ALBERT WEAVERS The Senior Class of 1947 dedicates this book to Albert XVeavers, a former janitor at Grand Haven High School. We shall always remember him for his willingness to help us, his obliging manner in granting us favors, and his loyalty to our school. Mr. Weavers resigned from his duties as a janitor after having served the school in that capacity for twenty-eight years. He endeared himself to the students and those he came in contact with by being so friendly and cheerful. He usually had an amusing little story to tell his friends and acquaintances that could brighten up any dull moment. He helped us with our Saturday Nite Club and innumerable other projects. Bert, as all of us fondly address him, was a true friend of the students. We can think of no one to whom we would rather dedicate our 1947 Blue and Gold. Our hats are off to you, Bert. 8 In Appreciation . MILFORD WHITE, HUGO WALTER, HENRY GROTERS For being so friendly and kind to all the students, for being so Willing to help us out around school, and for keeping our school in tip-top condition for us to use, we express our deep appreciation to the janitors - of Grand Haven High School. 9 SCHOOL SONG Hail to the Blne and Gold Cheer them along the 'way Onward to victory May we win again today U Rah Rah Cheer for the Blue and Gold Long may they reign .rapfeme Shoal 'til the echoex ring For the glory of oar team 10 '7 .V7 :QE V 73 v':.z4.a.X,L2.C 300 1.3 CLASS OF 1947: The task of your generation is to maintain peace. World peace is not a thing to be fought for and then forgotten. It must be constantly sought. No matter where you live you can make your contribution to this end. You can resolve to reject hatred and prejudice in favor of logic and intelligent judgment in dealing with other peo- ples. In this task our generation has failed. Yours must succeed. Sincerely yours, GLENN H. OLSEN, Principal TO THE STUDENT BODY: Are you prepared and ready to become citizens of one world ? How you live, what you think, what attitudes you build into the framework of your lives, as well as your whole outlook, will determine the kind of a world we shall have tomorrow. Looking back over the last four years we see that this poem is so true. Weren't we green frosh though? It took much to show us that we did like high school. We chose as our freshman class officers: President, jack Paterekg Vice-President, Martin Rothig Secretary, Mary Harbeckg and Treasurer, Jack Westerhof. We sold frost-bites at the Junior Play and made a collection of waste paper during the winter and spring months. As sophs we really did think ourselves something. We were the peppiest sopho- more class that has ever wandered through these great halls. At the class meeting, jack Paterek was again chosen President, Bob Mersereau was chosen Vice President, Julius Resner, Secretary, and Kenneth De Witt, Treasurer. We were prominent in many school activities and participated in sports. Our greatest ambition was to become upper class- men. At last we were juniors. jack Paterek won home place again as President 'of our class, Don Ducey, Vice-President, Helen Van Burgel, Secretary, and jack Mead, Treas- urer. Giving the Junior Play and the Junior-Senior Prom was a great deal of work, but a lot of fun too. junior Miss, our successful comedy, won us much praise. Our Prom proved a big affair with a grand turn-out. We also helped a lot with Saturday Nite Club. Seniors! Can we believe it? jack Patrek took his fourth term as President, Ken DeWitt, Vice-President, Bob Mersereau, Secretary, and Harold Krause, Treasurer. We made our last year a grand and glorious one- our Senior Play, Nothing But The Truth, was a huge success. A good time was had by all on our skip-day-our annual will go down in history-- the juniors gave us a ''never-to-be-forgottenl' Prom-and the solemn graduation exercises drew our four hectic years to a close. We, the class of june 5, 1947, Ca date we thought would never comeb regretfully leave Grand Haven High School. We leave behind us the four most precious years of our lives, and we also leave happy, never-to-be-repeated, good times, and many friends. But we take with us knowledge and character that will help us make our place in the world, and best of all we take fond memories which we will forever cherish. BLUE AND GOLD The Blue and Gold staffls chief concern this year was, of course, the publishing of the annual. Lots of time and effort were put forth to get the yearbook to press on time, but We waded through all our diiiculties and managed to make the deadline. Besides getting out the Blue and Gold, however, the annual board put on an assembly on February 12 to launch the subscription drive for the annual. We also sponsored a paper drive on Saturday, April 26, which helped us earn a little money which could be used to help pay for the annuals. We hope we have given you a Blue and Gold that you'll always remember. 