The Buccaneer TO THE STUDENT BODY: Our nation's greatest resources are not found in its streams, mountains, mines, or fertile soil, but in the youth of the land. This nation needs young men and women with trained minds - minds that can think through the problems confront- ing a world longing for peace and security. You have a responsibility, too, so prepare yourselves that you can accept this challenge. Sincerely yours, EARL H. BABCOCK, Superintendent. fl2l The 'Buccaneer TO THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1945: Since December 7, 1941, the United States has been at war. You were freshmen then. Today when you leave high school some of you will take your place in the Armed Forces of our country and some, your place, in the production lines to help finish the job. The conclusion of the war does appear to be on the horizon, and with it comes the problems of peace. I believe you can make no greater contribution as a citizen of the United States than to take an active interest in studying and promot- ing an understanding of the forces needed for an enduring peace, Sincerely yours, GLENN H. JACK RICHARD DE HAAN JACK KATI' JAMES F. DE SPELDER WARREN E. MASTENBROOK GELBERT LA VERN E HEADLY RALPH L. SECORY DARWIN O. SMITH WILLIAM VIENING, JR. OTTO HEPNER 12541 The Buccaneer Class is ory You can always tell a freshman by his vacant stare, You can always tell a sophomore by the silly things be'll wear, You can always tell a junior by bis silly strut and such, You can always tell a senior, but you cannot tell him maria! Looking back over the years we see that this poem is so true. Weren't we green frosh though? It took much to show us that we did like high school. We chose Don Wessel, president, Barbara Miner, vice president, 'Virginia Neitring, secretary, and Stuart Zysk, treasurer, our first class ofiicers. We did get a good foothold in March though, by giving the St, Patrick's Dance. What if we did start out by going in the red! We enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. As sophs we really did think ourselves quite something. Vile were the peppiest sophomore class that has ever wandered through these great halls. We again spon- sored the St. Patrick's Dance, going deeper into debt. At the class meeting, Don W'essel was again elected to lead us. Elizabeth Marshall, was chosen vice president, Chuck Hamm, secretary, and Bob Sluka, treasurer. We broke a lot of fingernails and tore a lot of trousers in the scrap drive, but we did our part. Our greatest am- bition was to be upper classmen. At last we were juniors. Don Wessel won honor place once more. Len France became vice president, Virginia Neitring, secretary, and Mable Bolthouse, treas- urer. Giving the Junior Play, and the Junior-Senior Prom was a great deal of work, but a lot of fun too. Ever Since Eve, our successful dramatic endeavor, won us much acclaim. Our prom proved a big affair with a grand turn-out. Our class was a great help in organizing the new Sat. Nite Club. Seniors! Can we believe it? Our class had dwindled down because so many of our boys had left for the armed forces. We miss them, but we're proud of them. Don W'essel took his fourth term as president, Bob Hood, vice presidentg Virginia Neitring, her third term as secretary, and Lael Pierson, treasurer, We made our last year a grand and glorious one - a good time was had by all on our skip day - our annual will go down in history- the juniors gave us a lovely prom - and the solemn graduation exercises drew our four hectic years to a close. We, the class of june 7, 1945, fa date we thought would never comej regret- fully leave Grand Haven High School. We leave behind us four of the most precious years of our lives, and we also leave happy, never-to-be-repeated, good times, and many friends. But we take with us knowledge and character that will help us to make our place in the world, and best of all we take fond memories which we will cherish always. i351 lass Vile, the Senior Class of 1945, Grand Haven High School, bequeath, in this last will and testament, our all -with the exception of our memories, which will remain with us always. 'tru ei,-, I U51 The Buccaneer The 1944 Football Season LUDINGTON I4 - 6-Starting with a green team the Buc's team overpowered the Orioles. VerMurlen, Boeve, and Hanson led the attack. BENTON HARBOR 7 - 6-The Tigers won a hard fought game. The Bucs came from behind at the half to score a touchdown, only to have the place-kick hit the crossbar. MUSKEGON I3 - 7-The Reds behind 7-6, pushed over a touchdown in the last 50 seconds of play. The Bucs scored on a Hashy razzle dazzle play that had eight men handling the ball, KALAMAZOO 14-0-Playing on a damp night on a strange field the Kazooks rolled up two touchdowns. The Bucs, out-score , were not out-fought, for they gave valiant account of themselves. MUSKEGON HEIGHTS 27 - U--After scoring on a freak play in the first half, the strong Tigers pushed across 5 scores in the last half to win. G. R. SOUTH 40 - 7-The only team this year to penetrate the impregnable South line, the Bucs had the score tied 7-7, but were finally overwhelmed by the powerful Trojans. BIRMINGHAM 6 - 6-In a big intersectional battle the Bucs scored hrst, and at the half led 6-0, The Birminghamers came back strong to tit the score 6-6. The Bucs scored another touchdown in the fourth quarter, but it was called back for illegal blocking. HOLLAND 6 - 0-Losing to their Ottawa County rivals in the last 19 seconds was a bitter pill, It was a bitterly contested game all the way on a bitter cold day. The Bucs were again plagued by bad luck: they scored a touchdown in the third quarter that was called back. .ii New-if i741 :.:: 3 2 