SCHWEITZER Service to the community is the goal of any school board. In normal times they are guided in many of their actions by the sug- gestions of the superintendent. In normal times this is as it should be, because the superintendent is closer to the functioning of the school system. Time of crisis requires the school board to demonstrate strong leadership of the school system, and strong support of the school superintendent. This school year has been a year of crisis. Among any group there must be a leader. In normal times the leader is a moderator for the group. In time of crisis the leader must be the spokesman for the group. At any time J wi . 1 the leader must have the acceptance and support of the group. In this year of crisis the school board has been outspoken for public schools: segre- gated schools if possible, integrated schools if necessary, but for public schools. And speak- ing most often for the school board has been its chairman. In recognition of his belief in and unswerving support of public schools, the staff of the 1959 COMET dedicates this edi- tion of our yearbook to Mr. Paul T. Schweit- zer, chairman of the Norfolk City School Board. In dedicating this book to Mr. Schweitzer, we are also honoring all the members of our school board. sit af 1 n I I W Q , 5.-'fm ,W l' -K nv. In addition to forming tutor- ing groups, some parents filed suit in federal court to have schools reopened, even on an integrated basis. Christmas passed and the time for the beginning of the spring term came near. Early in January the federal court ruled that the school closure was illegal. Granby was to open again. :I Q95 i NIL IN MEMURIUM H2 mm Mrs Llnnle C Brlckhouse H905 19581 Granby regrets the loss of one of 1tS faculty Mrs Buckhouse served Glanbv flom 1900 to 1908 She was a member of the SOCIHI Studles, De partment ll Administration is a large word and covers a large area of operations. The administra- tion section of the COMET attempts to show the various people who make the school system, and more particularly Granby High School, function. The most important people are the school board and the superintendent, plus his as- sistants. These are the people who are re- sponsible for the total school system and its efficient operation. In normal years, the operation of a school system is a not too difficult task. The school board decides the broad policy, with suggestions from the superintendent. Then it becomes the duty of the superintendent to carry out this policy as smoothly as pos- sible. Nineteen fifty-eight-fifty-nine was not a normal year. The problems brought on by the federal court decision that Norfolk must integrate its public schools placed an ex- tremely large load on the shoulders of the board and the superintendent. To add to the problems, the community was divided as to the policy the schools should follow. libs! L According to state law, the governor closed the schools that were to be integrated. After the governor's action, another section of the administration, the teachers, came to the foreground. Teachers provided the instruc- tional staff for the private tutoring groups that sprang up to temporarily replace the closed public schools. Meanwhile the administrative s taff of Granby was coping with the new problems produced by the school not being open. One large problem was the matter of the flood of transcripts that had to be furnished other schools.- The one part of the administrative force of Granby that is often overlooked, the service and maintenance force, got a chance during the school closure to bring the building to a top 'state of cleanliness and repair. When the schools were finally reopened, a spick and span Granby greeted the returning stu- dents. Often unseen, but always important, the administration of Norfolk and of Granby High keeps our school functioning as smoothly as possible. L A 4,.,gJ5'-if ,, i ? 'f1wsgQ -1 JS 73 WMWM W-1 . STUDENT ASSISTANT S Though the administration and staff at Granby work to keep the school running at all times, their work would be much harder than it is if it were not for the volunteer work done by the Student Assistants. From the moment we enter school the Book- room Assistants are at work selling us books so that we may begin our studies. The Clinic Assistants are always on duty so that at any time during the school day when a person feels sick, he or she may go to the Clinic for assistance. Whenever there is a book needed for a re- port or some information needed for a re- search paper the Library Assistants are there to help. These people help keep the library in order and also keep the books in shape by mending and repairing any that are damaged. The Office Assistants do a huge amount of work in the main school office where the rec- ords are kept. In addition they collect all the absentee cards and distribute the lists to the teachers. They are on call at all times to deliver and sort mail, run errands for the teachers, and deliver information that is helpful to all students. Thus you see that Student Assistants affect all parts of our school life and add immeas- ureable to it BOOKROOM ASSISTAN TS Robert Ixelles Iohn Babb 'llaicus Friedman , . And for many former members, there will be no Granby class of 1959. September 1958 found the secondary schools of Norfolk closed by order of Governor Almond. This was the state's answer to