot shots. Maggiore scored 14 points for the losing cause.
