May it always remain to those who read it a reminder of the many pleasant experi- ences we have shared together. Now, as we are about to leave and become alumni of Grand Haven High School, we begin to recall the numerous incidents and experiences that have made our brief stay in high school more pleasant. The memory of these experiences is sometime dimmed by years, but if in any way this annual makes more vivid these memories, our purpose is fully accomplished. l4l Q M. The 1946 Senior Class dedicates this year book to Doris Balgooyen, Mr. Olsen's secretary. Doris was engaged as Mr. Olsen's secretary the year that we entered high school as freshmen, and her willingness to help us in every way she could has made our short four years in high school a little more pleas- ant. Her friendly smile and cheery dis- position have, indeed, made Doris a true friend of every member of our class. l8l IN MEMCDIQV. There is no death! What seems so is transitiong This life of mortal breath Is but a suburb of the life elysian, Whose portal we call Death. Longfellow. The memory of Adrian Chittenden, who started high school with us, is still alive in the minds of all of us. He will always be remembered as an ambitious and hard working student, who was well liked by everyone. l9l 1 5 s . B M,-. Q M V. 'i IX .W wx .g Q vr -' RX? 2 ,A rim-I Quan i 9 ..K.. Q, 5 2 2 3 n To the Student Body: The youth of tomorrow will need a well-trained mind in a healthy body since we are entering an era of highly competitive living. Success will come to those who are willing to pay the price of preparation. Make the most of your opportunity. EARL H. BABCOCK, Superintendent. l12l .4 E fp 1 i , ar are fir Seniorr of 1946: During the war our whole national effort was bent in the direction of destruction, the destruction of our enemies' homes, his cities, his transportation facilities, and his armies. As a nation we were successful in our effort. Our enemies have been defeated and destroyed. We now face a world littered with the debris of war. Millions of our fellowmen, allies and former enemies alike, are without homes, families, or food. Hunger stalks almost every country in the world. These are some of the crying needs requiring a solution. Upon your generation lies the responsibility of finding a just answer to these and other problems. I can think of no greater honor that could come to you than to have it said by your friends, He played an important part in straightening out the mess left by the war. Good Luck! S.ers here next year, Good-bye, good luck, and don't be blue Though it's au revoir from us to you. - Josephine DeVrzer 7 Ng Y ' 1943 1944 1945 1946 welll IAXIWGYS l2ZfTl6fTllDZI' . Our first year at Grand Haven High School, that feeling of anticipation, the get-acquainted parties with the upper classmen being so swell, electing Dolores George, president, jack Hoffman, vice-president, Lois Klempel, secretary, and Beth Mersbach, treasurer, our eagerness to please, the exam dance, which we tried so hard to make successful -- suddenly it was over and our first year was behind us. Starting out our second year with zest and pep, that feeling of confidence, helping the Saturday Nite Club to put on their all school party, the election of our class officers-john Van Stratt, president, Ray jeske, vice-president, Mary Vanden Berg, secretary, and Jack Tysman, treasurer. Being upper classmen at last! Tearing our hair out over history tests, Hamlet, and chemistry quizzes, the juke box at Presley's-antidote for all cases of scholastic poisoning, that gay feeling, those pink and blue slips, electing john Van Stratt, president, Ed Fosheim, vice-president, Dick Woods, secretary, LaVerne Boeve, treasurer, the scrap drive-our contribution to the war effort, the junior - Senior prom- our gift to the seniors, soft lights and dreamy music, looking forward to being seniors-a long awaited realization of our dreams. Coming back this year, feeling important at last but pretty insignificant after all, getting our senior pictures taken, deciding to take it easy and finding we had twice as much work to do as before, our senior play, Kind Lady -a lot of work but also a lot of fun, electing Ed Fosheim class president, jim Ribbink, vice president, Don Rescorla, secretary, Linn Soule, treasurer, worrying about Blue and Gold deadline-but not too much, that loose-end feeling, senior skip day with most of us singing Why don't we do this more often? , the prom-our last high school formal, graduation night with our hands hot and sticky and our knees trembling foolishly, feeling this is the end-as if a page had just been turned, never to be read again. The years may be long, hard, and very different, but we'll always remember. l59l -- Xllxl, X Semen PLAY ? fl P X6 Q I s I .