the court decision that Norfolk schools must integrate at the beginning of the fall term. For the seniors there was no time to lose if they expected to graduate on schedule. Many seniors, as well as lower classmen enrolled in other schools, both in and out of the Tidewater area. Granbyites are scat- tered across the country in other school systems. Other Granby students enrolled in the pri- vate tutoring groups set up in churches in the city. Some students were able to get a full schedule of classes, other students were able to schedule classes to meet part of their requirements. The student body that remained in Norfolk followed the fortunes of their school, par- ticularly the sports activity. These students were ready and willing to return to school when and if schools opened. Finally in Jan- uary there was definite hope that schools would open for the second semester. Schools did reopen for the second semester and the class of 1959 lost no time in pre- paring for their graduation. There was a sense of urgency not present in previous years. Certain functions associated with the classes, such as the Comet Show, were casual- ties of the integrated school system. The school board had voted to eliminate all school sponsored social functions. The sponsorship of the junior and senior proms, as well as class night, was assumed by the parents of the students. These func- tions were still held at school in the usual way. Due to the school closure there are smaller classes this year, particularly noticeable in the graduating seniors. The important thing is that there is a graduating class this year, not a lost class of 1959. 12 I lfig H En 'li D '4 'Q Q. . Linda Parker and Doug Hubbell join together for a Sweet love song. Thanksgiving Day, and the traditional foot- ball game with Maury, is the only fall item in the feature section. That was the only fall feature, and at Thanksgiving there ap- peared little to be thankful for, except the victory over Maury. Schools were closed, and there seemed little prospect for their reopen- 1ng. However, the 1959 COMET does have a fea- ture section, for schools did reopen. There have been fewer feature activities for two reasons. The school board has banned school sponsored social activities, and there has been only one semester of school. Granby has sent many delegates to conven- tions, both on the district and national level. Granby boasts recipients of sports awards, including Okla John-son, who won his fourth state wrestling championship. This feat is unique in Virginia high school history. Granby also boasts recipients of scholastic awards, such as Ronnie King. who won the Bausch and Lomb award. Many of the features that have occurred this year have happened too late to be in- cluded in this year's COMET. These include the junior prom, senior prom, class night, and the most important of all, graduation. One of the customary features in this sec- tion of previous years is missing. This is the annual Comet Show. This year it was re- placed by the senior talent show. pictures of which can be found in another section. This was a casualty of integrated schools. One feature of the school year which is dif- ficult to cover is the awarding of scholar- ships to the various colleges. While we are not able to picture the recipients, we wish to offer them our congratulations, and add a well done. For this is the prime purpose of these school years, the gaining of as fine an education as possible. A yearbook is the record of a school year. To all those students pictured in this sec- tion, as well as those in other sections, the staff offers its congratulations and good wishes. 1 ,. --1-:Z-:H fy f 1 ,-NL, fl l !!1!,7 Xp, M IH! ff H 1 mkl KS-U1 mm x.,.xx..,-XA -'nr :f-if Q 5' .--'. This year the organizations played a vital part in holding the student body together during the period when the schools were closed. This was possible be- cause the Granby organizations are con- tinuously functioning bodies. The student government, elected in the spring of 1958, kept students informed dur- ing the closure. The SCA held the election for Miss Comet for the Thanksgiving Day. When the Comet teams played, the cheer- leaders were there. Some cheerleaders were attending other schools, yet their loyalty never waivered from Granby. Each game they urged their team forward toward vic- tory. Other clubs held meetings, not at school, but wherever meetings could be conveniently held. Perhaps Granby wasn't open, yet Granby was alive and functioning, at least on the organization level. Once Granby reopened, the organizations be- gan functioning at full capacity. The band gave several assembly programs for the school, and additional concerts at the elementary and junior highs in the city. They climaxed their year with their annual spring concert at school. The senior chorus was unable to give their annual Christmas program, but they gave a spring program for the school. Like the band, the chorus completed their season with their annual spring concert. Student government elections occupied the school during the month of May. As usual, the campaigns were hot and heavy, the vot- ing turnout equally heavy. Many clubs sponsored trips or sent delegates to district and national meetings. The Granby publications, the SPECTATOR and the COMET, were able to publish for at least part of the year. Support of these