Men and women have given up praise, opportun- ities for better-paying positions, luxuries for their homes, the eight-hour working day, time to spend with Their families, and even their health. They have shown patience, faith, and an abundance of love. There is one man of whom all this can be said. We have seen him, on the verge of breaking under the strain of his responsibil- ities, smiling because of his love for God and this school. His hardest work is that which is never mentioned outside his office. We recall how he has said to the chapel audience, Sing that stanza again-I love to hear you sing . We couldn't forget his loyalty to Texas, the land of milk and honey , and surely we can never forget his contagious laugh. Scores of students will always be grate- ful to him for the guidance and counseling he has offered, so frequently concluded with, lf there is anything l can do to help, be sure to let me know . Because we love you, we The T958 Canyon Trails staff, are proud to dedicate this book to you, clean glenn eason -af ,- 12- s , 'I Y . A. 'Q ' lu ' w ' ' 1 1 fp. An Alma Mater was adopted, some mighty dusty roads were oiled, and May Day was held tor the first time. The Council will long leave a print on this school for the fine work it did. The happiness of your life depends on the qual- ity of your thoughts. ' -Antonius My God and l The White Orchid Turquoise and White Miss Marie Mclntosh, Sponsor A beautiful and maiestic symphony - that can be descriptive of our four years here at Grand Canyon College, marked by the usual four movements. We came in 1954 with our hearts full of hope and anticipation of the coming years. Gary Ramer and Bob Petitt led us through an exciting and successful year with many class members already making brilliant contributions to G.C.C. life. Several of our pretty girls took honors in Campus Royalty. Our second movement was marked with notes of happiness. Bob Petitt, class conductor this year led us in many activities, and again many of our class were outstanding in areas of scholastics, athletics, and religion. Grover Garrett conducted the third movement, full of activity for everyone. The outstanding event of this year was planning for the Junior-Senior Banquet, which was held in Mesa. Lew Sorenson, one of the star basketball players, was appropriately elected G,C.C.'s Homecoming King. This, the final movement to our symphony, has passed quick- ly, Charles Oliver took over the conductor's stand, replacing Ross Woodruff who directed us the first semester. Five members of our class were elected to Who's Who in American Univer- sities and Colleges. We also took pride this year in presenting the play Papa ls All. Thanks to our sponsors, class officers, and all the class members, we may look back with fond mem- ories of our experiences here - taking with us a part of G.C.C. spirit, never to be forgotten. The Class of '59 returned to the campus feeling that our iunior year would be a most eventful one. Our first project was the Harvest Festival which, despite the flu bug, was a rousing success. The All-school Box Social was another well-attended event. Also the class members invaded the campus and various churches selling greeting cards, which was a year-long proiect. The crowning event of the year was the Junior-Senior Banquet which was beautifully staged at Tang's Rice Bowl. Junior class members were prominent in every phase of college life. Peter McLeod was president of our B.S.U. as well as being State B.S.U. president. Doug Baker, Chuck Bisbee, and T. C. Dean sparked our basketball' team to many victories. Many iuniors were elected to serve as campus royalty, and others were hon- ored for their scholastic achievements. Thanks to the leadership oi our sponsors, Mrs. Elizabeth Clawson and Mr. Woodrow Berryhill, and our class officers, this year lived up to our highest expectations! . 41 . .1 I 'i DOUGLAS BAKER Chandler, Arizona LOUIS BELCHER Phoenix, Arizona FRITZ BELZ Ajo, Arizona CHESTER BARRY Glendale, Arizona l l li 42 JANET ALLEN Phoenix, Arizona NEVIN ALWINE Hanover, Pennsylvania i1+-f-+- - -Y f- .i -, 1 -. 1 . The summer months made a few changes in our class, and we lost some of our classmates to new jobs, to the armed forces, and to the new role of housekeeping. But still, we began the year in full spirit, and every sophomore remembers the fun we had initiating the freshmen. Now, the sec- ond Harvest Festival is past for us, and we can boast another queen, Sharon Van't Kerkhoff. Peggy Ramer represented us as a cheerleader, and two of our classmates, Johnny Crain and Eddie Shipp boosted the Antelope basketball team. Mickey Jackson, another member of our class was treasurer of the Student Association this year. Our second successful hayride is also behind us, along with Derbie Days and all those exciting ball games. Much of the credit for our happy year goes to our fine sponsors, Miss Jean Hinkle and Mr. Robert Sutherland. We have two more years left at GCC before our distinguished class graduates, and perhaps these years will be brighter and better, if possible, than any we have ever spent. 