65 Seated Qleft to rightj : Mr. Thoma, advisor. SATURDAY NITE CLUB This makes Saturday Nite Club's 4th successful year. Its success is due to the cooperation of the students, teachers, and the janitors, and their will- ingness to work. Vernon Kline and Gordon Hansen were co- chairmen of Saturday Nite Club. There was also a permanent chairman for every committee, but it would be impossible to name all the people that gave their time and energy toward making this such a successful organization. Mr. Thoma, who is responsible for our having a Saturday Nite Club, and the permanent commit- tee purchased a new coke cooler, a new pop-corn machine, and twenty-five new card tables this past year. Grand Haven Sanitary Dairy loaned the organization a new ice-cream cooler. Mr. Merwin organized a twelve-piece dance band which played every other Saturday night. The juke-box furnished music on the remaining Satur- day nights. The attendance at the club'i did not drop under two hundred and fifty every week, The students thank the janitors and the teachers, without whose help the club could not function. The janitors have helped with the clean-up job and each teacher chaperoned two nights at Saturday Nite Club during each semester. GIRL'S ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION Preficient I - - - Ruth W'ilson Secretary-Treamrer - - - Ann Resner Advifor - - - Miss Mary K. Babcock The Girls' Athletic Association started offits new year with a new teacher advisor, Miss Babcock. Having such a large membership caused some trouble in arranging our Wednesday games so that everyone could participate, but we used what facilities we had and did our best to play as much and as long as possible. After the informal initiation in September, which. incidentally, provided us with a great deal of fun, the formal initiation solemnized the membership of a large new group of girls. 66 Sealed fleft to rightj 1 Harriet McCall, Barb Wipperfurth, Mary Burr, Mary Jo Pellegrom, Annette Fisher, Muriel Jacobson, Arlene Swart, Nancy Dornbos, Muriel Murphy. GIRL'S ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION The basketball tournament proved to be the most exciting event throughout the year and added to this were newcomb, volley ball, soccer, tennis, and bowling contests. Aside from the sports angle we sponsored a pep assembly and sold paddle pops at basketball games as a means of raising money for awards, a party, and our pages in the Blue and Gold. On April 18 the Grand Haven G. A. A. was invited to Holland as guests of the Holland High School G. A. A. Tournaments between the two organizations were held in the afternoon and a potluck supper was planned that evening. At night a dance was held in honor of the Grand Haven girls. This is the first year that anything like this has been planned for the two schools but it is hoped that we will be able to invite the Holland G. A. A. here next year and make it an annual affair. 67 Seated Cleft to rightjz Advisor, Miss M. Young, Arlene Cook, Bob Mersereau, Larry Minuth, Marlys Pierson, Glen Ringleberg, June Mac Neill. Presenting the operetta took many weeks of hard preparation but we felt well rewarded in the end by having it judged as tops in entertainment and quality. Besides presenting the operetta, we took part in numerous chapel services, gave two assemblies and presented programs for the Presbyterian Womens Missionary Society, the Kiwanis, and the Tuesday Musicale. We are still looking forward to getting our new robes. LUDINGTON The opening game of the '46 season saw our Bucs romp to a 19 to 13 victory over a powerful Ludington team. The Ludington Orioles scored first. The Bucs then rolled down the field and Westerhof drove across the line to even the score. The kick that fol- lowed proved to be good, giving Grand Haven a one point lead. At the beginning of the third quarter Westerhof again crashed over the goal line. The Orioles also scored and the score read 13 to 13 at the beginning of the fourth quarter. The last quarter saw another 6 points pushed across for the Bucs. This was the seventh consecutive year in which Grand Haven defeated the Ludington Orioles. Bottom Row: Jim Roberts, Bob Taylor, Dick Hallock. x on s BENTON HARBOR Almost 3000 fans watched the odds go against the Buccaneers as they played their first Southwest Conference game of the season. Four fumbles set up by the Bucs scored two touchdowns for Benton Harbor. The visitors fumbled on the 20 yard line and Ed Boeve recovered. After two more plays, Al Ver Berkmoes went over for Grand Haven's only touchdown. The final score was 19 to 7. MUSKEGON The largest crowd in Grand Haven's Gridiron History packed Green Hill Field to see the long-awaited Muskegon - Grand Haven football game. The Bucs played Muskegon on even terms until midway in the second quarter. Then, by taking advantage of several breaks, the Big Reds rolled up two touchdowns and the half ended with a score of 20 to 7. The third quarter saw another 7 points scored for Muskegon. The final score was 27 to 7. KALAMAZOO CENTRAL Completely outfought and outclassed by a hard-charging Kazoo Central team, the Buccaneers were defeated 26 to 0. Lacking drive and spirit, the local squad never ad- vanced beyond their opponents 25-yard line. ' ION IA Traveling to Ionia, the Blue and Gold Warriors, playing the first school in their class since the Ludington game, whipped a fighting Ionia eleven, 35 to 15. Led by the passing combination of Wfesterhof to Boeve and the outstanding running of Ver Duin and Rescorla, the Bucs defeated a team rated as the best Class B team in the state. MUSKEGON HEIGHTS Playing an outstanding defensive game, the Havenites held the