publications by the student body was very good. Most clubs and organizations would agree that 1959 was a good year, but a year much too short for all that could have been done. Since that time, the girls, among various worthwhile projects, have gone Christmas caroling and filled Easter baskets for a charitable pur- pose. To earn money for Brotherhood and World Service, the club sold candy and col- lected old newspapers. Under the guidance of Miss Joyce Casteen, English teacher, the girls try to reach and maintain a high standard of Christian character. The Games Tri-Hi-Y takes its name from Lemuel F. Over the twenty years of Granby's existence, the Blue Comet teams have won their share of games, and often more. But win or lose Granby takes pride in the fact that sport builds character. Nineteen fifty eight-fifty nine provided the opportunity for Granby to build a lot of character. The school closure caused many of our athletes to seek education in other schools and in other areas. Handicapped by the loss of players, more each week, the football team played in the tradition of the fabulous Comets of the forties. Lack of reserves hurt in the later quarters, but after midseason the addition of the first string from the junior varsity seemed to provide the needed difference. Granby finished out the season with a win over Maury and a winning record for the season. Basketball showed the real lack of man- power. A local paper showed our lonesome bench with only Coach Holtgrewe and one player. The rest of the squad was on the floor. The Comets still managed to place third in the Eastern District tournament. Wrestling just kept rolling along, but for the first time in local wrestling history Granby didn't win the state championship. Individual Comets did win two state titles. Indoor track competed in the state meet and two of the thinclads placed. Outdoor track saw more manpower but stronger competi- tion. Winingder, Etheridge and McDonough were the standouts of the squad. The tennis team was the strong team of all the spring sports. Theirs was a winning sea- son and ended up placing in the Eastern District tourney. The baseball season produced only five wins, all by a young ninth grade pitcher. Swimming showed the usual good form, the golf team was in and out. Like other school teams, these too showed the effects of the school closure. In summary, Granby built character this year, and also managed to win some games, many of these victories rated as upsets. .Q 'gf N is 2 ,lf 'Yi . 'I' Va. ' 'LI axes fry! The Blue Comets got away to an early start by winning their first two games. Injuries and transfers began to take their toll of man- power. The regulars played hard and well but the lack of substitutes caused the loss of many games in the late quarters. After the completion of the Junior Varsity season, the first string JV players were moved up to the varsity. The Comets roared again with three wins to finish the season winning six and losing four. The peak of the season was reached when Granby defeated Wilson, 1-0, in overtime. One new pitcher showed much promise for future yearsg Denny Overman was credited with five wins for the season. The greatest lack of the team was consistent hitting, yet in the last game of the season we scored sixteen runs, with Tom Winindger batting in nine runs on two triples and a double. gm-Hrs 'qi 'x'-!,, 31 te it ,av A0 Nunn' g2 ', 115 C as Ulf --'QW -un? I , , ' f x . .1 -, X L - '3 '1- ...D The final section of the 1959 COMET, like the final section of each of the previous COMETS in Granby's history is composed of the messages and good wishes from the busi- nesses in our community. Some of our ad- vertisers have been with the COMET since the first issue, others have joined us in the past few years, or just this year. Just as Granby has grown over the past twenty years, so has the business life of Nor- folk, and so have our advertisers. The COMET would like to think that at least a small part of the business growth may have been due to the ads in our pages. Many readers perhaps do not realize that the receipts from advertisements help to de- fray a part of the cost of publishing the COMET, and in this way hold down the sub- scription cost to the subscriber, while keep- ing the quality of the book up. With this thought in mind, the staff urges you to sup- port the merchants whose ads appear on the following pages. Granby has a very sympathetic understand- ing for the merchants and businessmen of our community, for the operation of our school is very closely linked with the busi- ness life of the community. Perhaps the most immediate link is in the taxes paid by business, much of which goes to operate the public schools. Without a prosperous business foundation, the taxes would not cover school costs. In many other ways, the schools and busi- ness have a close tie. Schools are good cus- tomers of the businesses of Norfolk. The materials to build and to operate the schools are purchased locally. Sports equipment for our teams are purchased from local sporting goods stores. Clubs and organizations are also good cus- tomers. In the publication of the COMET each year, for example, supplies and services purchased amount to several thousand dol- lars and includes printing, photographic sup- plies, paper, pencils, and the many other types of office supplies so necessary to our operation.
