Foreword Faculty and Students of Grand County High School:- Vve, the Journalism Ctass ot 1952-'53, in presenting this volume of the Mograndah, tlave encteavorect to present an accurate account ot school activities and important events which tiave taken place during this past year, and which are worttiy ot remembrance. 3 Dedication The I952-'53 Mograndah is Dedicafecl +o DR. J. W. WILLIAMS 66 99 Father of the Arches Father of the Arches Millions of years ago the Winds, using small particles of sand as chisels, and aided loy the seasonal temperature changes and storms, loe- gan a jolo of sculpturing which has resulted in the spacious artistic Won- derland lcnovvn as ARCHES NATIONAL MONUMENT. Today, the scenic heauty oi the Arches has loecome nationally, even internationally lcnovvn. lmportant magazines have carried pictures and stories ol the Arches to millions of readers. lndividuals who have seen the color of the desert tell oi its Wonders. As a result, each year lorings greater numlners of people to visit the Monument and see the natural sandstone arches and monolithic formations. Nature provided the heauty found in the Arches long ago. Yet, a lull appreciation lay manliind oi this aesthetic value has loeen only during recent years. ln fact, it Was not until i938 that President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued the proclamation which set aside the present Arches National Monument consisting oi 33,390 acres, attended lay a superin- tendent and rangers who direct the thousands oi visitors and lieep the natural beauties of the area in lasting condition. While the Monument is very young, it is quiet possilole it might have loeen much younger, or perhaps, not even yet set aside, except for the continuous efforts ol one man,-flVloal:J,s respected, lueloved centurian, Dr. rl. VV. Williams. lt Was Dr. Williams who came to lVloalo as a young physician aloout lilty years ago for one particular r-eason. l-le lilced the loeautilul scenery. He not only lilced it,-he tallied aloout it in flowing Words. He told the 5 peopte ot Moab, the organizations ot Grand County, even governmental agencies, ot the scenic values and the need for their preservation. It Was these ettorts ot Dr. Williams, through the Moab Lions Ctuh, the Times independent, county and city officials, that the Arches National Monu- ment came into existence as it is today. Time and the elements cut the crevices, rounded the corners, and mettowed the texture ot the Arches. So time and the elements changed the countenance ot Dr. Williams. The changes ot nature,s forces upon the sandstones only made them more impressive, more aesthetic. A cen- turyts living, White taking away the earmartcs ot youth, only added toenevotence and character to the tace ot Dr. Williams which comes not only from time, hut also from knowing that lite has heen Welt tived. August 3, 1853, was the hirth date ot Dr. Vvittiams. He was horn in a smatt tog cahin with a dirt ttoor in Pike County, Missouri. His father was a farmer. Une ot Dr. Williams' earliest memories is ot helping his mother feed the chickens. The childhood education ot Moah's future citizen was obtained the hard Way tamitiar to many early pioneers ot the West. Dr. Williams continued his puhtic education until he was 18 years of age. During the summers he Worked as a tarmhand to earn enough money to provide his schoot needs. it was during one of these summers that he became overheated White working in a corn tietd. For the next three years he could do no Wort: during the hot summer time. it was in search tor a climate agreeatote for his health which hrought him to the west and event- uatty to Utah. tcontinuect on page 345 6 1. Mograndah to Dr. J. VV. Williams, Moah,s Grand Old Man. The dedica- Q tion comes on the eve of Dr. Williams ' Centennial. He will he 100 years of age KE on August 4, 1953. Few men reach that age, and certainly few men live as rich MRS. KNIGHT and full life as has he. I was hut a few months old when Dr. Williams arrived in Moah to tai-ce up the practice of medicine, and he told me a few years ago that I was his first child patient after his arrival here. I have always considered that an honor. From that time on he played an important role in the iives of all children through trying times of scarlet fever, whooping cough, mumps and other ailments common to growing up. Few of the resi- dents of early days will forget his home calls made on foot if distance permitted, hut in a huggy if the cali happened to he to Castle Valley or more distant paris. HOne man in his time plays many partsf, Such has heen the lite of Dr. Wil- liams. He owned and managed the Williams Drug Store for many years. He had an agency for the Studehaicer wagons and huggies in the early days. He has aiways heen a great lover of the out-of-doors and it was iargeiy through his untiring efforts aiong with others of the community that the Arches National Monument was made a monument. His hohhy of collecting Indian relics, Navajo rugs, native stone, petrified wood, etc., attracted many hundreds of tourists to his museum. He was a successful poultry grower for a numher of years. He also managed a smaii grocery store in his museum huiiding. At the present time he owns and operates the Williams Trailer Vil- lage, Moah's most up-to-date trailer park. And so we see Dr. Williams, life has heen a husy one. He is stiii active and vitally interested' in his community. His day starts early and one caiiing at the post- office generally meets Dr. Williams around 8 a. m. calling for his mail. He is rarely idle. He has set a pattern few people could foiiow as well, and one which it would profit anyone to emulate. 