state champions, the Muskegon Heights Tigers, to three touchdowns. Krause, on the line, and Roberts, in the backfield, turned in the best defensive play of the evening. On the last play of the game, Grand Haven scored its only touchdown on an eight yard aerial from Westerhof to Rescorla. Final score: Muskegon Heights 19, Grand Haven 6. GRAND RAPIDS UNION Meeting Union High on a rain soaked and muddy Green Hill field, the Bucs lost by a heart-breaking score of 6-O. Two downfield marches were halted at the Union live yard line. Although Union expected an easier game, they found themselves threatened throughout the entire contest. Somehow we feel that holding the big Class A team to a 6 point margin was a victory in itself. A KALAMAZOO STATE HIGH In the last game at Green Hill Field the Buccaneers ran thru Kalamazoo in the last half to win 25 to 14. On the first play of the game, Jim Ver Duin raced 45 yards to the fifteen yard line, and after four more plays, scored. The kick for the extra point was not good. In the third quarter, the Bucs broke loose for two touchdowns in which Westerhof, Rescorla, and Ver Berkmoes alternated in carrying the ball. At the start of the fourth quarter, on a march of 62 yards, Rescorla went over from the seventeenth yard line for a touchdown. The rest of the game was played by subs, to prepare them for next year. During this time the State High team scored two touchdowns. HOLLAND Grand Haven lost an exciting game to Holland High in the last two minutes of play by a score of 14 to 7. Our fighting Bucs were the victims of an aerial blitz in the fourth quarter. Grand Haven's touchdown came on a 75 yard downfield march with Westerhof and Rescorla carrying the ball. Paterek and De Witt excelled on the line with their excel- lent defensive play. 91 Seated Qleft to rightjz Howard Groeneveld, Norman Baggott, Howard Skinner, Stuart Engel Robert Lampson. GRAND HAVEN vs. HOLLAND-Playing their best game of the season, the Haven- ites were barely edged out by the Dutchmen 55-52 on the slippery Holland floor. The Bucs were behind 46-37 at the end of the third quarter but turned on the heat in the fourth quarter to loop in 15 points. Baggott and Boeve with 16 and 15 points respectively led the Blue and Gold offense. GRAND HAVEN vs. BENTON HARBOR-Scoring 19 points in the second quarter, the Benton Harbor Tigers went on to win 63-48. The local five played the taller Harborites on even terms for three quarters but the big lead piled up in the second quarter gave the Tigers their margin of victory. GRAND HAVEN vs. MUSKEGON -Using their height to good advantage, the Big Reds downed the smaller fighting Blue and Gold quintet 49-30 on the local hard- wood. GRAND HAVEN vs. FREMONT-The Havenites were knocked out of the Class B District tourney by a fast and powerful Fremont quintet. Completely outclassed by the accurate shooting of the Fremont five, the Bucs played one of their poorest games of the season. The final score was 62-37. 97 I S E r sg f, ff , , fr g U , , ,Q 3 7. BASEBALL Over 40 boys responded to Coach Steve Sluka's call for candidates for the 1947 baseball team. Although practice was delayed a few weeks by bad weather, the team is gradually whipping into shape. With 5 regulars back from last year's winning team, Coach Sluka has hopes for another successful season, such as the one he had last year. Although the Buccaneers are, as yet, a little weak offensively, the hurling of four-year veteran Johnny Mahder and the excellent defensive play of the rest of the team should offset this weakness. The schedule for the 1947 baseball season is as follows: 98 April 15 April 18 April 22 April 24 April 29 May 2 May 6 May 9 May 15 May 16 May 20 May 22 May 27 june 2 B A S E B A L L Muskegon Sr. Marys Whitehall - Holland Christian Muskegon Heights Muskegon St. Marys Holland - - Muskegon - - Kalamazoo Central Zeeland A - - Muskegon Heights Holland Christian Benton Harbor - Holland - Muskegon SCHEDULE ir Here There There Here There Here Here There There There Here Here There There - f f,t A .-1 233 l'Xs..J,4 in ,- First Row Qfrom left to rightj z Ben Lowell, jim Roberts. They are Howie Groeneveld, jack Paterek, jack Plowman, Felix Pytlinske, Stan Stolarz, and jim Roberts. These boys have played a lot of tennis and should be able to come through with a long record of wins. The list of new candidates this year includes Bill Law, Ben Lowell, Gordon Klouw, Bud Masselink, Ralph TenHave, Midge Ve-rPlank, and Bill Clink. These boys show signs of promise even at this early date. We feel assured that these players, because of hard work and excellent coaching, will make up a fine team, and that Grand Haven will keep up its reputation as having produced a winning tennis team each year. The cheerleaders were under the direc- tion of Miss Babcock, who has helped them work out many new and different cheers. INTRAMURAL BASKETBALL The Reds won the High School intramural basketball championship this year by defeating the Indians 25-11 in the finals. There were six teams in the league and each team played 25 games. The season was broken into 5 rounds with 5 games per round. There were 41 players on the six teams that competed each week at the Ferry or High School gymns in games after school hours under the direction of Coach Steve Sluka.