-J' p ANNUAL BOARD 5 J' d' PRQM cr 5 ff EM my 'C JLJNICDRS JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS Prefirienx ........ The Saturday Nite Club Under the direction of Mr. Thoma, the Saturday Nite Club has completed its third successful year with an average attendance of over 215. Each week a different advisory took charge of the setup and cleanup, with some advisories sponsoring something new and different such as Sweater Swing, Sock Shuffle, Atomic Bomb, Half and Half Hop, and Sadie Hawkins Dance. An orchestra was sometimes engaged to furnish music for dancing. The club has supported itself well enough financially to have been able to buy a new juke box, pin ball machines, card tables, and many other things which have added to the attractiveness of the club. The Grand Haven High School is the only school in the state to have an organization of this kind. Here the school board, faculty and students cooperate to stage a weekly gathering place for students. i561 Row 3: Bob Holtrop, Donn Kieft, john Bottje, Dick Langefeld, Howard Kohloff, Jeanie Roloff, Nan Broekema, june MacNeill, Pete Kennedy, jim Kistler, jack Van Lopik, Lawrence Minuth. The band was kept very busy at the beginning of the school year playing at six football games, thereby getting a late starr in concert performances. The first concert was given in February and was succeeded by a later one in May. A new event was inaugurated in 1946. The first Ottawa County Band Festival was held in Holland, with bands from Zeeland, Hudsonville, Holland, and Grand Haven participating. In addition to Holland, the band played at contests in Grand Rapids and Lansing. They also provided music for several assemblies and chapel services. In cooperation with the junior Chamber of Commerce, they presented a Band Revue in April. In February, several members participated in a solo and ensemble festival at Green- ville. The band concluded its school year by marching in the Memorial Day Parade. 1671 QAVT ogre 0 gif -9,7 E fi. VHHT LATE N lx 11. 11, GATE E? FQGTBALI. 1945 Even though the Grand Haven football team didn't look very powerful in all its conference games, it showed that it was one of the most aggressive and hard-charging class B teams in the state by beating Ludington and Birmingham, each of whom went on through the season to win the championships of their respective conferences. It is the opinion of many people that if Grand Haven would play more teams in its own class, it would invariably win the mythical state Class 'B' i' championship. Grand Haven is just too good for class B competition and not quite good enough for class GRAND HAVEN VS. - LUDINGTON-Playing in the rain on a very muddy Ferry Field, the Bucs looked sloppy all the first half, but they poured on the coal in the second and won 15-0. BENTON HARBOR-The field at Benton Harbor was more of a swamp than a foot- ball field after an all day rain. The Bucs were swamped 25-0. MUSKEGON-The Big Reds made 19 points in the first quarter, and it looked as if the Bucs would have to be carried off the field in pieces, but suddenly the whole Grand Haven team began to function as a unit, and the powerful offense of Muskegon was forced to a bruising halt. The last three-quarters of the game were hard-fought, and there was no further scoring by either team. The final score was 19-0. KALAMAZOO--The Blue and Gold did a turn-about-face after the Muskegon game and were out-fought, out-played, and left out during all of the game. Kazoo Won easily by a 35-0 score. SOUTH-The Trojans were surprised to see the competition that was given them by this team that had been so downtrodden the week before, but the Grand Rapids Class 'A' school had little trouble defeating the every-tryin', ever-fightin' Bucs, 20-6. l72l MUSKEGON HEIGHTS-As in the Muskegon game, the Bucs lost this game in the first quarter when the boys from the Heights piled up 25 points. All the rest of the game, the Bucs and Tigers were pretty evenly matched. The Tigers won 37-12. LUDINGTON ST. SlMON'S-This game was scheduled for the first team substitutes on an open date for the Bucs, When the subs got through, the Ludington boys were of the opinion that the entire first team had been employed in their massacre, 2 5-6. BIRMINGHAM-This class B school from near Detroit was picked by Detroit sportswriters to beat us by at least three touchdowns. They were wrong. We won this bitterly fought game l3-0. HOLLAND-As usual, this game was fought with its traditional fury, and as usual Holland was favored by lil points. All they got was seven, but this wasn't enough to win because Grand Haven likewise had seven. 