DEDICATIU 5, ,,,......-e. Ai 'F 1 ' -fs L The 1975 Granby Comet is dedicated with sincere gratitude and warmth to Miss Blake, our Assistant Principal in charge of Instruction. To the thousands of students and hundreds of teachers that have walkedthe halls of Granby High since 1939, the mere thought ofGranby High without Miss Blake is hard to imagine. She is as much a part of the Granby tradition and heritage as the cupola or the comet . A native of Norfolk, Miss Blake was educated in its public schools. After graduation from Maury High, she went to Sweet Briar College in Sweet Briar, Virginia. Her first teaching assignment was at Blair Junior High where she taught ninth grade social studies. In 1939, Miss Blake went toColumbia University, School of Philosophy, to begin work on a Master's degree. Nineteen hundred and thirty-nine was Granby's first year, andat mid-term Miss Blake was sent here to teach English, U.S. History and Physical Geography. Besides her teaching duties, Miss Blake served as head counselor when the first guidance program was initiated at Granby in 1943. Miss Blake became Assistant Principal in charge of Instruction in the ,early 1960's. She spends much time in classrooms observing techniques, and evaluating the work of lessons. Miss Blake had a Mellon Fellowship at the University of Virginia the summer of 1964. She is a past president of the Norfolk Principals Organiiation, of the Hampton Roads Personnel and Guidance Association and recently of the Norfolk Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, an organization to recognize outstanding women educators. Miss Blake has formulated many important ideas on the subjects of education and teaching in her distinguished teaching career. She still regards the classroom teacher as the most important person in the system in establishing the strength of a school, its worth to the individual and the schoolfs public image, good or bad. She regards teaching as the foremost business of the schools and she is direct and incisive in her appraisal of a lesson. The pupil, according to Miss Blake, is the most important person who ever enters a school, but a master teacher is an invaluable influence upon youth. She feels that good teaching takes careful preparation, because structure and order are essential to a disciplined mind. To Miss Blake, education is the escalator for a greater tomorrow, constantly challenging, and always affording exciting changes for the service and betterment of mankind. For her many years of faithful loyalty, warm friendship and professional instruction, the 1975 Granby Comet staff is pleased to dedicate its 35th edition to Miss Ellen Blake, Granby I-Iigh's friend.