'v 3 f 5 ' 1 5 .. if g . -if S 15 h Q MMMMM if ,QS JS 5.141 Razr: I lfroul Roux' lim ,-f Roux' FIRST TEAM Huh Hood, l.glVcrnu Bucvc. Corky saw action in a good share of the games, and he showed up very well every time. Buc fans will miss his clean fast play in the com- ing season. ARTHUR HANSON: junior - Center. Art was the work horse of the team, and his excellent rebound playing made him fit in well in the Buc's line-up. We certainly hope to see Art back next year, for his calmness and clean play will be a necessity to the Blue and Gold. EUGENE MILLER: Senior - Guard, Butts was the sparkplug of all the games. He is a rebound artist, and without his high jumping ability and good defensive playing, our team would have been lost. CHARLES HAMM: Senior - Forward. Chuck's accurate shooting and fast ball hand- ling placed him on the Bucs. He looked espec- ially good in the Greenville game, with his timely passing and basket making. Next year's team will miss Charlie's spark and zip. BOB SLUKA: Senior - Forward. Bob was one of the main scoring threats of the season, His tricky ball handling and good eye for baskets placed him on the all conference n Basketball team. Next year's team will miss his high scor- ing ability. BOB HOOD: Senior - Guard. Bob, the captain of the squad, was one of the best defensive players in the line up. His con- sistent good playing under the basket helped much to make him the leader of the team. CHARLES DE WITT: junior-Forward. Chuck did not have much of an opportunity to play this season, but, since he will have an- other year at high school, we are sure he will be a mainstay on the team next year. LA VERNE BOEVE: junior - Forward. LaVerne is a scrapper whose spark has been a discerning factor in many games. His playing helped much in the winning over Fremont, and he also looked very good at Muskegon Heights. We hope to see him back for the 1945-'46 sea- son. JOHN VAN STRATT: junior -- Forward. john deserves much credit for his clean con- sistent playing. His spark and hard work made him a high scorer on the Blue and Gold all sea- son. We expect john back next year to lead the team to a good season. The Basketball Season The Buccaneer's court schedule got off to a flying start with four successive victories. Zee- land, St. joseph, and Fremont fell quickly be- fore our victorious basketeers, and then we be- gan our trek in the tough Southwesterncon- ference. The Bucs made an impressive 29-19 victory over Muskegon for their first conference game, but then slowed down with six losses, The Blue and Gold players then whipped Muskegon Heights 45-41, only to be followed by another loss to Holland. The last conference game was played in the home gym with the conference winning Benton Harbor Tigers. The Bucs lost the game 43-58, but only after their almost fault- less ball-playing forced the game into an over- time. The Buccaneers entered and won the district tournanment by drubbing Fremont 33-29. Greenville was our next opponent in the first game of the regional tournament, and the Bucs won over them by a score of 36-26. The regional final game was with Allegan, and the Havenites captured the regional tournament title by outscoring the Allegan Jaguars 47-57. Grand Haven was eliminated in the state tour- nament quarter finals by Sturgis. The Bucs could not seem to find the basket, and the score ended at 39-26. Grand Haven placed Forward Sluka on the all conference team, although the rest of the team also played the type of ball that usually wins those positions. Boeve, De Witt, Hanson, and Van Stratt should return next year, and around these boys a team might be built that will capture honors in the 1945-46 season. lf79l The Buccaneer From Raw: Don De W'itt, john Bottle, Mel Meyer, Iohn Mahder, LaVerne Boeve, Louis Vollmer, Kenny Swiftney, jim Ribbink, jack XVesterhof, Howie Groenevelt, Bob Lyon. Burk Row: Carl Westerhtmf, Manager: Bob Hood, Les Miller, Gordon Carrier, Roger Bolt- house, Lloyd Beekman, jack Paterek, jim Gannon, Butts Miller, Bob Fekete. Baseball - 1945 With eight vets from last year's squad and many promising newcomers out, Coach Cohrs' 1945 team shows great promise, Although hampered by cold and rain, they swept their first two games behind the southpaw slants of sophomore, john Mahder, who was backed up by Miller. hrst base: Ribbink. second baseg Meyer, shortstopg Hood, third baseg Bottje, left fieldg De Wfitt, right field, and Fekete in center field. Mahder's battery mate is big LaVerne Boevc. The Hrst victory came on April 26th over Coopersville, by a 10-0 score, with Mahder pitching a two hit shoutout at Grand Haven. A week later Heights was defeated 3-2 on the same diamond. There are six additional games on the Buc sche- dule: two with Holland, the 9th and 15th of Mayg two with Muskegon, one on May Z2ndg and one with Muskegon Heights, on May 18th: and one with Coopers- villc on the 25th of May. Roux' Felix Pytlinske, Chuck Hamm, Ed Nixon, Bob Sluka, Byron Chapman, jack Hoffman. Tennis The Buc's tennis squad began the 1945 season with twelve men, live of whom are returning from action in past years. The returning veterans are Bob Sluka, Chuck Hamm, Art Hanson, Byron Chapman, and Bud Ver Helst. The remaining players are rookies, who will probably do much toward winning victories in future seasons. There will be three tournament games, and Bob Sluka, who now holcls the honor of being Conference Singles Champ, will make a high bid in these. During the last two years there has been no state meet, but this year there will be one, and it should be a tough one. Grand Haven will enter three doubles teams and three singles. Wfith these, we plan to make the 1915 season one to be remem- bered.
