A large house owned by a prominent family in Norfolk, the Hemmingways, was converted into a high school It was called the Norfolk High School and had previously been privately endowed by the Hemmingway family They sold it to the city for S25 OOO and it was immediately put into use This school is still standing today although its name has been changed from Norfolk High School to John Marshall It is now being used as an elementary school During the following year or two three or four different schools were built and the city s school system began to expand rapidly For a while these few schools were sufficient for the few people who populated the city by the sea but the progressing years brought newcomers and schools seemed to spring up everywhere One of the more prominent of the many new additions was Granby which was built in 1939 in the center of a somewhat desolate area tas compared to its large population todayl. The city with Federal help built this beautiful brick school which was then, and still is a beautiful landmark in the city of Norfolk. At the time it was a good size and proved a great benefit to Norfolk, as it served the city well. It was used as both an elementary and a high school in its first years. This took a big load off of the other schools in the city. The war broke out in Japan in 1941, a new era was brought forth, and Norfolk's population seemed to almost double itself. The increasing population thus, crowded the schools and newly built Granby was be- coming over-crowded and required annexation. By the fall of 1942 an annex was completed on the north end and included approximately eight new classrooms. This newly added annex was used as an elementary section B49 The new gym annex for a few years and proved successful Within a period of three or four years the addition was converted into a regular part of the high school '- WI 'a-.44 .Q-as The annex and Cooper s College E 'E 5 ' 1 1 an an .Ar . BREWBAKER School Board members are selected by the Norfolk City Council. They have overlapping terms so that, just as the Senate, the whole board never changes at one time. The School Board is therefore a continuous body. The board sets the policies that each school will follow and then the Superintendent carries out those policies. The Superintendent is the chief administrative agent for the board. The School Board members are actually the ones who elect teachers to their iobs. The Superintendent is backed up by members of the board and they approve all acts of the Superintendent before they are carried out. The entire board is responsible to the council because they are appointed by this body. One may become a member of the staff either by being chosen or by volunteering. Juniors are preferably chosen to work on the staff so that in Their senior year They may be well-acquainted and qualified to turn out ci good book. After o student has worked on The staff for a year, he knows what to expect and has a vague idea of what position he desires to fill his senior year. This enables the staff to be composed of more efficient students. All year there is a fr tic rush to finish drawing a dummy, complete t Nqllingxof ads, complete all copy and take pictures d 'have Them fully identified. In this clamor and confusion members of the Spectator staff strive to complete their stories before the deadline. An average day for any member of the staff may find the student roaming the halls in search of valuable information that may lead to an exciting frontepage scoop, a well-composed editorial, a humorous feature story, or ci sports review. Editors of the staff carry on a vigorous campaign to be accurate because the Spectator echos the thoughts of Granby. The members meet weekly and discuss plans for advertising various school functions. The Comet Show and dance posters are constantly dwelling in the minds of members trying to develop original ideas to add color to our school. Senior Chorus Musical programs given by the Granby Senior Mixed Chorus will be remembered by the students long after they have completed their education here. The many annual programs given by this group in- clude memorable concerts such as the Christmas Program, Evening of Music and the new series of ioint programs with neighboring schools called the Spring Concert. The Senior Mixed Chorus is composed of the girls and boys who have proved their abilities in the Junior Choruses or in the Senior Girls Chorus. From this select group a few carefully chosen stu- dents make up small choral groups. These small groups play an important part in the performances given by the chorus. Among the small groups mentioned are the Madrigals. The Madrigals is a group composed of both boys and girls who devote their talents to singing religious songs. Another group is the senior girls Ensemble. These few girls are chosen from many to represent the Granby High School Chorus. Their performances are numerous and have been enioyed by civic groups throughout the city. These girls sing a variety of popular songs as well as those of a more serious nature. Under the able guidance of Mrs. Eleanor Walden, the senior chorus and the small groups deriving from the senior chorus have been recog- nized as an outstanding choral group throughout the State. Many at the people in Junior Chorus have had previous experience in junior high schools, before coming to Granby. From this not wholly inexperienced group of voices, Mrs. Eleanor Walden, Choral Director, selects the capable people who sing in the Senior Mixed and Senior Girls Choruses. Unfortunately, the Junior Chorus did not put on their usual assembly program as they have done in the past few years. They did lend their voices to the Annual Spring Concert and have sung at the Christian Temple on various occasions With the excellent direction of Mrs Walden and the willing co operation of the students Granbys Junior Chorus will continue to be an entertaining and much enloyed organization Junior Chorus class having their daily practice QA B Danny Fowler George Pay Franklin Burroughs Myra Weber Nancy Harrison Celeste Wtlltarns Bety Nottingham Delle Walker ROW 2 Jaan White Linda Harr son N rrs Clements Mtke Gaspeny Clyde Tilghman Wilbur Poston John Smith Dan eq' cl t F Jan Romrn Mrs W 'den ROW Phy lts Christie Becky Wh tehurst Wal r Hoffman James S att Hugh Staples Pete Ow ns Dorothy Carpenter Phyllis Laws n tophorst Nancy Ktmsey Nancy White Karen Mulverhtll Carolyn Kennett Merctna Kell Judy Lee Carol Fr sbie Rebecca Lcfern Janet Lanlord Franc s Ch rry Ccrol Dauaherty ROW 5 Rta Adams Marna Pulling Diane Hale Connie DeVane CarolE rnest Penny Roe Rutn And s n Nancy Hogwooa P 'ned McSh rley Beverly Burroughs Cathy Gray Joyce Polk . . . , . , t g ' l l 2 t t l , ' 4 A . This year has seen the smallest group in several years. Although the band is few in number, it still has the same ine auality of music that has prevailed in the past. This is possible only by faithful practicing and sincere striving for musical perfection by each member of our band. Every person who has been to a Granby football game has seen the band proudly marching dawn the field playing a spirit-rousing song, better known to the members as Aggie, Their blue and gold uniforms and lively music add the finishing touches to a typical football season. For the past nine years, Granby has placed more people in the All-State Band than any other school in the city of Norfolk. 16 2 Y! 9. Tom Wmmdger runs a play for the team in the Granby Norview game Va rsity Football The Blue Comets fighting against strong oppo sition and weakened by the flu did not compile too impressive a record They began the season with an easy victory over Suffolk but were defeated the next week by a surprisingly strong Princess Anne team After their triumph over Oscar Smith High they were destined to lose for the next five weeks to Craddock Norview, Hampton, Newport News, and Wilson, After this series of defeats, they came back to beat Church- land High in a very close game. During the third quarter of the traditional Thanksgiving Day game, spirits were dampened as rain fell and the Maury Commodores rolled up a 33 to 18 victory. At this year's football banquet, Coach Brown said that next year's team could be state champions if it wants to be. Suffolk ........ O Princess Anne ..
