Administration is a large word and covers a large area of operations. The administra- tion section of the COMET attempts to show the various people who make the school system, and more particularly Granby High School, function. The most important people are the school board and the superintendent, plus his as- sistants. These are the people who are re- sponsible for the total school system and its efficient operation. In normal years, the operation of a school system is a not too difficult task. The school board decides the broad policy, with suggestions from the superintendent. Then it becomes the duty of the superintendent to carry out this policy as smoothly as pos- sible. Nineteen fifty-eight-fifty-nine was not a normal year. The problems brought on by the federal court decision that Norfolk must integrate its public schools placed an ex- tremely large load on the shoulders of the board and the superintendent. To add to the problems, the community was divided as to the policy the schools should follow. libs! L According to state law, the governor closed the schools that were to be integrated. After the governor's action, another section of the administration, the teachers, came to the foreground. Teachers provided the instruc- tional staff for the private tutoring groups that sprang up to temporarily replace the closed public schools. Meanwhile the administrative s taff of Granby was coping with the new problems produced by the school not being open. One large problem was the matter of the flood of transcripts that had to be furnished other schools.- The one part of the administrative force of Granby that is often overlooked, the service and maintenance force, got a chance during the school closure to bring the building to a top 'state of cleanliness and repair. When the schools were finally reopened, a spick and span Granby greeted the returning stu- dents. Often unseen, but always important, the administration of Norfolk and of Granby High keeps our school functioning as smoothly as possible. L A 4,.,gJ5'-if ,,