7-7. SCHEDULE Ludington . . . Here Benton Harbor . . There Muskegon .... There Kalamazoo . . . ISII f Z l Qi ASKET BALL Basketball 1945-46 The Grand Haven Buccaneers started the 1945-46 season with Mr. Sluka as the new coach and with a green and inexperienced team. For the most part, the Bucs played in competition out of their class but made a record of 7 wins and 10 losses. Eight seniors played their last season for Grand Haven. Four lettermen will return to form the nucleus of next year's team. GRAND HAVEN 21 -ZEELAND 19 The Bucs 1945-46 season started off with a real thriller when the Bucs played a see-saw battle on the Zeeland floor. Ribbink dropped in a bucket in the closing seconds of play to knot the game at 19 all. Then the Bucs went on to win in the overtime. Van Stratt led the teams scoring, and with Ribbink, stood out in this ball ame. g GRAND HAVEN 34-NORTH MUSKEGON 20 At North Muskegon the Bucs walked off with victory number two by the score of 34-20. DeWitt with 13 points led Grand Haven in scoring. GRAND HAVEN 29-MUSKEGON ST. JOSEPH 12 In their Hrst home game of the year, Grand Haven handed the Class C Muskegon St. Joseph team a 29-12 drubbing. DeWitt again led the Bucs scoring with 10 points. GRAND HAVEN 24-FREMONT 20 ln a slow moving first half, the Bucs were out-scored and out--played, but in the second half our offense, led by Kistler and Engle, got started and we walked off with our third straight victory. GRAND HAVEN 18-KALAMAZOO 28 With the invasion of the tall Kalamazoo team, Grand Haven suffered its first defeat 28-18. Grand Haven's inability to find the hoop proved very disastrous. Van Stratt led our team's scoring with 6 points. GRAND HAVEN 16-MUSKEGON HEIGHTS 54 After holding the Heights' Tigersl' on even terms for the first quarter, the Bucs fell far behind and were easily defeated 34-16. Van Stratt was the only player to hit the basket consistently and garnered eight points. GRAND HAVEN 59-HOLLAND 56 On a slippery Holland court the Bucs looked much improved over the previous Week, but went down under the tall Dutch by the score of 56-59. With 12 points apiece, Van Stratt and DeWitt led Grand Haven's attack. GRAND HAVEN 29-BENTON HARBOR 51 Before a very strong Benton Harbor outfit, the Bucs suffered their fourth straight defeat by the score of 51-29. The game was a thriller despite the score. Van Stratt again led Grand Haven with 9 points. 1821 GRAND HAVEN 30-MUSKEGON 37 The Bucs matched the sharp shooting Muskegon Reds point for point for three quarters, but in the fourth quarter Muskegon forged ahead to defeat the Bucs 37-30. Van Stratt with ten points was Grand Havens leading scorer. GRAND HAVEN 23-KALAMAZOO 39 On their own floor, the Kalamazoo team beat the Buccaneers for the second time by the score of 39-23. The Bucs had trouble getting started and were trailing the entire game. Ribbink led the teams scoring with 6 points. GRAND HAVEN 30-MUSKEGON HEIGHTS 29 ln the most thrilling game of the year, the Bucs turned on the heat after trailing most of the game, and went ahead to defeat the Heights' Tigers by the score of 30-29. Ribbink turned in a fine defensive game besides sharing scoring honors with Kistler and Van Stratt. GRAND HAVEN 35-HOLLAND 53 Before a large crowd, the Bucs were again defeated by their county rivals to the tune of 53-35. Hollands height proved to be a deciding factor in this game. Final score: Holland 53-Grand Haven 35. By dropping in 16 points, Van Stratt led the local attack. GRAND HAVEN 41 -BENTON HARBOR 56 After a bad first quarter, the Blue and Gold caught fire and matched the Benton Harbor team point for point for the rest of the game. Still unable to overcome the first quarter margin the Bucs fell 56-41. Boeve with 16 points led Grand Havens attack. GRAND HAVEN 27-MUSKEGON 63 Showing a complete offensive and defensive slump, the Buccaneers were outclassed by a fast Big Red quintet. The Bucs were trailing from the start and went down 63-27. Boeve and Carrier tallied 6 points to lead our team. GRAND HAVEN 32-RAVENNA 21 After trailing in the first quarter, the Buccaneers came back strong to beat a game and aggressive Class C Ravenna squad. Final score: Grand Haven 32, Ravenna 21. DeWitt with 13 points and Van Stratt with 10, were the big guns on offensive. DISTRICT TOURNAMENT GRAND HAVEN 29-FREMONT 27 In the District semi-finals, Grand Haven defeated the Fremont Packers 29-27. It was a nip and tuck battle all the way, with Grand Haven surging ahead in the closing minutes. Van Stratt with 12 points again led the Blue and Gold. GRAND HAVEN 20-LUDINGTON 30 The Buccaneers were downed by the unbeaten Ludington Orioles 30-20 in the District finals. After holding the Orioles on even terms the first half, the Bucs offense stalled and Ludington went ahead to win.
