It may be the pictures on the walls, a vase or bust, a stair case, or even the floor itself. These, however, are physical things. One cannot always observe the intangibles that makes a building so dear and personal to those within it. Grand Blanc High School is important to us because ol' the many footsteps we have taken here: the many footsteps between classes, through the gym, down the halls, in and out of doors. Visible imprints ol our progress can be seen on the stairs. These steps are important to us. YVe have made an impression here, and we have been impressed. Follow our path through these pages and you will see . . . 0I'el,U0l' Dear Mr. Hoppert, XVe, the Class ol' l958, are very happy to dedicate our Echo to you. There shall certainly be no more vivid memory ringing in our alumnus ears than the sound ol' your voice cheering us on. egging us on, and occasionally ordering us on. You made our senior year lun. You laughed, you criticized, you helped. You joined in activ- ities as il you were one of us. Thank you, Mr. Hoppert. In ninth hour homeroom, you were the centurion with the sword. But we knew all along the sword wasn't really sharp. Your patience has been admirable. You per- sisted in pulling us out of trouble no matter how hard we fought to stay in it. Many of our decisions for the future we owe to you. Thank you, Mr. Nloorhead. For the soul is dead that slumbers, And things are not what they seem. Life is real! Life is earnest! And the grave is not its goal, Dust thou art, to dust returnest, Was not spoken of the soul. Not enjoyment, and not sorrow, Is our destined end or way, But to act, that each to-morrow Find us farther than to-day. Art is long, and Time is fleeting, And our hearts, though stout a.nd brave Still, like muffled drums, are beating Funeral marches to the grave. In the world's broad field of battle, In the bivouac of Life, Be not like dumb, driven cattle! Be a hero in the strife! Trust no Future, howe'er pleasant! Let the dead Past bury its dead! Act,-act in the living Present! Heart within, and God o'erhead! Lives of great men all remind us We can make our lives sublime, And, departing, leave behind us Footprints on the sands of time, Footprints, that perhaps another, Sailing o'er life's solemn main, A forlorn and shipwrecked brother, Seeing, shall take heart again. Let us, then, be up and doing, With a heart for any fate, Still achieving, still pursuing, Learn to labor and to wait. As interest increased in track, the prospects for the coming season look very good for Grand Blanc. Two outstanding players of the track team were Bob Suci and Dan Branda. Dan holds two county records in the hurdles and high jump. He was never defeated in hurdle competition except at state level this year. Bob Suci broke the school broad jump record and tied the county record. Both Suci and Branda placed fourth in their respective events at the state meet. Other outstanding men were Don Mraz and jon Mangus in the 440. Although the team was very well-balanced, a 1'ew of the boys were honored by post-season awards. Tom Guzak, Bob Burek, and jim Robinson were placed on the hrst team A11-County unit, while Bob Suci, and Dale Hittle copped second team berths. The only league loss was inflicted by Clio 3-0. Three games were decided by the margin of one run, Grand Blanc winning them all, Flushing 8-7, Beecher 1-0, and Mt. Morris 3-2. The championship was decided on the next to the last game of the season when Grand Blanc defeated Davison by the score of 3-1. A lack of height, which is much needed in basketball, was overcome by hustle, determina- tion, and a fine attitude among the players. Robinson jumps center to start Championship game. The Bobcats started the season oil by down- ing Class A Owosso, 68 to 67. Following this. win things looked dismal as the Bobcats lost tc Bendle by two points and played poorly in the Dye Holiday Tournament. The following loss to Flint Tech was a heart-breaking one-pointer. but the team started to show hustle, spirit, and teamwork. Grand Blanc then started league play. Two wins gave the team a good start, but Mandeville stopped the Bobcats cold. The de- termined Bobcats then swept the seven remain- ing games to win the county title, These wins included victories over defending champ Kearsley and avenging an early season loss to Bendle. Grand Blanc then won two close tournament games to become District Champs for the second year in succession. A close regional contest with Cass City ended the Bobcat's season. Coach Pitock attributes the Championship to the fine leadership and rebounding of Capt. Jim Robinsong the great scoring of Bob Sucig the improved scoring of Dale McClellandg good ball handling of Bill Gratsch. Tom Guzak, Pat Mc- Grath, Alon Klangus, Dave Throop, and Dick lllinter all had their moments of stardom. Jerry Cantwell, Bruce Kitchen, Dennis Delisle, Carl Bekolske and Don Jones were pushing the Hrst stringers for their positions.
