' is-inf The Junior class sponsored one ot the-best-ever Harvest Festivals. The Sesame Street themed festival reminded all of their younger days. A few favorite booths were the Sponge Throw Qsee pic- ture-no wonder it was so popularj, the traditional wedding booth, and. of course, the picture booth starring Bert. Ernie and YOU! The Talent Show master of ceremonies was the distinguished UD Dr. Martin. The show was filled with songs of praise to God. magic shows, smiles, skits and . . .whatever else. The evening was topped off with the crown- ing of the Harvest Festival King and Queen - Ray McHenry and Cathy Pugh. 55.2.2 Q. TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRDR On November IS. I6. and I7. the Theatre-Speech department presented Harper Lee's To Kill A Mocking- bird . Set in Maycomb. Alabama in I935. the play re- corded the experiences of the Finch family - Atticus. Scout and Jem - during the trial of Tom Robinson. After the three performances at Grand Canyon College Ething- ton Theatre, the cast and crew entered the American College Theatre Festival in December. Hanging of the Greens - so very spe- cial! This year's Hanging of the Greens was November 30, I979 at the Canyon gym. The singing and piano playing of Marvin Matthews helped make the even- ing memorable. Gary Youngs led the de- votional to get all in the Christmas Spirit. W, ..-E January Term - oh, what a relief it is! lt's a time to sit back, relax, and be glad you're through the fall semester. lt's a time to get to know one another better. But most of all, it's a time to expand your knowledge about the world around us, or learn a new skill or hobby. All these things make January Term a needed break between semesters. f 4' i 1 ANANA SPLIT Once again ASGCC Activities Board sponsored the Ind Annual 30-foot Banana Split Party. There was ice cream, lots of toppings. nuts. whipped cream and Qof coursej bananas galore. Everyone was stuffed and diets were popular the next week. Afterwards some Activities Board members got creamed Qwith whipped creamy. n, 4 . g 9 uf- HGMECOMI G 80 Homecoming was a little different this year. There were no floats, no crown and no coronation robes. Was it because of the floods? The talent show Magical Musical Memories was terrific with first place going to The Canyon Boys fhang in there Jettej. The 'Lopes team came away victorious with a BIG win over Santa Fe College IOS-69. Ruth Ballard and Richard Sanders were crowned Home- coming Queen and King. Spectators enjoyed the hot sunny day with a hamburger cook- out, popsicles and lots of action on Bright Angel Lawn. Sander's Bandanas came in second place with Bernie's Bombers a close third. Some events in the Almost-Any- thing-Goes were the BIGGER AND BETTER Contest, the obstacle course, the suitcase race. the ameba-switched-shoe-monkey- walk-leap-frog relay, and the ever-so-popu- lar' tug-o-war in the gigantic mud puddle. The story revolves around The Parents who try to get her daughter and his son to marry. But. complications arise! JR RB QUET xii .5 Jil! BLUE HAWAII This year's JRISR Banquet was a Luau to top all Luau's! The Junior class pulled all the stops as they entertained the Seniors to an evening in Hawaii. The scenery was great with a 26-acre lake and a large tiled pool to admire and swim in. Steaks and potatoes were served from the outdoor grill. Bud Kaatz the voice of the 'Lopes was Master of Ceremonies. Grant Teaff, head football coach of the Baylor Bears. was Canyon's special guest speaker. Coach Teaff's talk on winning sent the Canyon athletes away with a more determined effort to win, not onl in sports but in a Christ-like life as well. Each coach introduced his or her team and made comments about the successes they have attained this year. The Antelope Founda- tion presented Todd Dufek with the Roland Beck Award for the outstanding male senior athlete of the year. Homecoming activities were dampened by untimely rains. but 'Magical Musical Memories' kept the rhythm flowing in crown- ing ceremonies and a big 'Lopes vic- tory. The Junior-Senior Banquet provided amiable fellowship among those graduating from Grand Can- yon and those soon to follow in their footsteps. Enthusiasm and teamwork forged the Juniors ahead. capturing the title of 'Most Spirited Class I979-I980.' The Junior Class, looking forward to greater achievements in our final stepping stone of higher education. OACH DF THE YE R l979 Coach Dave Brazell came to Grand Canyon 29 years ago and started the baseball program in l953. Grand Canyon College became elgible for post season play in l968. Since that time the Ante- lopes have qualified for post season play every year. During that time the 'Lopes have won 596 games and lost I95 for a .753 winning percentage. BrazeIl's teams have won the District Tournament seven times. the Area Tournament four times and several times have participated in the National Tournament. Dr. Brazell has compiled an overall 665-347 win-loss re- cord and in I974. the NAIA inducted him into the NAIA baseball coaches Hall of Fame. Last year. after leading the Antelopes to a 58-IO season. Coach Dave Brazell was named NAIA Baseball Coach of the Year. Playing a mini- schedule in the fall to qualify for the Region Vll Tournament, the Lady 'Lopes had a 7-2 win over Mesa College of Colorado and a narrow 5-4 defeat to a strong NAU team. With an abbreviated team of only 3 players, all freshmen, the women finished seventh out of I2 schools at the Regionals. The girls were most impressive in their debut in the AIAW. The spring season began February 7 against Glendale Community College and progressed from there to include 26 D tough matches. Trips to Tucson. The club was started in an effort to get more women's sports on the Grand Canyon College Campus. This year these women played in the Fiesta Bowl tournament at A.S.U. where they came in fourth place. They competed in the Phoenix Volleyball League during the fall. Mrs. Linda Rodl is the coach. Next year the team will be playing schools such as A.S.U.. Glendale Community College. Perfor- mances include such things as chapel, Oratorio Soci- ety work, churches, Christmas shows and various other church and community meetings. A highlight of each year is the spring semester tour. This, choir tour goes to various churches, high schools and civic meetings both in and out of the state. ln' the past Choralaires has traveled to such places' as Europe and Hawaii. This choir is directed by Dr. Macon Delevan. Jubilation is a small singing ensemble. They perform many times at a moments notice for churches and other meetings. Ju- bilation is a major publicity arm of the college. spreading the name of Grand Canyon across the valley. Members of .Iubilation view the time spent as a ministry to Christ with public relations as second. The original team of five competitiors has grown to a total of fourteen. They have competed in five American Forensic Association Tournaments in Arizona and California. In these tournaments they were opposite colleges and universities of the Pacific and South- west regions, such as the University of California at Los Angeles. University of Southern California, and the Air Force Academy. Individual speakers have brought numerous su- perior and excellent ratings home. Alan Osborn won First Place in oral interpretation at the BIOLA tournament. Mary Hambrick brought home a Third Place in poetry from BIOLA and a Third Place in pentathalon at the Cactus Classic at Central Ari- zona College. The Singer, a poetic narrative about the ministry of Jesus. was the highlingt of the year because it was a group effort. Their performance of the piece at the 29th Annual Desert Invitational defeated all other competition in the preliminary rounds. Mrs. Leola Brown. Registrar. retired at the end of the academic year. Mrs. Brown has been employed by the college since I952 when she served as Assistant Registrar. Before that time she had taught in a small school district in Guthrie. Oklahoma. During I955-59 she served as dorm mother for the men's dorm in addition to her duties as Assistant Registrar and worked on college courses in night school receiving her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Eduation in l968. Mrs. Brown received the Alumnus of the Year Award in I97O, Mrs. Brown's kindness. consideration and many talents will be missed for years to come.