8 oard of ducalion WALTER RONZIO ALVIE HOLYOAK H. W. BALSLEY ....,....,......,,.,,,,,,. As sud- den as was his view of the Colorado river oasis, so was the suddenness loy which he lmew that this was the place he Wanted to call home. The trees stood out in their Winter luareness. The river flowed sluggishly, part- ly clogged with ice. The smolce from the buildings clung to the ground in a haze. This attracted rather than loothered Dr. Williams, with quali- ties of the aesthete, he envisioned the summertime when the trees would contrast the green foliage with the red canyon rims, when the increased waters of the Colorado would lap at the river loanlcs, when the summer heat would send smoke spiraling high into the air. Dr. Williams had Won the education qualifying him as a doctor several years loefore coming to lVloalo. He had practiced in Colorado and Missouri. When he decided to settle in lvloala, he came as a man prepared and experienced to serve the people. ln those days loeing a young doctor did not necessarily mean that a man had acquired Wealth. Dr. Williams, humorously recalls the day he stepped off the stage to malce Moab his home. ul had one dollar and seventy-five cents and a trunlc full of loottlesf, Then With a smile upon his face, 'Tye still got a dollar seventy-tives' Qccupationally he vvas more than just a doctor. One of the first things he did after arriving at Moab Was to rent a main street lauilding, put in a counter and shelves, and taclced up a sign to the effect that the community novv boasted a drug store operated lay Dr. J. FATHER OF THE ARCHES fcontinuecl from page 345 As a physician, he tended to and prescribed for the sick and injured. As a druggist he supplied the ingredients for his prescriptions. Later, since he had ample room in his drug store, he even sold huggies, hringing to Moab what then was a very modern mode of transportation. The people liked this young doctor and his services. He hecame very much in demand as he was the only physician in the area. In fact, if anyone desired the help of some other practioneer of medicine, they had to travel as far as Cortez, Colorado, or Price, Utah. As a result, Dr. Williams attended not only the people residing in Moah, hut also traveled many miles, horseback or hy carriage, to treat the atflictions of persons living in remote places within hoth Grand and San Juan coun- ties. Even though his profession occupied' a great deal of tim-e, Dr. Wil- liams could Hstealn enough time to occasionally visit the areas of scenic heauty surrounding Moab. He rode among the picturesque rock arches and formations in this colorful desert area. In unselfish appreciation he would wish that these wonders could he seen by more people. As the years sped hy, the idea that something should he done to attract travelers to these arches and to preserve them became a fixation. He believed the rock wonders should he monuments to the efforts of time and nature. He wanted them recognized in this way. Dr. Williams spoke often and loud for a national park. After his retirement as a practicing physician, this became his main purpose in life. For some years his efforts brought little results. Then the Lions Club tcontinuecl on page 527 51 FATHER OF THE ARCHES fContinued from page 515 was organized in Moab. He convinced important members of the Lion organization that as a solid and organized group these Lions roar loud and long. They did and the government heard them. On April 12, 1929, United States President Herbert Hoover heard the roar and answered it hy setting aside 4,520 acres as Arches National Monument. But after the proclamation was made, Dr. Williams found it did not include more than a portion of the natural wonders in the vicin- ity. He again pleaded and urged the Moab Lions to roar, louder and longer. Their new roars were written into newspapers. The pleas found the ears of government officials. Eventually, the sounds reached the White House and Franklin D. Roosevelt, then the president. Investiga- tions were made and the needs for a greater Monument were recognized. The new proclamation setting aside a total of 33,930 acres as the new Arches National Monument was made hy President Roosevelt on Novem- her 25, 1938. It was signed hy Dr. Williams, own pen. Arches National Monument is fast becoming recognized as one of the most interesting and scenic spots in the west. Through the support continually rendered hy organizations of Grand County and throughout Utah, along with the personal care of Bates Wilson, Arches Superintend- ent, increased thousands are ahle to see and appreciate this wonderland of stone shapes. But the praise and appreciation now spoken hy thousands of people would not he except for the first voice who hrolce the desert quiet,-Dr. J. VV. Williams, now a centurian, always . . .