49 RICHARD BAYNE Dodge Cnty Kansas 'L .vm I new - IL-.f': K-xili' A:- . ml -in , , . Upperclassmen and faculty saw to it that the greenies were thoroughly welcomed to both the academic and social sides of college life. After a hectic, hil- arious initiation, the newcomers, finally full-fledged Antelopes, were feeling right at home on the GCC campus. The 1958 Freshmen have been active in every phase of campus activities. Well-remembered are the Harvest Festival king and queen candidates, Jim Kinny and Janette Davis the class skit that took second place at the annual Christmas Party and the hayride everyone enioyed so much The frosh have been well represented too in the fields of sports, music, drama, and beauty. Under the leadership of Dick Seaton their performances were always great. They kept the school spirit up despite the many delays in the completion of our gym. When our first home game was finally played in our new gym they cheered our stampeding Antelopes to a great victory. During the rest of the season they cheered the team to many more victories. They gave to the student body a great trophy for their season's work. That was true school spirit. 128 ,,,..x. , 1 '-J r ' ,L ,sp .1 ,nn Y, QQ 1 ' N- Y, -1 . 1 1-53f G'f!6 1 N . ,. , Q. ,J , 3 . Return- ing home we played Luke and Williams Air Force Base. We won both with Bob Deines scoring 27 points in the Luke game. We hit the low point of the season in losing to the University of San Diego. Then we ran up a string of 7 straight victories with wins over P.C., California Baptist-Covina, Palo Verde, Williams, St. Joseph's, and Luke. The P.C. and Cal Baptist wins were sparked by T. C. Dean who got 31 points in the first and 33 in the second. The win streak was finally broken by another defeat at the hands of the University of San Diego, but not until the Antelopes had forced them into an over- time. Deines bucketed 30 points in that one. Then we took a couple of easy ones from the University of California-Riverside, and California Baptist College. The best game of the year was the LaVerne game which we lost 71-75. Baker, who always plays great ball against LaVerne, scored 23 points, T8 coming in the second half. We finished the season with a thrilling win over P.C. that gave us a 15-5 season record which was the best in the state for small colleges. The Antelopes will begin the next basketball season with a 7-l winning record in our new gym. 131 Bob Deines Ken Thomas Howard 132 Roy Wittmer Y I Bill Hegler Gary Mattson Brent Offerman .lim Rock 133 Doug Baker M x6 Eddie Shlpp T. Bill and Doug are veterans of last years campaign, while Dave and Gary were stars in high school last year. Howard Dean starts his fourth year behind the plate for old G.C.C. Grand Canyon College Phoenix, Arizona With unrelenting crescendo, the year i957-58 comes hastily to its finaleL The T958 Canyon Trails staff hopes you have enjoyed this sentimental journey as much as we've enjoyed planning it. Thanks go to Arizona Yearbook Company for their patience and long- suffering, as well as an excellent job of printing our annual. Mr. Ernest Ross, of Berluti Studios helped in so many ways by taking the class and feature pictures and getting them out on a tight schedule. We appreciate Don Stegner, a former GCC student, who is now with Custom Silk Screen, for silk-screening our covers and divider pages. Special thanks go to Fred Cowardin, who sacrificed greatly to see that we had pictures in this book. Without Johnny Crain we couldn't have paid for our annual. And this editor will forever be grateful to Sharon Van't Kerkoff, Sharon Boyes, Juanita Baker, Ralph English, and Martha Jane Squire for staying up until the wee hours to see that their sections were completed. Most of all, orchids go to Mr. Gordon Psalmonds and Mr. Burton Gavitt for their ever-ready willingness to help and the hours of hand-wringing they were forced to endure. As we complete this year of college, looking back with fond memories and looking forward with new hope and anticipation, may we say with the song-writer, Elizabeth Evelyn Moore: Let all my life be music! Ah! Let the heart of me Be as a harp where joy and pain Are blended harmony. Strike! Strike! the harp that is my soul! Though pain or joy it bring, My only sorrow to be dumb, My only joy to sing! And when the Great Musician plays ln notes of joy or pain, Then let my heart respond and sing, Though in a minor strain. A wondrous song! A living song! A rapt'rous song, oh send! And on a thrilling major chord There let life end! ive Gayle McAllister, Editor 1958 Canyon Trails 170 I 1 'z I W ?7? f' f' 'f 1-, .. I ,I .II -III I t I',.II N 1. f.I 1 I: . I , - -..
